ROBERT DOISNEAU APARTMENT

Carcassonne City Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Luxury double Bedroom apartments, sleep two, town centre, all amenities

The apartments at Rue Barbes are three beautifully restored apartments located in the heart of Carcassonne old town in La Bastide, just off the market square in Place Carnot. Each of the individually decorated apartments occupies one entire floor of the property and is named after a famous French photographer. The apartments are perfectly located for the weekly markets, shops and alfresco dining. The property dates from the 1730's and the owners have kept the character of the property but with all the benefits of modern fittings, antique furniture and fine art. From the moment you walk into the apartments you will be transported to the elegance and romance of 18th century France, but with all modern comforts. Classic french beds, luxurious linen, deluge showers, antique furniture and modern kitchens. The apartments are perfect for couples wanting a romantic break or for small group bookings of up to three couples.

Carcassonne La Cite: Carcassonne is has one of the most beautiful fairy tale castles to be found anywhere in the world. It is the cultural and historical capital of the Aude region sitting upon the Aude river and crossed by the breathtakingly beautiful Canal du Midi.

During the summer it is host to innumerable festivals, and has the largest and most spectacular firework display in France on the 14th of July. Even in low season and winter there is plenty to do with the winter markets, truffle and duck fairs and antique fairs. The Carcassonne Festival takes place from June to August with many of the events taking place in Place Carnot. The famous market on Saturday is a must for all those visiting this beautiful and unspoilt part of France. The town is thronging with visitors discovering the Cathar castle and the fabulous history as well as the wines and restaurants of the region. With the spectacular fireworks in July, the fairs and festivals the apartments are perfectly located.

Cathar Country: The region around Carcassonne is world famous for the Cathar history, and for the many castles that were built from the 12th to the 14th century. Many of these have survived and worth visiting especially for anyone interested in the legend and myths of the Holy Grail. Within an hour you can be walking or skiing in the mountains of the Arriege, and within two hours in the Pyrenees. The number of places to visit in one week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone for a week.

For Golfers there is a superb golf course at Carcassonne, as well as Mazamet, Perpignan, Toulouse and Bezier. A selection of men and ladies golf clubs are available for rental.

Eating and Dining: Carcassonne sits on the edge of the Langedoc wine region and is literally surrounded by vineyards and wineries. We can organise wine tasting tours for our guests and advise you on local restaurants and local specialities. Carcassonne has a number of Michelin starred restaurants as many superb bistros especially in the old town and la Cite. For those with a car we can recommend several wonderful restaurants in the surrounding region.

Each apartment has a library of guide books and directory of local events.

Guestbook comments from the owner
We stayed in Rue Barbes from 25th - 29th March the second floor

apartment, which was ideal for two, very clean and well equipped. The

apartment is very central and a car is certainly not necessary - in fact we flew

from Bournemouth airport and within 2 1/2 hours we were at the door to the

apartment.

It was also very close to the railway station and therefore travelling around

was very easy, and it also gave my husband the opportunity to have one

more glass of wine, which if you enjoy the odd tipple couldn't be easier as

the owners also own the wine shop downstairs! Not only were they

extremely friendly but also very knowledgeable.

I certainly would return should I be in Carcassonne

Pipa and Alex moved to France with their young family in 2003. Having been often disappointed with the quality of holiday apartments where we had stayed, we decided to start our own business in Carcassonne providing holiday lettings for visitors to this historic City.

We bought this town house in 2008. At the time it was an almost derelict building. Today it has been patiently and lovingly restored keeping the character of a 18th century town house but with all modern conveniences. The ground floor is now a delightful and bright wine shop and art gallery.

We have lived in France for 10 years, brought up six children and want to share our love of France and Carcassonne with our friends and guests. The apartments were first rented out in 2010; the final part of the project has been the restoration and opening of the boutique wine shop in December 2012 which also a gallery and tasting room. Located at 38 rue Barbes on the ground floor, this wonderful and warm locale has quickly become a favourite meeting place for guests and customers alike. We live in the heart of the Minervois countryside about 15 minutes form town but we are always on hand. This family run business is on hand to help our guests make the most of their holiday.

Alex and Pipa Francis purchased this apartment in 2008

Rue Barbes is close to the centre of old Carcassonne town. It is an historic district with lots of shops, and the street itself is rapidly up and coming with new boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and a chocolatiere. The main market is a few paces away and it is safe and friendly place with lots of bustle. We love the atmosphere, the sound, colour and local characters, the wonderful bakeries and delicatessens and outstanding bistros and cafes are all with minutes of the apartments.

If you like wines or just want to learn more this has to be the best location for your holiday. In our shop on the ground floor we have an excellent selection of wines from local growers plus wines from further afield in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal with some new world wines joining us in the Spring. We are partnered with several wine tour companies and the local wine school who offer days tastings and courses.

The location is great. The space is roomy. Everything you needed is there. English speaking Owner wine experts Alex his son Mathew and daughter Gabriella are super friendly and helpful. Weekly parking is cheap and not far. Farmer market and la Cite are all just around the corner within walking distance.
We spent 2 months in France every year and been thru a lot. This is one of the best we stayed. Highly recommended.

HATED TO LEAVE

  • 5 of 5
This place is everything promised on their website - lovely property in a great location. It's an easy walk to the old city but in a part of town with much more available - cafés, bakeries, and other shops, plus a wonderful farmer's market held 3xweekly in the square only one block away. The apartment itself is clean, spacious, and charming, a nice combination of comfortable furniture and period pieces. The kitchen and bath are stocked with all the necessities (although I didn't find the hair dryer for a few days - in a bedroom dresser drawer). The owner and family are friendly and flexible. Highly recommended!

VERY GOOD AND CENTRAL APARTMENT

  • 4 of 5
The property was well located and was as listed, the couple that run it were extremely helpful and in particular in recommending a local restaurant and calling a taxi for us, as well as the complimentary bottle of wine.
However, there were just a couple of detaiils, which could slightly be improved. For example, we had emailed to advise them when we would be arriving but we were still welcomed with 'you're early', not a great start. The basics, such as tea, coffee and sugar were provide but clearly needed refreshing, some milk and bottled water in the the fridge would have been appreciated too and the lack of soap, wasn't expected. A wee bit more attention to detail and the place would be great.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review and comments.

We do our very best to make sure our guests are welcomed and checked in as soon as possible. Our normal check in time is 4pm. As you had an early arrival by plane you were advised to come to our office on arrival and we would do our best to check you in then or you could leave bags with us and come back later.

We do provide more than just tea and coffee and sugar in all the apartments for guests when they arrive. The tap water is in Carcassonne (and France in general) is extremely good and perfectly drinkable which is why we do not supply bottled water.

Our experience suggests that guests prefer to bring their own toiletries but we are more than happy to supply some at short notice if required.

BEAUTIFUL APARTMENT IN LE BASTIDE

  • 5 of 5
This a perfect base for exploring this area of France. It is convenient to the Cite` (about a 15 minute stroll across the Vieux Pont) as well as the Canal Midi and the shopping of Le Bastide. The apartment is very close to Place Gambetta which has a reasonably priced underground parking garage with a very friendly and helpful staff. The apartment itself is beautifully decorated and well equipped. If you want to cook for yourself, there are shops and markets close by or restaurants if you don't.

Alex was a great help, even braving a driving rain to rescue us 'perdu' Americans who didn't follow his instructions in the first place. When we return to this area, this is where we will stay.

BEAUTIFUL APARTMENT IN FANTASTIC LOCATION

  • 4 of 5
The apartment is even better in the flesh than the website looks. It is in a great location just round the corner from the main market square with shops, bars, coffee shops, patisseries all on the doorstep. Only a stroll from the River and short walk to the Citadel it is a great spot to explore the town and sites. Alex & Pipa were great hosts providing all the required info and advice to make the stay really relaxing and full of interest. The apartment is a great bolt-hole to explore the area and I would highly recommend it to couples for relaxing and romantic breaks. I would happily stay there again and would like to thank Alex & Pipa for their attention to detail and hard work to create such a unique and special property.
