Ko'olau Country Gardens is located in Hau'ula, Hawaii, a small, ancient, fishing village on Oahu's North Shore near the Polynesian Cultural Center, Turtle Bay Resort, Waimea Valley, Sunset Beach, Pipeline, Haleiwa town, Kualoa Ranch, Gunstock Ranch, Hauula Loop Trail, Kokololio Beach, Pounders Beach, Chinaman's Hat (Mokoli'li Island), Byodo Temple, Kahana Bay, Gunstock Ranch, Kualoa Ranch and many other wonderful Oahu attractions.
We are located approximately 45 minutes from Honolulu International Airport. Hau'ula is on the North Eastern coast/Windward side of Oahu, where the Ko'olau Mountains touch the sparkling, blue Pacific Ocean. Our small community of single family homes, small shops, and local-style restaurants (Papa Ole's, Korean BBQ, North Shore Taco's), is very different from the high rise, retail tourist center of Waikiki. With hiking trails (Hauula Loop and Makua Ridge trail) and unspoiled reefs for awesome snorkeling, we offer a glimpse of old Hawaii. We are confident that you will enjoy our Hawaiian-style hales, tropical gardens, fish ponds and remote, peaceful, country location.
Ko'olau Country Gardens has all the amenities, including spectacular ocean and mountain views, spacious lanais, exquisite tropical gardens with tropical fruits...you may enjoy during your stay. We grow fish and taro/luau leaves in our aquaponic gardens. You are welcome to visit the aquaponic gardens during your stay. It is open for guests by appointment.
The private, peaceful location of our Guest Houses offer a sanctuary that is hidden away from other homes and traffic noises. At Ko'olau Country Gardens you can experience the ocean breezes and waves coaxing you to relax and enjoy the magic of this unique, tropical wonderland we call Hawaii.
Ko'olau Country Gardens has two hales (Hibiscus and Koi Pond) available year-round. The Mountain Villa is also available in the summer, June and July. The owners live onsite. We are family-friendly and love sharing our experience of creating sustainable gardens and fish ponds.
Our primary goal is to ensure that your visit to our home and gardens is filled with Aloha...the real magic of Hawaii.
We believe your stay at Ko'olau Country Gardens will be a memorable experience because of the beauty, peace and closeness to nature...a truly unique Hawaiian experience.

Hau'ula is a village with 'real people' ... a truly spiritual place, on the ocean, with the most beautiful, private beaches in Hawaii. Hau'ula is home to many Native Hawaiians and other Polynesians. Ko'olau Country Gardens Guest Houses are located high on the hillside of the Ko'olau Mountains, overlooking the small town of Hau'ula with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. There's not a better location on earth...we love it!
Dotty Kelly purchased this estate in 1993
We chose to live in Hau'ula because of it's people, weather, natural beauty and location...far away from the crowds of Waikiki and Honolulu. The pace is slower, life is more informal and people are good friends and neighbors.
The property is agricultural with many tropical fruit trees and an organic, aquaponic garden. There is plenty of food to eat right on the land. We grow tilapia in a large stone-walled fishpond.
We stayed at the Koi Pond Suite and had a wonderful time. From the nearby beaches to the amenities which were minutes away, it was a great place to be. The kitchen had everything we needed, the suite also came with towels, linens, a cooler, wifi, cable and a washer/dryer. From our morning coffee on the lanai, or a nap on the hammock, it will beckon you back to Oah'u
My two teenage boys and I loved the Koi Pond Suite! It was such a nice relaxing location for our summer vacation and everything was there that we needed; kitchen was stocked (grocery store very close), coolers and beach equipment in the closet, washer/dryer and cable tv. I would not only recommend this location to anyone, but also look forward to staying again in the future.
I had a couple extra nights on Oahu after my meetings, and wanted to get out of Waikiki. Dotty was very responsive and accommodating - and when I had to leave early to beat the Blizzard of 2015 in Boston, she once again accommodated me and provided a refund, where none was technically due. I stayed at the 2 bedroom Hibiscus suite, which was perfect. Full kitchen, washer/dryer (I needed that given how wet I got on my hike that day), and the Lanai is just wonderful. If I stayed any longer, I know I would have spent all my time there. As it was I had some nice reading time there, and a great breakfast overlooking the palm trees and ocean. I really liked what I saw on this side of the island, and just wish I had longer to stay and explore. It was so beautiful. Didn't get to use the beach, which is a short walk away. There is also a very solid hike close by - you can walk to the trailhead from here. Great spot - wish I had longer to stay, which means I will have to come back and stay longer!
We stayed here for 10 nights, it was everything we wanted and needed. We stayed in the Koa ponds which is very, Quiet, clean and kid friendly which is nice. Waking up to the Koa ponds and rosters every morning was simply relaxing. The location is ideal for tourist who want to travel the island. We were happy to be right in the middle and be able to travel to the north shore or Oahu in about 40 minutes. There are beaches less than 5 minutes away! The owners were extremely helpful with anything we needed. I would stay here again on our next visit to the island. The only con is the size of the shower, it's small.
On a "girls'" trip (my first time to Oahu and first time using VRBO), my friend was really focused on beachfront houses - but Dotty & Peter's property ended up being one of our very favorite places of our whole trip! Trust me, *do not skip this beautiful location just because it isn't right on the water*. You are as close to amazing beaches as you'd be anywhere (5 minutes by car), plus the safety and privacy of being just a few minutes (literally) up the hill. The owners are super kind, engaged and on-site; only there if you need them, but so refreshing to know that it wasn't simply a turn-key property; it's well looked after and cared for, as are their guests. This was truly one of our best stays on Oahu, and I'd book it again in a heartbeat. You're up on the hill/mountain side, but I didn't expect such gorgeous ocean views or that we would be just as close to the North Shore's great beaches as we were in other "beachfront" rentals where we had to hop in the car to get to a swimmable beach anyway! We stayed in the Hibiscus Suite which I expected to be small but was in fact very breezy and super-spacious, immaculately clean, with gorgeous terra cotta tile floors, wonderful ceiling fans and a full kitchen, plus two rooms with lovely beds. It was just my friend and I, but it would be wonderful for traveling couples or a family. There's even a washer/dryer! Wow. We didn't use it, but astounding; if I were traveling with a family, that would be a godsend. The screened porch/lanai was huge, beautiful and relaxing; when we arrived, we actually skipped going to more beaches just to stay and read and enjoy the scenery and fresh air. I wasn't initially sure about the location and expected to be far up in the hills away from the ocean, but that's not what this is at all - in 5 minutes, you can be on the most beautiful beaches on the whole island. Dotty and Peter were available if you needed them, friendly, accommodating, and promptly returned our security deposit. Communication was excellent all the way through our rental experience from start to finish (this is my first time renting through VRBO) and I can't wait to bring my husband back to this magical place! Thank you for the beautiful stay and your kindness, Dotty and Peter - I look forward to returning!
Our stay in the Hibiscus Suite was an enjoyable and comfortable one. We especially liked sitting and relaxing on the lanai during the early mornings and evenings! Also, it was a big plus and very convenient for us to be so close to the BYU campus since a big part of our travels to Oahu was to bring our granddaughter there to attend her first year of college. Thank you so much for the comforts of a tropical paradise stay.
