The Church at Ochre Pit Cove is a unique multi-purpose vacation and studio facility located in Conception Bay, Newfoundland. Built in 1938, this former United Church has been thoughtfully renovated to include all the modern amenities while respecting the beauty of the original architecture. With a stunning seventeen-foot ceiling, spacious studio and generous living area, our facility offers an exceptional getaway experience for work or play. An hour and 45 minutes from St. John’s and four minutes from Northern Bay Sands Park, it is a perfect place for your extended family to kick back and relax – over 2500 square feet will give everyone room to breathe.
The Church provides an exceptional opportunity to work without interruption in a clean, spacious and quiet environment. The main studio area features 600 square feet (55 square metres) of new birch hardwood flooring with a 17 foot (5.2m) ceiling and no posts. For presentation there is capacity for a seated audience of 40-100 depending on performance requirements. An ideal venue for a residency, retreat or workshop - no other facility in the province offers this combination of performance space and accommodation under one roof.
Stroll down to the beach and watch the fishing boats come and go at the busy wharf. See whales and icebergs in season off the breathtakingly rugged coast. Discover the endless web of hiking trails through woods and meadows. Build sandcastles at Northern Bay Sands Park. Take a day trip up the coast to see the historic stone walls of Grates Cove. In the evening, sit around the fire and listen to the loons in the distance. Love to entertain? Bring your instruments and enjoy the beautiful acoustics. Love to cook? The large kitchen is stocked with all you need to get you started – condiments, sugar & spice, oil & vinegar, pots and pans. There’s even a fondue set. All you need to bring is your favourite food.

We have a lot of friends who summer out this way and we were looking for a nice little saltbox, but when the Church presented itself, we couldn't refuse. It was clear that it would have to be more than a private residence. It is a building meant to be shared: to be filled with people, conversations, music and creativity. So when we designed the living area we made sure to keep a large portion as open space for meetings or performances. Work or play. Or both. It is a special place indeed.
Some of the best times we've had are with a bunch of families with children. Spend the afternoon at Northern Bay Sands and come back for a glass of wine, a bbq and a bonfire. The kids can bring their friends and use the extra air mattresses and sleeping bags. If they're adventurous, there's a pop-up tent they can set up and camp out. In the morning you can stroll over to the local beach just across the road. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the place is big enough that you're not on top of each other. Find a book from our growing library and settle in for a good read while the kids play DDR, paint a picture, play a board game or watch a movie.
I love the church at Ochre Pit Cove! My partner and I, along with some friends, spent a wonderful weekend out there last summer. The restored church is so beautiful and it feels incredibly special when the sun shines through the stained glass! Also, it is very spacious. Perfect for dance parties! It had everything we needed for cooking and bbq-ing gorgeous meals and many modern comforts to boot. The sandy beach in Northern Bay is a 5 minute drive, but we preferred walking across the street and down to the rocky beach that we had completely to ourselves. Heaven.
We were 6 ladies looking for a place to relax, play bridge, cook good food , eat and enjoy each other's company. As fortune would have it , the weather was perfect...15C and sunny..fall in Newfoundland can be exceptional. So we were able to get in a hike and enjoy the magnificent views over the ocean. Ochre Pit Cove has something to offer for everyone. And the Church at Ochre Pit Cove is unique , from it's stained glass window which changes colour depending on the light, to it's magnificently equipped kitchen which would satisfy the most meticulous foodie..everything one might need to prepare an excellent meal. 5 bedrooms, 3 ensuite , more than met our needs . Hot showers, plenty of water... The place is so big that you never felt you were under each other's feet..plenty of space to be quiet and perhaps read..but a lovely communal kitchen , dining room area when you felt like being social. And, for music, there were CD players with a huge CD selection, plus an Ipod dock, and , if you are musical yourself, a piano and a guitar.
Lots of books lined the bookshelves..you really did not need to come prepared because the owners have thought of everything.
We have booked to go again in early June....can't wait!
Recently we had the pleasure of staying at The Church in Ochre Pit Cove. We had nine (9) family members in total, no kids. With nine adults we had amply space. We put extra leafs in the table and were all able to eat together comfortably. As noted on the website the kitchen is well stocked. There is a BBQ outside which we did use. There are five (5) bedrooms. We used them all. When we arrived everything was extremely clean. A very comfortable stay. The owners were extremely helpful, before and after our trip. I would definitely return and for sure I would recommend this place to friends and family. As we didn't have great weather we did mostly day trips. Remember, get off the beat and track and visit all the Coves. They are breathtaking. Buy some fish from the locals. On our sunny day we took a trip into St. John's (Signal Hill). A must see. One thing I would suggest if you have a large group of people attempt to get your groceries at Costco prior to heading to Ochre Pit Cove.
Comfortable and relaxing. Great selection of books and magazines, if only you had time to read.
It was a great weekend.
10 of us stayed there for the weekend. We enjoyed the facilities and local community. The many bed rooms and bathrooms offered privacy while the open concept floor plan and activity room in the basement gave us lots to do togehter.
I would rate this vacation retreat a 5 STAR for sure, no doubt about it!! It is super clean and has everything you could possibly imagine to make your stay an enjoyable one. It's very clear that these owners have renovated this building with a lot of heart. Whether it's a business stay, family holiday or just a girls getaway there is a relaxing atmosphere within those walls. Loved it. Congratulations Lisa and Paul on a job well done!! We will be back.
What a beautiful place! Not only was the community straight out of a storybook but the property itself was so romantically bohemian it was unbelievable. It had something for everyone, adults, kids and dogs alike. We really appreciated the fact that it was pet friendly. The property was very clean and organized and comes fully stocked with everything you need. The property owners made it so easy to book and were very easy going and quick to respond to our questions. The user guide they send out with a list of kitchen amenities and tourist destinations makes it so easy to plan your meals and vacation activities. Salmon Cove Sands was a great day at a sandy beach but a trip down to the overfalls 5 minutes away in Western Bay is a MUST. We can't wait to go back, we plan on making this a yearly excursion. I would suggest you book early because this amazing spot books up very quickly.
