About Richard

My family absolutely loves the outdoors and we also live on the Boardman River down stream. We enjoy kayaking, gardening, hiking, and bird watching. We take our two dogs for long hikes on the state land while looking for new exciting finds that the woods have to offer. We are also excited to share this with others who share our passion for the outdoors. This cottage is a unique place!

Richard purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Richard chose Traverse City

I purchased this property quite honestly because I have been here most of my life and I have found it to be in one of the best locations in the area. I love the outdoors but like the fact that I can be in Traverse City quickly with a beautiful drive to get there. The wildlife, fresh air, and of course the Boardman river being steps away, well you just can't beat it. I see all types of birds , deer, fox, partridge, well it goes on and on. Truly it has all the flavor of the now well known 'Pure Michigan.' And how about the Fall Colors

What makes this cottage unique

Wildlife including: deer, turkeys, partridge, rabbits, bobcats, and ducks. Birdwatching: Piliated woodpeckers, eagles, hawks, owls, hummingbirds, and orioles. Hiking, fourwheeling, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing. Beautiful view of river. Kayaking, tubing, fishing, and swimming. And lets not forget the fall colors! Also we have the Chery festival in July, the Horse show in July, and the Film festival after that!

This place is the perfect get away!!!! We will deffintly be going back for an entire week. Richard is very welcoming and helpful and this cottage is in beautiful setting back in the woods. Peaceful and so relaxing. I would like to go back up in the summer and go canoeing. It was so peaceful we didn't want to leave and go home. I would say to anyone if your considering renting a cottage this is the place to be up in traverse city.

A perfect get away!

  • 5 of 5

This place was the much needed medicine we needed to get away from it all. Inside is your typical well kept cottage. It is very clean, bright, and well appointed. Everything you could possibly need is provided including a washer and dryer with all the laundry soap, fabric softer, dryer sheets, the works. There are even games and puzzles, maps, and information about the area. There are two sliding glass doors in the main living room/ dining room area so you have a beautiful view of the forest and can see and hear the Boardman River from everywhere on the main floor. We had two wonderful nights sleep on the very comfortable bed in the Master bedroom with the sound of the river from the sliding glass door and balcony overlooking the river. We used the wood stove in the living room the morning we left and it worked great. Richard had set up the firewood for both the wood stove and the fire pit outside with plenty of extra firewood. It was such a treat having a fire right next to the river. The hot tub was wonderful. Richard heated it up for us before we got there and it was ready to go. We spent time relaxing in the two hammocks outside. Wonderful! Richard took us down the river with two of his kayaks and we floated back to the cottage in a little under two hour trip down the river. (He offered longer trips if we wanted) I doubt you would find any other rental in the area where you can do this. We had an amazing time, absorbing the beautiful sights, floating along the quiet river with several Mallards and even a Loon at one point. Even if the rest of our experience was not as good as it was, we would still come back for this!

Richard gave us a few suggestions for restaurants and we chose Apache Trout. I would definitively recommend this place. They have fantastic whitefish (have it grilled) and are right on the bay. We also shopped at Oryana, which I highly recommend, for fresh vegetable juice and organic baked goods.

We love Traverse City and are so glad we found this place that provides a private, peaceful solitude away from the hustle and bustle when you want to relax. It was just perfect having this place as a home base for all our activities. We can't thank Richard enough for his hospitality. He was a phone call away for anything we needed. We will be back!

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

Great place to relax and let all your stresses melt away. View was amazing of the river, and so private. We loved the fire pit by the river, which was all ready to go. House was clean and had everything you could need, Richard was so kind and helpful, even offered my hubby a fishing rod to use in the river, I can't wait to go back!

Beautiful Long Weekend with Friends

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a long weekend at this property and had an awesome time. Three couples stayed and had a fabulous time at the property, traverse city and surrounding areas. The property is private, on the river and very, very clean. The sound of the river flowing and leaves falling made the perfect setting for relaxing and enjoying a wonderful fall weekend in upper Michigan. Richard was great - very responsive and interested in ensuring our stay was perfect. The cabin was well stocked and offered great views of the river. Richard has the wood stove and fire pits full of wood upon our arrival so that we could simply strike a match and enjoy the warmth and comfort of a wood fire. The property is only 20 minutes from Traverse City so you can be in the country while at the cabin and in a short time enjoy the many benefits of city life. I highly recommend this property. One thing to consider; to gain entry to the cabin you need to climb some stairs so if you have physical limitations you should talk with Richard for details on the stairs. Otherwise, great location and great place equal a great vacation!

Relaxing, and secluded vacation getaway.

  • 5 of 5

This tranquil home is nestled across a river and within the trees. The views from any angle of this home are breathtaking. We were there in mid fall and the colors were just fantastic. The Hot tub is conveniently located out the back door of the house and was already warmed up when we arrived. Richard, the owner, had ensured everything we would need was there and ready to be used. Now, there wasn't food, but everything else was. From dishes, silverware, glasses, pots, pans, water filter jugs, coffee machine's, towels, blankets, and even enough firewood to have a fire every night for a week. This home come highly recommended, as it should be.

River Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was a nice weekend getaway for us. The cabin is in a nice location, gives you that feeling of being secluded and alone even though you do have neighbors close by. The cabin was clean and suited our needs perfectly. The weather didn't cooperate with us at all that entire weekend which kept us indoors more so than we had planned, making it hard to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Probably the best for us though as we have a very active 2yr old. We would definitely would like to go back, maybe when our little one is alittle bigger and we don't have to worry so much about him finding his way into the river!
