1930 EDISTO BEACH COTTAGE, BEACH WALK, WIFI, AC, SAT TV, VALUE

Edisto Beach Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 4 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

We are designated 'Beach Walk', third block from the beach. From the front door it takes 3-5 minutes to walk to the beach. Located on the corner of Myrtle and Holmes, the cottage is right around the corner from the free-water dispensary. Louis's Cottage is a 1930's bungalow. It originally stood in the Edisto National Park and was moved to this site in the 1950's. We have strived to save as much of the character and feel of the old place as possible. To us, this is what a beach experience should be. Enjoy the breezes on the screened in porch with swing and lazy chairs. (My kids like to sleep out there). Relax on the hammock in the afternoons while reading a book. ( This is my favorite pastime). There are two bedrooms upstairs and one full bath with shower. There is also a pull-out sofa bed that would comfortably sleep two upstairs with a curtain divider for privacy, if the downstairs detached bedrooms are not utilized. The downstairs bedrooms contain one full-sized bunk bed that can sleep 4, an additional full-size bed, washer and dryer and a half-bathroom. We have had as many as 10 people sleeping in the house, but recommend it for no more than 6, as it is a small cottage.

I am a homemaker, triathlete,

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007

I chose Edisto Beach because, as a southerner, I have vacationed along SC beaches all my life. To me, Edisto Beach is what Myrtle Beach's coasts used to be. It is a family beach, unspoiled by too much commercialism. It reminds me of Martha's Vineyard. Everyone prefers biking to driving their cars. The island's very design prevents too much commercial development. Yet, you have access to a golf course, shops and restaurants, water sports and some of the finest fishing around. There is a lovely walking/biking trail near our cottage that is predominantly shaded. Biking/walking/golfcart easements are on practically every road in Edisto. To me, it is the perfect getaway destination.

I bought this property in 2007 because it reminded me of the cottage I enjoyed with my Godparents when I was growing up. That old cottage had been moved from Darlington, SC to a site in Surfside Beach. It was imperfect, with its uneven floors, and aged appearance. It was a place where we could let our hair down and be casual and just enjoy the beach. The first time I walked into my Edisto cottage, I had that same other-world feeling - like I had stepped back in time when things were simpler and time could just slow down. In fact, I named the cottage after Louis, my Godfather. He was in the final stages of pancreatic cancer when I brought him down to view the property. He whispered, 'I love it,' and that was enough for me. He and I both felt like we were back at the beach cottage I had grown up enjoying. That is exactly the way I feel when I come home to Edisto. When I leave, I am rejuvenated and ready to get back to 2012. I love to relax in the hammock. The kids and I will pull out the fire pit and roast hotdogs near the picnic table in the side yard. My husband and I love to walk the beaches in the early morning hours when the sun comes up. The dolphins especially like the morning hours and you can see them in little herds less than 40 yards from the surf. At night, our children like to take their flashlights and go ghost crab hunting. The little white crabs scamper all over the beach and the kids chase them and sometimes they bravely catch them and chase me with them! When the bowl-like jelly fish are around, they pick them up by their rounded tops and 'chuck' them deeper in the ocean. My sons love to skimboard too. We keep it simple down there and focus on the memories that we make together. So, come on in, but kick your shoes off at the door. Enjoy the original floors (and all their character and imperfections) and remember what it was like when you were a teenager and could head to the beach in super casual comfort

DISAPPOINTED

I wish it were possible to post pictures in reviews. First, I agree with others - the location is great, the community of Edisto is ideal ... however: the 2 bedrooms on the lower level are mold filled and unusable, it should not be advertised as a 4 bedroom. The sunroom is accessible from the porch but not the main living area - not horrible but again I feel it is false advertising. The sunroom is filthy. We let the kids swing on the swing in there but nothing else. The drainage pipe is cracked outside and backs up easily. The kitchen sink pipes are cracked and leak into a bucket. The kitchen cabinets had hair hanging from them from a too quick wipe down. With a little fixing up and a lower price this cottage could be nice. We were very disappointed in the condition. We are likely to return to Edisto Beach but not to this cottage. I don't expect perfection but I do think if you are renting your property out you should invest, regularly, in repairs and upgrades.

MOTHER'S DAY GETAWAY!

Mother's Day Getaway!
  • 5 of 5
We loved this charming cottage! It was a great weekend getaway. It's definitely an old-school beach bungalow (uneven floors, small rooms, low ceilings, etc) but it was cute, clean, and a quick walk to the beach...my 3 and 5 year old children made the trek carrying their beach toys, no problem. I think the only things to note are 1) the bedrooms downstairs can only be accessed from outside...so not an appropriate place to have young kids sleep! and 2) there's no dishwasher (as my husband said...that's why he brought me!). The owner was friendly and easy to contact both before and during our trip. We hope to visit again soon!!!

WONDERFUL TIME!!!!!

  • 5 of 5
We came for a short visit b/c my son was starting school in Charleston the next week. I had heard about the island from my son and he wanted to go back and show his girlfriend. It is a perfect beach cabin. The colors, the trees, everything was just right. I will definitely come back! We did not use the bottom 2 beds, and the only suggestion would be to put a tv and a mini fridge there. The outside shower was a hit with all of us! Wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you To a wonderful owner. May the Good Lord bless you and keep you,
The Grahams

JUST OK

  • 3 of 5
Upper part of the house –Pleasant and makes you feel like you are at home; very airy and light.

Lower part of the house - Both rooms are small and the washer and dryer are located in one of the bedrooms. The whole area smelled slightly of mold and was not ideal for sleeping. We used the rooms to store our bikes. We were in and out a few times a day and the smell never disappeared.

Porch - furniture was old, a lamp was covered with dark dust, and there were holes in the screens.

Landscaping – There is hardly any grass growing. We did keep in mind that this is a beach house in South Carolina so it is hot and humid, and you can’t expect nice grass growth without special efforts such as a sprinkler system or every day watering. However, some properties on Edisto Beach have beautiful lawns and here the effort was clearly not put in.

Location - 5 stars for the walking distance to the beach, 1 star for location on an intersection leading to a local recycling and water station so on average 3 stars.

Overall - I would not come back to this house and it is not because of some old furniture or dirty lamp as these issues can be easily fixed, but because of its location. I am an outdoor person and if I was not at the beach I was sitting on the porch, and I found the local traffic to the recycling and water station irritating.

DISAPPOINTED

  • 2 of 5
We were really looking forward to this vacation but found it to be a little disappointing. There is only one inside shower. The beds are just full size and very noisy. The baseboards, fan and the cold air returns were caked with dust and greasy. We wouldn't even use the fan because it would blow dust every where. The grass was not mowed causing there to be lots of sand burrs. We made the most of it and still had a good time together with family but I don't plan to rent this house ever again. The owner was a delight to work with they just need a new cleaning service.

Owner's Response: Are you sure we are talking about the same house? Before this renter's stay, I washed all slipcovers on the furniture, replaced mattress pads (which I do with each guest) and replaced the AC filters in addition to cleaning the property. When this guest asked me where the sheets and towels were, I knew that they had not done their due diligence in reading the property description and lease agreement. As all my renters can attest, the property description is very clear. The photos of the property are descriptive and I make sure that all guests know what they are getting when they book their stay. I am saddened that this experience was not what they expected. As far as the sand spurs, this is typical for any beach property. It is important that you wear your flipflops and remove them before you enter the house. A word to future renters, please read before you buy. I like entertaining guests who are truly happy with our little house. Nevertheless, we take all comments seriously and will do our best to make sure that future guests are happy.
