A charming 3 bedroom house with typical Caribbean character on a private beachfront estate. Enjoy the magic of the Caribbean all within the privacy of this 2.5 acre private property with it's own rainforest jungle, forest trails and beach access.
The house is an older refurbished 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms Caribbean home on raised stilts with an open American style bar /kitchen and several spacious porches and terraces for enjoying the surrounding environment after a day at the beach.
Expect regular visits from the local monkeys, sloths and numerous birds. Discover the vibrant fish and coral reefs in front of the property and bring home your own lobster!
Welcome to Bilbo, an Historic Caribbean House where the Forest meets the Sea …
Two thirds of Bilbo is « jungle » forest where you may have the opportunity of observing congos (Howler monkeys), sloths, eagles, iguanas, sugar bats, armadillos and many wild animals and birds.
Frequently, Sargents will nest on the Hamaca Terrace. In 2014 it was on the Principal Terrace.
Bilbo was built in 1985, which in caribbean numbers makes it an « Old House », especially when you consider that most of the construction material was brought in from the Sea… as there was no rad back then.
Until 2002 Bilbo was the Winter Home of the environmentalist Mr. Maurice Strong. More information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurice_Strong
His biographer says, Maurice arrived barefooted in 1948 in Winnipeg at age 19, and 30 years after, in 1978, was nominated Chairman of PetroCanada… which seems quite a success !!!
In 1972, Maurice Strong organized the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment, what became the First U.N. Earth Summit. He was appointed as Secretary General of the Earth Summit for 1992, and is largely credited for bringing about what is today well known as the Kyoto Agreement.
In 1997 Maurice Strong was given the role of senior advisor to U.N. ‘s Secretary General Kofi Annam.
Various Costa Rican’s Presidents and VIP’s came to Bilbo to celebrate New Year’s Eve with Mr Strong at his house in the late 80’s. and early 90’s.
Since 2002, I have tried to maintain Bilbo in it’s original stature and simplicity, as a place to relax, enjoy nature and wilderness by the sea. Bilbo is not a fancy house, it is still somewhat rustic in nature, but clean and comfortable. The setting, however, is spectacular.
Have an early swim and surprise a giant turtle eating seaweeds from the coral reef… just 50 yards … from your bed !
You may be woken up by Howler monkeys, admire hummingbirds and many others during early morning breakfast on the terrace. Thereafter, look for sloths in the Guarumo trees, or have a walk though the jungle and admire the huge Ceibo Tree… at the end of the trail.
Milton, my gardner, will be so happy to show you his fascinating Forest…
Anita is at your service to help you with the cleaning and washing/drying of clothes and to clean the house for an enjoyable stay.
Have a wonderful stay at Bilbo and enjoy life y Pura Vida
PS : Bilbo is a non-smoking environment. Please do not smoke in bedrooms. Please be careful with fire. Bilbo is all wood.
Lovely character home, great location, resident sloth. The porches were comfortable and breezy, no ac, no problem as the nights were quite comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The Bilbo Estate is just a few steps away from our property management office and caretakers, so any questions or extra care that you might need is also nearby!
Playa Chiquita, 7 Km southern Puerto Viejo, as its name indicates, is a succession of small, white sandy beaches, certain of which are protected by a reef. It's a very friendly/family neighborhood with restaurants, grocery store (where you can find international products), ice cream shop, within walking distance.
