Skiing:
The Dachstein Ski Region Annaberg - Russbach - Gosau is on the doorstep and has 140km of interlinked piste. This is a fantastic family skiing area and given that it is not as well known as other ski area's in Austria it means that you can spend more time skiing and less time waiting at the ski lifts.
Lakes:
If you prefer lakes then you must visit Gosausee which is a short drive away and also Hallstattersee. Hallstatt, is the oldest still inhabited village in Europe, owing its longevity to the local deposits of salt. The salt mine is worth a visit or you can meander through the cobbled streets and enjoy a drink overlooking the lake.
Wolfgangsee is also worth a visit and although slightly further afield (approx 40 mins drive) it is a beautiful lake and one of the most romantic in Austria. The village of St Gilgen which lies at the western edge of the lake has many associations with Mozart as his mother, Anna Maria Pertl, was born here in 1720 and his sister, Nannerl, settled here after she married.
St Wolfgang which sits at the opposite side of Wolfgangsee is a very quaint village with lots of interesting shops dotted throughout its cobbled streets.
Salzburg:
The beautiful baroque city of Salzburg is a mere 35 minutes drive from the cottage. Mozart was born here in 1756 and the house of his birthplace is now a popular tourist attraction. The city is also the setting of the Salzburg festival, a world renowned annual event that attracts music lovers, especially Mozart fans from all over the world. Salzburg was also the setting for the 'Sound Of Music' and you can join one of the many tours themed on the film.
A stroll through the beautiful Mirabell gardens or a funicular ride upto the Schloss at the top of the hill for a breathtaking view over the city and the river Salzach are also worth experiencing.
Only 45 minutes drive to the west and across the border into Germany is the town of Berchtesgaden which sits at the bottom of the world famous Kehlsteinhaus which became Hitler's favourite residence also known as 'The Eagles Nest'.
