Lake Michigan sunsets and crystal clear waters equals 'life on Cross Village time'. Located on Michigan's #1 scenic drive, the towns of Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Mackinaw City and Cheboygan are all within a 30-minute drive. The great room is all windows offering an unrestricted view of Lake Michigan. A spacious deck, just a few steps out the door, juts out over the beach for sunning and star-gazing.
If your idea of vacation is more active, the area offers boating, hiking the north country trails, biking, antiquing and shopping. Three Pines Gallery and the famous Legs Inn are a 1 mile walk into Cross Village. Seven miles north of Cross Village, Bliss Park has acres of climbing dunes and sandy beach.
Bringing water shoes is recommended for swimming and beach-walking because the beach and water are a mixture of sand and rounded rocks. The beach in front of the house is sandy but the amount of sandy lake bottom varies from year to year.
The deck rests on large boulders jutting out over the beach. If your children are under the age of reason, constant supervision would be required to prevent them from climbing through the railings.

Our father, Carroll Appel, built this lake house when his family was young with the help of a local Indian carpenter and stonemason. They named it Shimnikon 'place of the apples'. When the family grew, Dad built a retirement home across M-119 and up the bluff which the family now uses. We rent the lake house to help preserve our family tradition for yet another generation.
Julie Appel-Hill purchased this cottage in 1963
Cross Village and the changing moods of Lake Michigan provide a getaway that restores perspective to our hectic lives.
The beaches along this stretch of Lake Michigan are sparsely populated. You can walk the waterline for miles and encounter few souls. Wildlife is abundant.
My wife and I had a very peaceful and relaxing week here. The lake view was great and the surrounding setting was wonderful. Its location in relation to Cross Village a great - we walked easily to Leggs for lunch.
I rented this property for one week to get away from a hectic job and busy life. The cabin is ideally situated with fantastic views both from inside and the expansive deck. I think I took 60 sunset photos! You hear the waves even from the back bedrooms. Beds are comfortable, great cross ventilation even on warm days, kitchen is fully equipped - I cooked every day. (I did get carryout from Leggs Inn twice, though.) Bring your own DVDs and reading material in case of rain. This is a typical Up North cabin - no frills, but totally comfortable. And the beach is fantastic! My dog had never been to a beach before and went nuts. The property manager is thoughtful, responsive, and unobtrusive - nearby if you need anything. I would stay here again. Note: Since this is on the Tunnel of Trees, be prepared for some motorcycle noise during the day. But by dusk, things quiet down.
Hello! Want to let everyone know that this is a very special little place that was everything they said it would be and everything we wanted! It was perfect for a get-a-way with my boyfriend. The fireplace (and all the wood cut and ready! Lifesaver!!) was killer as was the view and setting. This place is easy to find and is right on the Tunnel of Trees drive - gorgeous! We even got up super early one morning and sat out on the deck and looked at about a trillion stars (Chicago city folk here...we don't see many!) They are correct when they say there is really no cell reception there but...we loved that! As such, it was an incredibly relaxing, romantic and restful break...we hope to return someday!! Thanks again Appel-Hill family for sharing your place with us!
The sound of the surf, jet black skies with billions of stars, million dollar sunsets. The lake house is an unbelievable get away. Leave your electronics at home, no phone, no internet, no tv. Beautiful family cottage on a sandy and rocky New England feeling beach. A place to stop and pause. Gigantic windows open to Lake Michigan with (4) light houses visible on clear days. The open floor plan allowed us to all hang out together. A beautiful stone fireplace sits in the center of the living space. We were dying to try it out but the weather was just too nice to use it. The house sits a few steps up from the sidewalk and everything on one level makes it very nice for people who have trouble with level changes. The kitchen was stocked with all kinds of cooking gear and the essential cork screw. Our family ate together, talked, played games, listened to old music and enjoyed the nature surrounding the cottage. A "ten" beach is just up the road with white sand dunes and turquoise crystal clear water. The Legs Inn is almost walkable with indoor and outdoor seating, live music and great food. Within a short drive are the big towns of Petoskey, Harbor Springs or Mackinaw City. Zip lining, mountain biking, go carts and golf is only a half hour away. Recommended for laid back families and friends.
Cottage was warm and comforting, but the deck spectacular. Whether contemplating the lake from expansive windows inside the cottage or from the deck, it would be easy to imagine you're on the bow of a boat. Kitchen complete. Location ideally located for day trips to Cheboygan, Mackinaw, Harbor Springs and Petoskey but we found we lost motivation to leave the peace and quiet. Beach shoes required for walking. Attentive owner checked in with us soon after arrival to welcome and assure all was well. When can I book for next year?
Having rented prior throughout MI and the east coast, this was one of the nicest settings ever. The windows overlooking the lake; the waves and the wind ... no better scenery for breakfast or dinner! Owner was always helpful and responsive. Long walks on the beach, visitng the sights along the Tunnel of Trees, or just relaxing with a book on the deck ... this simple cottage is great. With a DVD player, movies can be watched; didn't miss the TV at all. Visited Harbor Springs one day and the famous Legs Inn another, (within a brisk walking distance), this cottage had a bit for all who want to get away from the hectic pace of the world!
