Carcassonne City Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Luxury double Bedroom apartments, sleep two, town centre, all amenities

The apartments at Rue Barbes are three beautifully restored apartments located in the heart of Carcassonne old town in La Bastide, just off the market square in Place Carnot. Each of the individually decorated apartments occupies one entire floor of the property and is named after a famous French photographer. The apartments are perfectly located for the weekly markets, shops and alfresco dining. The property dates from the 1730's and the owners have kept the character of the property but with all the benefits of modern fittings, antique furniture and fine art. From the moment you walk into the apartments you will be transported to the elegance and romance of 18th century France, but with all modern comforts. Classic french beds, luxurious linen, deluge showers, antique furniture and modern kitchens. The apartments are perfect for couples wanting a romantic break or for small group bookings of up to three couples.

Carcassonne La Cite: Carcassonne is has one of the most beautiful fairy tale castles to be found anywhere in the world. It is the cultural and historical capital of the Aude region sitting upon the Aude river and crossed by the breathtakingly beautiful Canal du Midi.

During the summer it is host to innumerable festivals, and has the largest and most spectacular firework display in France on the 14th of July. Even in low season and winter there is plenty to do with the winter markets, truffle and duck fairs and antique fairs. The Carcassonne Festival takes place from June to August with many of the events taking place in Place Carnot. The famous market on Saturday is a must for all those visiting this beautiful and unspoilt part of France. The town is thronging with visitors discovering the Cathar castle and the fabulous history as well as the wines and restaurants of the region. With the spectacular fireworks in July, the fairs and festivals the apartments are perfectly located.

Cathar Country: The region around Carcassonne is world famous for the Cathar history, and for the many castles that were built from the 12th to the 14th century. Many of these have survived and worth visiting especially for anyone interested in the legend and myths of the Holy Grail. Within an hour you can be walking or skiing in the mountains of the Arriege, and within two hours in the Pyrenees. The number of places to visit in one week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone for a week.

For Golfers there is a superb golf course at Carcassonne, as well as Mazamet, Perpignan, Toulouse and Bezier. A selection of men and ladies golf clubs are available for rental.

Eating and Dining: Carcassonne sits on the edge of the Langedoc wine region and is literally surrounded by vineyards and wineries. We can organise wine tasting tours for our guests and advise you on local restaurants and local specialities. Carcassonne has a number of Michelin starred restaurants as many superb bistros especially in the old town and la Cite. For those with a car we can recommend several wonderful restaurants in the surrounding region.

Each apartment has a library of guide books and directory of local events.

Pipa and Alex moved to France with their young family in 2003. Having been often disappointed with the quality of holiday apartments where we had stayed, we decided to start our own business in Carcassonne providing holiday lettings for visitors to this historic City.

We bought this town house in 2008. At the time it was an almost derelict building. Today it has been patiently and lovingly restored keeping the character of a 18th century town house but with all modern conveniences. The ground floor is now a delightful and bright wine shop and art gallery.

We have lived in France for 10 years, brought up six children and want to share our love of France and Carcassonne with our friends and guests. The apartments were first rented out in 2010; the final part of the project has been the restoration and opening of the boutique wine shop in December 2012 which also a gallery and tasting room. Located at 38 rue Barbes on the ground floor, this wonderful and warm locale has quickly become a favourite meeting place for guests and customers alike. We live in the heart of the Minervois countryside about 15 minutes form town but we are always on hand. This family run business is on hand to help our guests make the most of their holiday.

Alex and Pipa Francis purchased this apartment in 2008

Rue Barbes is close to the centre of old Carcassonne town. It is an historic district with lots of shops, and the street itself is rapidly up and coming with new boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and a chocolatiere. The main market is a few paces away and it is safe and friendly place with lots of bustle. We love the atmosphere, the sound, colour and local characters, the wonderful bakeries and delicatessens and outstanding bistros and cafes are all with minutes of the apartments.

If you like wines or just want to learn more this has to be the best location for your holiday. In our shop on the ground floor we have an excellent selection of wines from local growers plus wines from further afield in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal with some new world wines joining us in the Spring. We are partnered with several wine tour companies and the local wine school who offer days tastings and courses.

Excellent - Charming, tidy, central apartment

  • 5 of 5
We booked this apartment as a last minute getaway and were so pleased we did. This was the first time using the HomeAway website and we had never 'rented' accommodation before therefore we were feeling slightly wary as to what we would actually find when we got there.

We pre-booked a taxi from the airport (tel number supplied to us by the owners Alex & Pippa) and our transfer to the apartment was quick and easy. Alex was kindly there to greet us. As soon as we met him (we had spoken to him on the phone beforehand - as advised) any apprehensions we had entirely disappeared. The apartment was just as it is in the photographs, clean, tidy, charming and central. There is some noise with traffic at night time but that didn't deter from the enjoyment of our stay. We would say a lot of time and effort has been put in to making sure there is nothing lacking from the apartments. Alex gave us a list of local restaurants which we found extremely helpful and could not fault any of the ones we visited.

The town and area are perfect surroundings in which to spend a few days eating, drinking and relaxing. Such a short flight and transfer time will definitely ensure we will be wanting to visit Alex and Pippa again.

ps I forgot to tell you, Alex & Pippa we watered the plants as well!! :)

Perfect for elegant relaxation and exploration

  • 5 of 5
We don't like crowds so we timed our stay for after Easter (so things were open) and before the height of the summer crowds. What we wanted was a base from where we could explore the Bastide Medieval town and the Citadel by foot. These apartments are perfect for that.

You can eat out as much or as little as you like - with good kitchen facilities we could also relax in the flat with a simple salad, bread and cheese meal if we wanted; and some wine of course. Luckily Alex and Pipa's wine shop is on the ground floor so there isn't far to go for that either. You could cook a full meal if you desired, but we were on holiday.

There is a very good tourist info 50 yards away and Alex and Pipa are very knowledgeable about the area. They are fluent in French, English, wine, food and probably much more. Their recommendations for eateries were great, although the standard was generally high everywhere. It's always welcome to have a recommendation.

Of special note were the Creperie near the tourist info on Rue de Verdun and particularly Le Grand Bouffe near the station and canal - so good we went back on the last night as well. I shall be going to the effort of highly recommending it separately (to non-vegetarians).

The Bastide (the medieval town) is great to explore with vibrant markets, beautiful churches and architecture. One has a tower where you can get fantastic views of the town and across the river to the Citadel. You can see right from the snow capped Pyreneese to the black mountains.

The Citadel is exactly what any child from 5 to 105 expects and more. A great place to explore if you are able bodied and don't mind climbing a few steps for the reward of great views. The tourist information centre there runs free tours in several languages to give you the history and take you around. You can also pre-book these from the TI in the Bastide. The only place you need to pay (€8.50) to get in is the Chateau itself but that is well worth it because you can walk around a good third of the battlements with the same ticket. Another third of the battlements are being developed and will be open in the next year or so I think.

The main historical attractions can be seen over a long weekend but there is a lot more to do in and around Carcassonne. We had a relaxing week mainly eating, drinking reading and watching the world go by and for that the apartment was absolutely perfect. Thanks Alex, Pipa.

Comfortable Apartment For Two

  • 4 of 5
Very nice, comfortable apartment near Place Carnot, perfect for a couple exploring Southwest France. Apartment is clean and well-maintained, although a bit more worn out than the pictures show. Parking is close by, just a few blocks, and we paid 20 Euros upon arrival for our entire stay (ask the cashier if you can get a weekly rate and a key card for entry/exit). Pippa and Alex had been traveling and not present upon our arrival, but their son Matthew got us situated and helped us with our bags up the stairs to the apartment. We had some trouble with the washing machine, and Pippa let us use the one in the 3rd floor apartment, which was vacant at the time. There was more street noise at night and early morning than we expected, maybe the upper floors would be quieter. Overall, we were very happy with the apartment and would recommend it to others.

We visited the Fontfroide Abbey near Narbonne, the villages/towns of LaGrasse, Castelnaudary, Albi, Cordes sur Ciel, Gaillac, Lautrec, Nimes, Uzes. In Carcassonne, our favorite restaurant was L'Ecurie. We also enjoyed Restaurant 37, L'Als Assiette, and L'Oueil de Resto. Visiting the Old Cite is a must but one afternoon is all you need there (a bit touristy for our taste). Overall, a beautiful part of France to visit in the fall!

We've already booked for next year!

We've already booked for next year!
  • 5 of 5
We booked Alex and Pipa's elegant apartment for two, 'Cartier Bresson', hoping we had discovered a Midi retreat, where we could chill-out and live like locals for a week and where we would return in future to 'decompress'. We weren't disappointed! The apartment is ideally situated, just off the main square in the Bastide. Thanks to Alex, we found an excellent boulangerie just a minute away across the square and so could enjoy coffee and fresh croissants every morning. We bought some wonderful local produce from the Saturday market in the square - and from the indoor market, just the other side. And, after a pastis at what become 'our bar', enjoyed making a tasty supper in the apartment and washing it down with a glass or two of Alex's excellent wine.

Due to it's location, we wouldn't recommend the apartment for those looking for utter peace and tranquillity. Having said that, we slept very well. And for a couple, who wish to experience living in Carcassonne's bastide, we would say the apartment is ideal. Indeed, we have already booked for next year. Can't wait!

Great Hosts and Accommodations

  • 5 of 5
We went to France in January to attend the Sarlat Truffe Festival and to tour Carcassonne. While staying in Sarlat last year we noticed that there was a Truffe Festival on the 3rd weekend in January and booked flights and a home in that area. Never having been to Carcassonne, we decided to split our time and found the Cartier Bresson apartment. As it turned out, the truffe festival had been moved to the week before our arrival (signage still showed the 19th & 20th) and no truffe for us! Everything happens for a reason! We contacted Alex and came to Carcassonne early and I had mistakenly thought that the apt was located inside the walls of the medieval city. Luckily it wasn't, as the old city was virtually shut down during January and our apartment afforded the convenience and location to enjoy the local food and wine. Alex and Pippa just happened to have a fabulous wine shop on the ground floor with discounts for guests, advised us on the best places to eat and put us in contact with Barriere Truffes. Thus we had great food, wine and purchased beautiful truffes!!! The Bresson apartment is exactly as it appears in the photos, is spacious, clean, well maintained and most of all, comfortable. Wireless internet was reliable and there were numerous DVDs on hand. We would definitely recommend this property and would stay there again. The apartments are located on the first and second floors, thus may be difficult for the physically challenged. Larry & Kelly, Georgetown, Texas

Owner's Response: Thank you Larry and Kerry for your lovely review and comments. I should just say that if you are coming to Carcassonne for the black diamonds (Truffles) you should come during December to early March which is the peak of the season. We can also source summer truffles (which are smaller and less perfumed) and organise walks and truffle expeditions if you are minded! We have been asked to organise truffle dinners and wine pairing for next year so watch this space.
The wine shop is proving to be very popular with guests and the range of wines from our outstanding local growers is growing all the time.

We look forward to seeing you again!

Well Equipped Apartment

  • 3 of 5
Apartment is as nice as the pictures make it appear.
The owners were extremely accommodating in meeting us early to let us in and were very friendly and welcoming.
It's perfectly placed to get to from the station and visit the rest of the town and the mediaeval city.
The apartment is well equipped and had everything we needed.
The only downside was the bed which we found extremely uncomfortable (although very beautiful) and that was a shame because otherwise this would have been perfect.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Liz, we appreciate your comments but must note that most other guests have loved the beds and have the best of night's sleep. These are antique beds and very classically French so not as capacious as modern beds might be. Nevertheless unless one is very tall or very large they are comfortable with good quality mattresses and top quality linen.
