Situated at over 10,000ft and just a short walk from the base of Chairlift 4, the Alpenglow Chalet is waiting to become your family's favorite getaway. One of the newest accommodations in Taos Ski Valley, this vacation property offers *unmatched* views of Kachina Peak and the Sangre de Cristo mountains surrounding the ski area. Thanks to it's height in the valley, sunrise and sunset paints a special glow on the mountains, hence the name 'Alpenglow Chalet'.

This property has all the extra touches to make your vacation memorable. Downstairs it has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus plenty of storage for your outdoor gear. Heated tile floors take the edge off the brisk mountain temperatures and the fire place in the middle of the floor-to-ceiling windows is the perfect setting for a night of stories, cards, and laughs. Also, enjoy the large, flat screen TV recently installed in July 2011. The kitchen is open and has plenty of counter space for cooking big meals for the large groups that fill our condo. Upstairs, you'll find comfortable couches, a TV for DVDs, and dozens of movies and board games- it's perfect for the kids or young adults. Additionally, there is one queen, one standard, and three twin bunks in this spacious loft area.

If you don't feel like cooking, you're in luck! The highly-acclaimed Bavarian Restaurant is our neighbor. You will find delicious homemade German meals and the finest imported beers served in a beautiful and rustic Bavarian lodge. No need to drive, it's just down the trail!

In the summer, the Alpenglow Chalet is the perfect headquarters for all your outdoor adventures. Adjacent trails lead into protected Wilderness Areas and onto the picturesque Williams Lake. Towering above the condo is Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico, and a great place to hike. We also neighbor 'Northside', a collection of mountain bike and hiking trails for all skill levels.

During the winter, a short 5 minute walk takes you to the base of the Kachina lift, where you can skip the crowds by putting on your skis or snowboard starting your day on the fresh backside snow! The easy access to and from the condo means you can have a hot lunch in the well stocked kitchen, or sit on the deck and watch your family and friends ski the Kachina bowl and trails.

Roads are well maintained in the summer and plowed in the winter, however chains (available w/ most car rentals) or a 4x4/AWD is strongly recommended in the winter.

About Jennifer Hillberg

We met serving in the Air Force. Mark & Heather were married while stationed in England, where they also met Rob. The three of us have traveled the world together and shared many amazing memories. Mark and Rob still serve in the Air Force and climb mountains together in a charity program. Mark and Heather have two kids that are quickly growing up to be amazing skiers and rock climbers.

We LOVE the mountains and that is why we bought this property. It is perfect for our families and we hope you are able to experience the stunning sunsets and unbeatable views. Each morning we wake up in the condo puts a huge smile on our faces! Give it a try- we're willing to bet you'll love it too.

Since we are moving all over the nation/world, we wanted a place we could always meet at and call 'home' together. So, while stationed in Albuquerque, we purchased this beautiful property! Now stationed elsewhere in the nation, we still meet up there at least 2-3 times a year in order to share more good times in the mountains and keep involved in our friends' and families' lives.

What makes this condo unique

WE HAVE A HEATED SINGLE GARAGE WITH SKI/SNOWBOARD RACKS FOR GUEST USE! Plus, we love how close it is to Chairlift 4. It gives us time to have a leisurely breakfast before walking w/ the kids to the lift area. Plus, having a beer at the Bavarian is nice b/c we can just walk back to the condo and not worry about driving.

In the summer we like to enjoy our coffee on the deck, then head out for a hike along the creek (just a stones throw away) or get our discs out for the free frisbee golf course.

At night we love to cook large meals and feed big crowds of friends and family, then gather around the fireplace for card games that last late into the night.

If it's winter, we make sure to go out for at least one night of moon-lit skiing in the backcountry above Lake Williams. It's a magical experience. (But we don't recommend it unless you are an expert in backcountry travel)

Fun Family ski weekend!

Alpenglow Chalet was perfect for a gathering of all ourgrandchildren, their parents, and us to ski Taos. Arriving in a big snowstorm presented some challenges on the steep road up from the ski area and the condo parking lot entrance drive but we got everyone there safely. The arrangement of beds and bedrooms was ideal for 3 families, with the master's large walk-in closet a perfect spot to set up the play & pack for the baby. The huge loft bedroom fit the bill nicely for a family of 5 & the 2 older kids each loved having their own upper bunk. The radiant heated floors were cozy and everyone just left their shoes/boots by the door. The kitchen was well-equipped for cooking for the 9 of us (not counting the baby) with plenty of dishes & utensils. Being able to lock our skis in the closet was also helpful. Once the sun came out we saw the incredible view from the condo and could even watch the ski patrol setting off avalanche charges before the ski area opened. You appreciate their work when you see the flash, the smoke, & the snow flying long before you hear the boom. Kudos to those who make it safe for us to ski. All in all, this is an excellent choice in lodging for a family gathering or a group of friends desiring to ski Taos, providing you arrive with chains and/or 4-wheel drive and good snow or all-terrain tires. We recommend that you buy your groceries, adult beverages, etc. at one of the 3 large supermarkets in town before going up the canyon to the ski area as the ski village is small and without a full-service grocery or family-friendly restaurants. Cellular service is spotty in the valley so it helps to plan ahead for skier pickup points and times as there is no shuttle service to the condo like found at other ski resorts. Having little ones in ski school and expert skiers seeking to end their day at the bottom of the Kachina lift required coordination to ensure that everyone got home.

Owner's Response: Rich- We're so very happy that you had such a good gathering and that it included all of your grandchildren. That is fantastic! We know it can be a bit intimidating when the snow is dumping and you have to drive up to the condo, but luckily the Ski Valley does a good job maintaining that road. It is essential for them to keep it open, now that they own the Bavarian (and depend on its steady revenue). I'm happy you got to see/hear the Ski Patrol blasting the fresh snow. That's my favorite sound up there since it means the skiing will be excellent. We were just there last week and it snowed over 3ft. Needless to say the Patrollers were up before dawn reducing the avalanche risk. What a great way to wake up! Thanks for recommending to other guests that they get their groceries before coming up- that is always a good idea. Bumps Grocery at the ski are base only has the bare necessities, so it's always smart to stock up and limit your trips to/from the condo. We hope you and your friends/family will join us again next winter (or maybe even this summer) for another vacation. Not exactly as described

Good location, nice place. There are few things which I'd like to mention which would of been helpful to us. First this is more of a two bedroom with a loft upstairs which is great for kids but has no bathroom. Second your not located at the bottom of the kachina lift its actually lift 4. Third it is very hard to communicate with the rep for this place, it states contact the owner but it's actually the vrbo rep. And the last thing is they say check in is after 4pm which is way too late for a weekend stay, you lose most of that day.

Owner's Response: Scott- We're happy that you found our location and property to be of the highest quality. That's just the way we want folks to experience it. As for your feedback- you are correct, the very large loft (essentially an entire upstairs living/sleeping area) does not have a bathroom. Believe it or not, we looked at adding a 3rd bathroom for that space, but it wasn't possible given architectural complexities. As I'm sure you found out, it's very easy for those sleeping in the upstairs to access the bathroom in the downstairs hallway. And it sounds like the names of the lifts may have confused you: we are located very close (walking distance) to the base of the "Kachina Lift", which is Lift #4 (The Bavarian Restaurant is co-located with the Lift #4 base). Perhaps you were thinking of the newly installed "Kachina Peak Lift", which can only be accessed by riding Lift 4 and skiing over to it. We do take pride in making your reservation experience easy- we actually don't use any VRBO reps- just us or our close friends handle the reservation process. We'd love to have people check in as early as they wish (wouldn't that be wonderful for all of us when we are traveling!), but like all establishments, we make sure the property is well cleaned after our morning guests check out. I'm sure all our guests will understand and appreciate the time it takes to properly clean and maintain the property during the few hours between morning check-outs and afternoon check-ins. Again, thanks for your feedback- we always welcome it. We hope you'll come back and enjoy yourself this summer or next winter!

Month of Bliss!

Let me start by saying this review might be long! I'll start with the accommodations: they were better than the website could convey. The view from every window is spectacular, and it was more spacious than we'd anticipated. The furnishings were comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked, and sleeping arrangements were more than adequate for all guests. We had various family and friends drop in, and had anywhere from 2 to 7 people there at once. We had teenage girls in the loft area, and adults downstairs.

We wanted to escape the heat, and get a break from our hectic lives, and we picked the perfect place to do so. Summer is an amazing time to visit, and we enjoyed hiking to Williams Lake, and various other areas around the property, grilling dinner on the deck, sipping coffee on the deck, watching movies at night, and spending time together. We went to The Bavarian for lunch and dinner a few times (a short walk from the condo), and basically simply enjoyed the cool weather and scenery.

Food: If you're cooking at the condo, remember he altitude, and know that pasta takes about twice as long to cook (as well as boiling potatoes), and when baking, use a little extra flour. I got most of my groceries at Smith's in Taos, and some specialty items at Cid's. Make a list, and make sure you've got everything before heading to the condo as it's about a 40 minute drive.

Eating out in Taos: breakfast (or lunch) at Taos Diner is a must! Huge portions, reasonable prices, and delicious. Taos Outback Pizza - salads! The house dressing is amazing. Guadalajara Grill is good for Mexican. Taos Cow in Arroyo Seco has great ice cream!

Shopping: if you're going into town to do some shopping or sightseeing in the plaza area, you can park for free off of Camino de la Placita (we never paid for parking). Also, you can find souvenir-type items for sale at the Rio Grande Gorge bridge for better prices than in town. Francesca's in Arroyo Seco is a charming ladies boutique - cute stuff!

Sightseeing: there's so many interesting and beautiful things to see and do in the area. You've got to get the Rio Grande Gorge, you must visit the plaza area, especially the Taos Farmers Market on Saturday mornings in the summer. San Francisco de Asis (church in Ranchos Des Taos) is a must see - put it on your list of photo ops! We also loved Arroyo Seco - charming small town!

We would highly recommend this place, and cherish the memories we made here! Loved it!

June Retreat

Our two families absolutely loved this condo. It was exactly as described by VRBO. The kids 8-10-12 loved the upstairs lift in fact we had to rush home from shopping at ski valley because the kids wanted to hang out in the loft. Hiking: we loved the close proximity to the hiking trails and the streams that flowed near them. The Bavarian restaurant was close but not too close when we didn't want to cook. It was a great getaway and the table was big enough to have the whole family around and some additional family that dropped by. The kitchen had everything including a wine opener. While we didn't need any maintenance it was nice to know he was next door should something happen. This will be our first choice when we return...loved it and thanks for making your home available....

Perfect Spring Break

I joined some old friends at the Alpenglow to ski over spring break and we all had an outstanding time. The condo is spacious, comfortable, and homey. It was a great venue to catch up on old times while we cooked, played games, enjoyed the views, and recovered from the long days of skiing. The skiing itself was great, and the easy walk from the Alpenglow to the lifts was fantastic. We couldn't ask for better convenience. I'll definitely stay here again next winter, and now I want to check it out in the summer too.
