The sheltered screened front porch with rocking chairs continues to be a favorite. The towering observation deck provides plenty of space for star, sky & sea gazing. There's also the screened outdoors shower that makes it convenient to rinse the sand & salt off after a days play.
Rare to see on this part of the island, Nirvana's yard is wooded & alive with song-bird activity as well as a bird-bath and a place to sit among the trees to meditate or contemplate. . . .
Nirvana is 'old-time' with not a whole lot of gadgetry. Plan on hand washing the dishes and not doing laundry. Mom would say: 'who wants to do laundry on vacation?' so there's no clothes-washer nor dryer nor air-conditioning nor telephone nor cable-tv. Dad's job used keep him 'on-call' so of course 'who wants the phone to ring while the folks were on vacation?' Not our Ma! There was no telephone for many years and once again there's no land-line telephone. My folks thought people would spend their days at the beach so there was no air-conditioning with the high-set windows, dark wood paneling, wide over-hangs to shade the windows and a sea breeze that blows throughout the house with the windows and sliding-door open. It's been an ongoing discussion in the guest book with our guests whether to 'change' to A/C or not. Despite the lack of A/C, we have managed to obtain 'pool privileges' at a near-by sub-division for our Nirvana guests. The television was another bone of contention as Mom didnt really like the programing of TV nor did she like the zombification of TV watchers but for awhile, due to the 'rental-professionals' advice, we did have TV but no longer. You know as well as I that there's hardly anything 'on' worth watching anyways. If you need a TV then there's other businesses on-island such as tackle shops, restaurants and pubs that do have TVs on premises.
With ceiling fans in each room, tiled floors and an ocean breeze wafting through, Nirvana is a wonderful nearly-hidden gem.
Check-in on SUNDAYS & check-out on SUNDAYS help lessen the 'heavy-traffic-volume Saturdays' that prevail on the Outer Banks. No-one enjoys the traffic-jam that occurs 70 miles up the road in northern Dare County. Or Nirvana is also available at daily/nightly rates too.
Simple, economical & easy to maintain. This cottage provides a place for rest & relaxation for you to find some peace at our beach haven.

About The Owner
Born in the scenic Hudson Valley of NY state & residing at Cape Hatteras, NC USA since 1982. That's me, at your service. . .
The Owner purchased this cottage in 1964
Why The Owner chose Avon
My parents drove south from Orange County, New York until they 'liked it'. That landed Mum, Pop, 3 daughters & the irish setter in Nags Head, NC. Once the bridge was completed, my father drove us o'er to Hatteras Island & promptly purchased this tract of land that Nirvana inhabits. It was nothing but sea oats & sand dunes & wow, just look at it now! Over the years, Nirvana cottage has managed to be a treasure trove of nostalgic memories, now that our parents have passed on. My sisters and I continue to utilize & share this cottage with you. We try to uphold the principles & simplicity that our folks desired to share so a family vacation may still be with-in reach to others that wish to flock to the coast for their vacation needs.
What makes this cottage unique
This is a great place to be rocking on the porch. Listening to the call of the seagulls. Watching the pelicans fly formation over the waves. Beaching, surfing, walking the shoreside beach. Catching dinner while surf-fishing practically right out the front door. Hearing the ocean lulling you to sleep. Sleeping outside on the deck under the cover of a starry night sky. The aroma of beach bonfires in the salty, night air. Enjoying the wild birds as they flit around the trees on the property. It's a beautiful place to 'be'.
