Carcassonne City Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Luxury double Bedroom apartments, sleep two, town centre, all amenities

The apartments at Rue Barbes are three beautifully restored apartments located in the heart of Carcassonne old town in La Bastide, just off the market square in Place Carnot. Each of the individually decorated apartments occupies one entire floor of the property and is named after a famous French photographer. The apartments are perfectly located for the weekly markets, shops and alfresco dining. The property dates from the 1730's and the owners have kept the character of the property but with all the benefits of modern fittings, antique furniture and fine art. From the moment you walk into the apartments you will be transported to the elegance and romance of 18th century France, but with all modern comforts. Classic french beds, luxurious linen, deluge showers, antique furniture and modern kitchens. The apartments are perfect for couples wanting a romantic break or for small group bookings of up to three couples.

Carcassonne La Cite: Carcassonne is has one of the most beautiful fairy tale castles to be found anywhere in the world. It is the cultural and historical capital of the Aude region sitting upon the Aude river and crossed by the breathtakingly beautiful Canal du Midi.

During the summer it is host to innumerable festivals, and has the largest and most spectacular firework display in France on the 14th of July. Even in low season and winter there is plenty to do with the winter markets, truffle and duck fairs and antique fairs. The Carcassonne Festival takes place from June to August with many of the events taking place in Place Carnot. The famous market on Saturday is a must for all those visiting this beautiful and unspoilt part of France. The town is thronging with visitors discovering the Cathar castle and the fabulous history as well as the wines and restaurants of the region. With the spectacular fireworks in July, the fairs and festivals the apartments are perfectly located.

Cathar Country: The region around Carcassonne is world famous for the Cathar history, and for the many castles that were built from the 12th to the 14th century. Many of these have survived and worth visiting especially for anyone interested in the legend and myths of the Holy Grail. Within an hour you can be walking or skiing in the mountains of the Arriege, and within two hours in the Pyrenees. The number of places to visit in one week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone for a week.

For Golfers there is a superb golf course at Carcassonne, as well as Mazamet, Perpignan, Toulouse and Bezier. A selection of men and ladies golf clubs are available for rental.

Eating and Dining: Carcassonne sits on the edge of the Langedoc wine region and is literally surrounded by vineyards and wineries. We can organise wine tasting tours for our guests and advise you on local restaurants and local specialities. Carcassonne has a number of Michelin starred restaurants as many superb bistros especially in the old town and la Cite. For those with a car we can recommend several wonderful restaurants in the surrounding region.

Each apartment has a library of guide books and directory of local events.

About Alex and Pipa Francis

Pipa and Alex moved to France with their young family in 2003. Having been often disappointed with the quality of holiday apartments where we had stayed, we decided to start our own business in Carcassonne providing holiday lettings for visitors to this historic City.

We bought this town house in 2008. At the time it was an almost derelict building. Today it has been patiently and lovingly restored keeping the character of a 18th century town house but with all modern conveniences. The ground floor is now a delightful and bright wine shop and art gallery.

We have lived in France for 10 years, brought up six children and want to share our love of France and Carcassonne with our friends and guests. The apartments were first rented out in 2010; the final part of the project has been the restoration and opening of the boutique wine shop in December 2012 which also a gallery and tasting room. Located at 38 rue Barbes on the ground floor, this wonderful and warm locale has quickly become a favourite meeting place for guests and customers alike. We live in the heart of the Minervois countryside about 15 minutes form town but we are always on hand. This family run business is on hand to help our guests make the most of their holiday.

Alex and Pipa Francis purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Alex and Pipa Francis chose Carcassonne City

Rue Barbes is close to the centre of old Carcassonne town. It is an historic district with lots of shops, and the street itself is rapidly up and coming with new boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and a chocolatiere. The main market is a few paces away and it is safe and friendly place with lots of bustle. We love the atmosphere, the sound, colour and local characters, the wonderful bakeries and delicatessens and outstanding bistros and cafes are all with minutes of the apartments.

What makes this apartment unique

If you like wines or just want to learn more this has to be the best location for your holiday. In our shop on the ground floor we have an excellent selection of wines from local growers plus wines from further afield in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal with some new world wines joining us in the Spring. We are partnered with several wine tour companies and the local wine school who offer days tastings and courses.

Great apartment in a central location.

  • 4 of 5

This apartment was easy to book and very comfortable (and well equipped) for two people. The owners were very helpful in settling in and our stay was most enjoyable. Carcassonne has lots to offer and, being very central, the accommodation gave an ideal base from which to explore the town and the surrounding area. The only drawback is that it's on the third floor which gives an ideal opportunity to get a little fitter but it would be difficult for the less able-bodied.

Great Stay in Carcassonne

  • 4 of 5

The apartment has an excellent location for both the "new" city of Carcassonne and the medieval city. The apartment was very clean and nicely furnished. The owner gave us great sightseeing and restaurant recommendatios. Just keep the stairs in mind when you book!

Perfect city location

  • 5 of 5

The listing was accurate in description and portrayal of the apartment, which was clean and charming and felt very "French". The kitchen was very well-stocked with lots of thoughtful extras, and the bed was very comfortable, with lovely linen. There were two things that made it perfect, however: the location, and the owners. The apartment is within minutes' walk of the fabulous market on the main square, and has many shops, cafés and restaurants in the immediate vicinity - it's hardly a schlepp to get your croissants in the morning, and the wonderful array of food on the market means you will be glad you've got self-catering facilities. It's about a 10min walk into La Cité, which worked well for us – I think we'd have found the densely touristy Cité area a bit too intense to stay in, whereas the Bastide, where the apartment is, feels like a "real" French town. And since the apartment is also situated directly above the wine shop run by the owners, Alex and Pipa, we also had an in-house sommelier who kindly organised a wine tasting for us, gave us a discount on the local wines we wanted to try, and was brilliant at advising on what to see, where to eat, etc. We tried several of the restaurants listed in the guide to the area they'd compiled for guests, and ate extremely well in all of them (esp recommend the one in someone's garden!). Would definitely recommend to friends, and will be coming back. There are actually three apartments in the house too, so we plan to come back with friends and book the whole lot!

Truly special place at an affordable price

  • 5 of 5

We had wonderful stay here - our only disappointment is that we were only staying three nights, and not three weeks! The apartment is gorgeous, light and airy; if you are looking to book somewhere romantic and special that doesn't break the bank, look no further. The little touches (beautiful carpets and decoration, proper cotton sheets, the most comfortable sofa in the world, etc) make this a great place to stay, and the apartment is well equipped with everything you might need from cooking equipment to shower gel. The antique bed is exquisite (so beautiful we didn't mind that it was just an inch too short for us to really stretch out, especially since it was otherwise really comfortable). The location is perfect for exploring la Cite, the canal du midi, and nipping across to the brilliant food market on Saturday morning and the free wi-fi and file of recommendations were a great help. As mentioned in other reviews, it did get a little noisy on some nights - but nothing beyond what you would expect when you stay in any central town location. We would highly recommend this beautiful apartment...although it's tempting to keep it as our secret!

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week here, the apartment is beautifully appointed with everything you could need. It is in a perfect location, near everything but quiet too. Planty of shops, bars and restaurants within minutes and we walked to all the sights in Carcassonne. The kitchen had everything you need to cook during your stay if you couldnt resist the food markets, and the bathroom was modern with a good shower.

All the communication, booking etc was easy and very friendly.

The sitting room was really comfortable ( my husband had a nap often on the sofa) and the furnishings were very tasteful. It is one of the nicest apartments we have ever stayed in. We would have stayed again this year but couldn't get flights for the time we wanted. We will certainly be back.

Owner's Response: It is a real delight to have a review posted like this, especially from guests who have stayed in the past and thinking about returning. We always welcome repeat bookings and are starting to see more and more familiar faces. We welcome it when guests recommend us to their friends and always happy to offer a special rate for repeat bookings and recommendations. In the future guests who stay in the apartments will be able have the added benefit of joining our regular wine tastings, free of charge. Thank you Karen and hope to see you soon. Alex and Pipa

Great place to explore Carcassonne

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fantastic two-week break in Carcassone, staying at the Willi Ronis apartment. The old citie is amazing and the town surrounding it is full of character and steeped in French tradition. We loved soaking in the atmosphere of Carcassone, enjoying its culture, fine foods and wines - and great coffees. The apartment, in Rue Barbes, is close to the beautiful square (Place Carnot) where we enjoyed French cuisine and rich red wines and watching the world go by in 80 degree tempuratures. The apartment itself is a credit to the owners. We had a warm welcome from Alex. It is very nicely furnished and comfortable. And it's a great place to enjoy a night in - with good music, fresh salads, delicious cheeses and the finest Chablis.

Walks to the old citie were greatly cherished. There is so much to see and do, particularly if you love history and romance. At night, the citie is lit up in all its glory. The restaurants are alive with laughter and music and the views are simply stunning.

For us, the highlights were:

The old citie - never to be forgotten. Awe-inspiring from any direction and a treat to be in.

The Canal du Midi - stretching from Narbonnes to Toulouse. A great place to relax.

Place Carnot - the place to see and enjoy the best of Carcassone culture.

Narbonne - up market, with an amazing cathedral, Hotel de Ville and canal.

Lagrasse - the most amazing medieval town imaginable. A marvel to visit.

We had great food and wines at:

La Ferme - one of the best delis we have ever been to. Just off Place Carnot, it has a rich selection of cheeses, hams and wines. Expensive but fantastic.

La Roulotte - a restaurant tucked away in 6 Rue Denisse, just off Place Carnot. A great host and brilliant salads and seafood dishes.

Longchamp - a busy restaurant in Place Carnot with a colourful host and truly delicious seafood platters.

Restaurants in the old citie square - most serve great food and are very friendly.

Le Carnot - in Place Carnot, serving great ice cream desserts and cocktails.

The pizza restaurant at the end of Rue Barbes - serving the freshest pizzas.

We would highly recommend trips on the Canal du Midi. They are great value for money.

We took the train from Carcassonne to Narbonne. It was a little expensive (at 45 euros return for 2) but was on time!

We didn't have a car. We didn't need one. There is so much to see and enjoy in Carcassonne we could easily have spent another fortnight here and not seen everything.
