Just a short distance away from the bustle of the Gold Coast, Australia's No 1 holiday destination, is the National Trust island of South Stradbroke. There is limited building on the island, but this includes the Retreat, a 4 bedroom house on its own private sandy beach, with its own jetty, and ready access to the quiet waters of the Broadwater, which separates the island from the mainland. In contrast, just a 2 km walk away, on sandy tracks and through tropical forest, the surf rolls in from the Pacific, along a stretch of 8 km of sandy beach. Most living is done out on the veranda, where there is a barbecue, table and 10 chairs, together with sun loungers. The upper floor of the house is occupied with the magnificent master bedroom, complete with ensuite, dressing room, lounge area, and balcony looking down over the beach and jetty, and down the waterway. The main living room is generously proportioned with dining table and chairs for 8, and relaxation area with TV, DVD etc.

The Gold Coast is the premier holiday destination in Australia, for Australians and for overseas visitors. It is lively throughout the day and most of the night, and possesses an abundance of exquisite world-class cuisines. In addition to the world-famous surfing beaches such as Surfers' Paradise, the hinterland is mainly mountainous picturesque tropical jungle. In between are island breaks sheltering waters where sailing, fishing, para-gliding, etc are enjoyed. Also enjoyed by many are theme parks such as WetnWild, Dream World , Movieworld, Seaworld, and the picturesque and sophisticated city of Brisbane is just a short train ride away. The Retreat is a haven from all of this, located on the Eco-South Stradbroke Island, just off the coast. Access to the island is by water taxi, normally from the Runaway Bay Marina. Cars may be left in the Marina safely, and free of charge. The island is blessed with both a 8 km superb surfing beach in the east, and quieter protected waters.

Notes: South Stradbroke is an 'Eco' island, mainly National Trust. No visitors cars are allowed (nor are they necessary). Some of the fauna (such as the golden wallaby) is unique to the island - no domestic pets allowed! Previous guests have included a wheelchair user (who came back a second time), but there is no ramp. The aluminium dinghy ('tinny', in the vernacular) has an outboard motor; no licence is required to use it. Garage contains 2 kayaks, as well as 2 good quality folding beds. Both of the nearby vacation resorts (Couran Point and Couran Cove) have good quality restaurants, for when you want a change!
