10 acre garden and exceptional views

Bocca d'Oro is situated in the foothills of Monte Argentario, a mountain promontory with long sandy beaches and a rocky coastline in southern Tuscany. Most years you can swim right up to the end of October. Apart from providing a wonderful variety of seaside activities, it is well-placed for visits to Siena and Florence, or, nearer at hand, the Etruscan tombs of Tarquinia. The house itself has fine views of the sea and the mountain and, with 10 acres of land, it is a completely private place and yet only five minutes from the sea and the unspoilt village of Porto Ercole with its pretty harbour, restaurants, bars and cafes. Sleeping up to 14 people, it is suitable both for families or smaller groups (when the rent is reduced but all 8 bedrooms are still available). There is plenty of space both inside and on the wide expanse of the terrace surrounding it. The hillside garden is planted with cypress, pine and olive trees, and in a sheltered spot among these is the swimming pool.

One of the features of the house is the large terrace which surrounds it and is planted with olive, pine and lime trees. Here you can eat out either under a pergola of vines or at another table which looks out towards the sea. There are outside lights for the evenings both on the terrace and the swimming pool. Also a ping-pong table, badminton court and a barbecue.

Only five minutes drive from the house is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the Tuscan coast where you can swim in most years right up to the end of October. Extending from the Argentario in a 6 kilometre crescent to the mainland, it has all the beach facilities including bars, restaurants, wind-surfing, water and jet skiing. Behind the beach is a magnificent pine forest with deer and other wildlife. Bicycles can be hired to ride through the forest and one can stop at various places along the way to swim - see photographs.

Porto Ercole (our local village) five minutes drive, Orbetello (the nearest station) 15 minutes. Further afield but all within reach of the Argentario lie the main Tuscan towns: Siena, where the historical Palio race is held (1.5 hours), Florence and Orvieto (2 hours) and Tarquinia, home of the Etruscan tombs (45 minutes). Porto Ercole is dominated by two 16th century Spanish forts and has a wide variety of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. On the other side of the mountain is the village of Porto San Stefano, from where ferries sail daily to the local islands of Giglio and Giannutri. There are several tennis courts in the area and a championship golf course 10 minutes from the house. Further away, an hour's drive, are the sulphur springs of Saturnia. And nearer at hand the lagoons around Orbetello where you can go boating.

Notes: The kitchen has plenty of room and includes: two fridges with deep freeze compartments, large oven, two hobs, a dishwasher and lots of cupboard and shelf room. Utility Room: Washing machine/ironing board, double sink for hand-washed items. The large L-shaped living room leads directly on to the terrace and includes a dining area at one end. There is a TV and video recorder with over 200 films, including some cartoons for children, as well as an upright piano and a library of English books. Towels and linen included and is changed once a week by the cleaner who comes to the house 4 days a week. A cook, at extra cost, can be arranged on request.

GREAT FAMILY HOLIDAY

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely house in Porto Ercole. We were three families and it housed us all perfectly. The villa is a wonderfully relaxing place and has lots of different seating areas and space for adults and kids to holiday happily together. The badminton court was a big success.

We hired a cook for our evening meals. She was recommended by the owner and produced the most delicious food for us and the children every evening. She doesn't speak any English but we did somehow manage to communicate.

The surrounding area was wonderful with lots to do. We loved the beach and exploring the islands as well as early evening drinks in the port. Lots of good restaurants in the area which were great with the children.

Enchanted April - A book group trip to Italy

There were 9 of us in the group and we had a holiday that exceeded all our expectations. We had plenty of room - it was easy to be together or alone - whatever we wished. We loved the beautiful terrace in the early morning to enjoy the spectacular view. We loved the terrace at other times of the day too!!. The gardens were beautifully kept and were laden with pots of flowers, vines and stunning trees.
As a book group we also enjoyed the fact that there were books in every room of the house - and they were themed by genre! A book lovers dream!
Our stay was way too short and we have all come away wanting more - always an accolade to a good holiday. We would definately come back either as a group or as individuals with our own families.
The only comment I would make is dont have a big vehicle like we did - a 9 seater!! We managed but would have preferred to use more smaller vehicles. This is really nothing to do with the villa as it was our bad not theirs!! Ciao!

The Best of Holidays

We wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at your house. Wonderful location, great view and a very large terrace where one could sit out in the sun or shade. The house inside is full of character, comfortable and spacious. And the local beach was the best we have ever been to and only 5 minutes away. It's hard to imagine finding a better place for a holiday.

A Great Family Holiday

I am writing to let you know that we had a superb holiday at your villa in Porto Ercole. It really is a very beautiful place affording every comfort and facility. The area is extremely picturesque. We took day trips to Florence and also to Siena, both of which were fantastic.The cook did a marvellous job for us on my birthday at a reasonable cost. Many thanks for organising that and for the wine we discovered on arrival! We have some wonderful memories of a great family holiday.

Great Vacation Spot

I stayed at this home in September 2009. It is a wonderful house to base a Tuscany trip. It is close to the Mediterranean and also to such great cities as Rome, Florence and Siena. It is also close to great Etruscan villages such as Sorano and Sovana, both great spots for hiking.

The house itself has views of the sea and the surrounding countryside. The kitchen is great for cooking meals and the terrances provide wonderful places to eat the great Tuscan food. There are pots in the kitchen that can cook pasta for 20!

And let's not forget the books that are everywhere and all in English. Some are written by the original owner of the house. The house is clean and taken care of by a wonderful housekeeper. There is also a gardener who takes care of the pool.

If you don't want to cook in the great kitchen, then Porto Ercole, the nearby village, has great restaurants. And if you would like a day trip, then take the ferry to my most favorite place in all of Italy, the island of Giglio.

I would recommend this great Tuscan house to anyone.
