  • One of the high points of this beautiful cottage is the stunning 'waterbabies' Roman bath - see the picture, which can be a step-down-into shower for adults or, when the plug is put in, a small swimming pool for children. Aqua colour mosaic tiles line the bath/shower and the 'swimming pool' is surrounded by hand painted tiles following the illustrations from Charles Kingsley's THE WATER BABIES. As there are three toilets (two separate from bathrooms) there is no queuing for facilities. All the /WCs other than Waterbabies, have a 'cottage' feel - one, for example, with hand-painted Deft tiles. All the taps and showers, the toilet seats and other fittings, are of high quality.

  • Each bedroom has its own charming style - and there are wonderful views from all of them: at the back over the valley towards Farnborough; at the front looking directly into the woods,where deer graze. Each room has a subtle colour-theme; the bedding, pillow and mattresses are first class quality; there is a charming wicker chair in each room, and plenty of hanging/drawer space. Rugs grace the polished wooden floorboards; bedside lamps cast a cosy glow. Hairdryers are provided in two of the bedrooms, and bedside lamps in all of them. The furniture is of high quality (lovely chests of drawers and charming bedside tables).

Notes: Although Woodpecker Cottage is not suitable for those confined to wheelchairs, we have grab-rails on the stairs and in the Waterbabies shower - and our 90 year old mother (and other people's elderly mothers and fathers) have enjoyed happy days at the cottage: if you can manage one flight of stairs you'll be OK; and there are WCs on each floor. It is possible to turn the downstairs study into a bedroom by bringing down one of the folding single beds from upstairs. The downstairs Cloakroom is on the same level as the study, and very close to it. The garden is fully enclosed, and so is wonderful for small children (there are places to hide in the bushes), and we provide toys and a folding sandpit and paddling pool, which are great in the summer. In the autumn you can pick raspberries at the bottom of the garden! The garden is very well kept and we are proud of our summer borders. Birds abound. We feed them, and so do most of our guests. You will see woodpeckers . . .

Really delighted with Woodpecker cottage - really super and just what we need - lovely and light and with good open living areas and very well equipped. As I write this, I can hear the children giggling in the garden – discovering all its secret delights.

Excellent facilities, wonderful location. Highlight of the week was the garden party and reunion we gave at this great cottage with all our British relatives. Saw lots of wildlife including an adder in the Lane outside! In summary: fantastic week.

The cottage is comfortable and the organisation of everything in it is outstanding. The garden and the views are delightful. We much enjoyed the varied bird life and the friendly visiting cat. The weather wasn't fine but the holiday was.
