Pat and I moved to Essex MT in 2003. We had both worked in Glacier Park for 4 years in the late 60's and later went to the U of MT in Missoula. We both love the Glacier Park area and moved back here from St. Paul after the kids left the house. They found us shortly thereafter and come out frequently to visit. Pat and I love the mountains and the 4 seasons and enjoy going into Glacier hiking and animal watching.

Tod O'Connell

Pat and Tod O'Connell purchased this house in 2010

The Essex Mountain House came up for sale in 2010. It was formerly owned by the Great Northern Railroad and used by the roadmaster years ago. It was moved to this site, I'm told, 30 to 40 years ago. We liked the look, layout and history of the place and bought it when it came up for sale. It was in need of TLC so we totally updated the kitchen and bathrooms and did a lot of finish work while retaining the a lot of the old character. We're both really happy with how it turned out.

Totally updated large kitchen, laundry and a full bath upstairs and downstairs make this 2 story house great for families and groups. A big yard on a double lot allows plenty of room for bbq's and relaxing on the property. Essex is located half way between East and West Glacier and across the highway from the Walton entrance to Glacier. We're near the Amtrack train platform so there's great train viewing also.

I don’t usually write reviews but this place is very special. Everything stated in the other reviews is spot on. This “cabin” has all the comforts and modern conveniences. We stayed 3 nights in late September and unfortunately the weather was transitioning toward winter. However, the weather couldn’t dim the beauty of GNP and only served to highlight the warmth and coziness of the cabin. The owners/hosts, Tod and Pat, are like a teenager’s dream parents: transparent, except when you need them. I look forward to returning to this beautiful place and staying longer.

My husband and I traveled with another couple to see Glacier National Park and desired a place that had character and warmth, was clean and tidy, and was located where travel to both sides of the park was accessed easily. We found all those qualities in this property. This home has charm. My friends especially enjoyed the trains and went out to the station to meet the conductor and chat. Keep in mind - GNP area is huge; however, with this home being just off highway 2 we could be on our way either to the east with trips to Many Glacier and Waterton or to the west with trips to Going to the Sun Road, Columbia Falls and Whitefish. This is a great place to stay if you want your own place away from the hustle and bustle of the park, want to be in something different than a home like yours in the burbs, enjoy trains, and want to stay in one place for a week while seeing as much of the area as possible. Thanks Tod and Pat! PS - Cookies were GREAT!

The only downside to our stay is that it was far too short. The Essex Mountain House is a great find in a beautiful location and our boys loved seeing the trains pass just beyond the back yard. We only had a weekend for a quick getaway from Missoula and we packed in the sights. We headed to the East side of the park the first day with several animal sightings, waterfalls, and lakes and we had delicious pie at The Park Cafe in St. Mary's. The second day we drove the Going-to-the-Sun Road from the West side up to Logan Pass and had a lovely hike up to Hidden Lake. We had the overlook to the lake all to ourselves! Tod was a wonderful host and we enjoyed talking to him about the great renovations he did on the house. We would love to stay in the house again sometime. It's very cozy. Maybe we'll visit in the winter. Thanks for an enjoyable stay!

Hidden Treasure -- Highly Recommend

Charming mountain home exceeded our expectations. Surrounded by majestic mountains, midway between East and West Glacier, it was a perfect base for our time in Glacier Natl Park. Hosts Tod and Pat had several helpful books on hikes and sites for the area. They live just two doors down, and gave us sage advice on easiest hikes, how to avoid crowds and where to see wildlife. The Izaak Walton Inn is a lovely walk away, with gift shop, historical bar and dining. Amtrak stops in this lovely little burg and would be a delightful way to travel here (car rental at Izaak Walton Inn). We would LOVE to return for winter activities. We highly recommend!

We had 6 people (parents and 4 adult children) at the house and it was more than enough room for all of us. It was much bigger than the pictures seem, decorated very well, and everything we needed to spend the week, including wi-fi! We highly recommend this place, it was definitely a bargain, and the hosts were more than helpful when needed. Great place to relax after full days of hiking - Triple divide pass and Highline Trail were our two longest and they were great. Two of our kids caught the Amtrak train (less than 100 yards from the back yard!) at the end of the week. Will recommend to all our friends and anyone who asks.
