Photos and Description of the Ceret vacation house rental 3 Bedrooms 2 bathrooms sleeps 6 in historic centre of lively town

We bought our town house in old Céret because we wanted French café culture and access to mountains, sea and Spain. The street outside the house is pedestrianised and there’s a wine bar, a beautiful square with a fountain and a belting wood fire pizzeria and two other restaurants close by. Within a 5 min walk there are 8 other cafes and restaurants, a night bar, bakeries, an old church, chic little shops, a newsagent and a Netto. Barcelona is a 2hr drive; medieval Girona a 1hr drive. The nearest beach is only 30mins by car. Old Céret has narrow cobbled streets and wide boulevards lined with towering plane trees. It is an utterly charming place. The market on Saturday morning buzzes! Ground floor – dining area and fully equipped kitchen. A spiral staircase leads to the top of the house. 1st floor double bedroom and bathroom. 2nd floor double bedroom and a 3rd bedroom with bunk beds. Shower and toilet. 3rd floor is a large airy living room with French and velux windows.

Additional information about rental rates

  • When you contact us we will send you a copy of our booking form. When you email or post this back to us a 100 euro per week deposit should be sent with your reservation. The deposit will be refunded in full if you have to cancel and we can re-let the house for your rental period.

The balance will become due 8 weeks before the rental period. A Good Housekeeping Deposit of 200 euros is also required at the time of the balance. This sum is fully refundable if the property is left as found at the start of the let, laundry and light cleaning apart, and in the absence of damage.

Electricity is included in the price. In addition, for winter lets, two butane cubes are provided for the gas heater on the ground floor. If we have managed to install a wood burning stove (as we intend) there will also be some fuel for this for winter lets.

Payment by cash, cheque, bank transfer or PayPal. NB International transfers should include all bank charges please.
  • If you'd like to rent the property for a part-week or 1 or 2 extra days, we will be happy to consider this, although it may not be possible during July and August.

All linen and towels are provided although we would ask you to bring your own beach towels.
There will be enough basic provisions provided for the week ie washing up liquid, washing powder, fabric conditioner, dishwasher tablets, toilet rolls, paper towels, plastic bin liners and cleaning products for toilets and kitchen. This is our mission statement. I personally can’t stand having to buy this stuff on holiday.
Laundry is included in the price but we would appreciate it if you cleaned the house before leaving, as there is sometimes not much time change over time between bookings.

Notes: There are 47 steps up the spiral staircase to the 3rd floor living room! Here, you’ll find a small fridge for wine and beer and a baby belling cooker. We also keep glasses upstairs, but there is no sink. In hot weather we often cook simple meals and eat up there, with the 3 sets of French windows and the roof windows all open. There is a small dining table and chairs for this purpose. You can of course cook downstairs and then warm the food up later in the sejour. Alternatively, walk out through the front door, turn R and in 20 seconds you can be sitting outside in 'La Place des neuf Jets' a beautiful little square where the fountain dates back to 1473. There are no cars so the kids can run around safely, play with the fountain and make a noise, while you eat a thin bake, wood fired pizza and drink cold sangria . Alternatively there are two other restaurants in the square offering proper French food. Sit outside the wine bar with a glass of Sauvignon blanc while you decide!

Further details for this vacation house rental in Ceret, France

More about Ceret: Céret has a warm and sunny climate, but in summer it can be extremely hot. The town, however, is the perfect place to shelter from the midday heat, as it is lined with plane trees which create a cool and pleasant atmosphere. The shops, cafes and bars along with the weekly Saturday market make up the life of Céret. There are regular communal dances, where people dance in a ring known as the Sardane. The dance looks deceptively slow and easy but the intricate footwork belies this. This year the Sardane festival will be held from 17-20 July. Céret also holds an annual bull running festival known as la feria where young bulls are run through the streets corralled by a group of highly skilled horsemen and women. The 'feria' (carnival) will be held from 10-13 July 2009.The region around Céret is a major fruit producer, and in particular is famed for its cherries. Céret hosts a cherry festival each year (early May) with such oddities as cherry beer and a cherry stone spitting competition.

More about local activities: In the early 20th century a cluster of painters, sculptors and ceramicists came to live and work in the area. Matisse and Modigliani visited. Pablo Picasso lived in Céret for a time and Café Pablo in the town is dedicated to him. Chaim Soutine, the Russian emigre painter, also lived in Céret and painted many landscapes of the village and its surrounds. Eventually this resulted in the establishment of a small but delightful Museum of Modern Art. Many donated some of their works to the Museum giving it a kick-start into the realm of great little art museums of Europe. Piste skiing can found after a 2 hour car drive up the Tet valley and into the Cerdagne. There is a famous golf course at an altitude of 3500ft, near St Laurent de Cerdans and about 45mins away by car. There are spas at Amelie-les-Bains and Le Boulou (15 mins). Céret Sportive play rugby union on Sundays at an impressive local stadium (10 mins walk). And the walking opportunities are endless!

Our free starter pack: I’ll tell you what annoys me when I rent a holiday home. It’s finding 1 roll of paper per toilet, 2 dish washer tablets and 1 bin liner etc “to get the renter started”. Don’t know about you, but I don’t go on holiday to waste time shopping for such trivia. At our house you’ll find enough washing up liquid, and powder etc for the whole week. We’ll leave you to buy the food and wine! For adults there are music and film CDs, fiction books and board games including chess and scrabble. There is also a small collection of my walking guides and maps. I don’t care if you walk off with the fiction, but please respect my maps and walking guides! There is an ipod connection on the music centre so bring your own music then you won’t have to listen to our bizarre tastes. Lastly, about kids. There is a baby gate to avoid accidents on the spiral staircase, cot, highchair, changing mat, some toys and books, and a cuddly pink pig that snores and vibrates when you press it.

Other Activities: Cathar history trail, routes des vins,

Perfect House, Perfect Location, Perfect Holiday

Irish Peops Randalstown, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland
Review Submitted: August 24, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Having done the French campsites for several years we decided to change our routine and try a 'proper' house, and what a good decision it was. On arrival we were greated by Jay who was most helpful. The house was to the highest standard, everything a family could wish for and was spotless. The kitchen was very well equipped, bedrooms were spacious, the main bathroom contains a lovely shower/bath, and the sejour on the top floor was a dream. My wife lso enjoyed the large selection of books left for guests.
We had two of our children staying with us (12 & 17) and it was perfect for them also - UK satilite TV was a big plus for them and our youngest also enjoyed the stream outside the front door. 30 metres to the right from the front door brings you to the Place des neuf jets where there are 3 restuarants (we ate at the Quattrocentro most nights which had a great range of food and friendly staff. Further down the town was Pablo's Bar & Cafe de France which also had their share of live music.
The beaches in Argeles sur Mer are great and only 30 minutes away. There are lots of other activities near Argeles such as Aqua Land, Luna Park, karting etc.
All in all it was a great holiday for us and we didn't want to go home - there is no doubt that we will return here next year.
Thanks Sam and Maggi.

what a great location!

Review Submitted: August 4, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We stayed here for a week with 2 adults and 2 children (5 & 2) and the location was excellent, house was very clean & well equipped, owners were extremely helpful in ensuring we had a great time.

As with previous reviewers our kids were permanently playing in the stream running in the street outside the door (which is traffic free) or in the fountain in the square (whilst we had a sneaky glass of wine!). So from a child friendly point of view - great.

As mentioned there are a lot of stairs tho our kids are used to this so it wasn't much of a problem - but we did occasionally have the chase thrill seeking 2 year old up and down them/stop her throwing herself off them etc..., so something to keep in mind.

Also close to some nice beaches without being in tourist trap hell!

A taste of the French Catalan

kimmieUK Suffolk
Review Submitted: July 10, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Our holiday party was 3 adults and 3 children, aged 4, 2 and 10mths. France is a favourite holiday desitnation of ours and this property in Ceret did not disappoint. Centred right in the middle of 'old town' Ceret, it is decorated beautifully in keeping with the local culture. The facilities in the house are excellent, a lot of space in the bedrooms, never any queues for the bathroom (of which there are 2), use of the computer and internet (great for checking out places to explore on google map and checking the weather) and a well equipped sejour to relax in at the top of the house. The house owners made sure our stay was comfortable and were friendly and efficient.

There are alot of stairs in the property, great for burning off all the extra holiday eating, this is something to watch with very small children. Having said that my 2 eldest, 4 and 2, had no problems at all and we were there 2 weeks.

Bakeries and Boulangeries are scattered all over the town, with one 200 yards from the front door, to our delight we were able to take fresh bread and meats on our daily picnics.

The highlight for our 2 boys was playing in the fountain in the square just round the corner form the house and having boat races in the channels outside the house (all clean water, diverted mountain steam used to wash the cherry and peach harvest, called the D'arrosage I think).

The countryside is stunning, with a range of becahes a short drive away. There is ALOT to do here whether you like art and culture or a more active holiday.

The only thing to take note of is that it seemed that alot of the child activities swimming etc in the region (and I gathered across most of France) are ONLY open in the school holidays,- July and August.

Highly reccomend if you want a real taste of France.

Wunderschönes Urlaubsdomizil

Kestin Moers,NRW,Deutschland
Review Submitted: August 9, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
