Relaxing vacation getaway spot

  • 5 of 5
We just returned home after a 5 day stay at this adorable cottage and no one wanted to leave. It was the perfect place to get away and relax. My 5 yr old loved the little beach down the street, which she begged to visit every day. The location was close to everything yet it still felt you were in the woods. The neighborhood was amazingly quiet, which made it easy to relax in the evenings and sleep at night. We definitely will try to visit again next Summer.

Van Huis Cottage

  • 5 of 5
My four children and I stayed for 3 nights in the cottage. The size was perfect and the decor was charming. Very close to the strip in Makinaw city, you can easily walk or ride a bike there. I would definitely recommend to families or couples.

Awesome Cottage!

  • 5 of 5
We love this place! This was our second year staying at the Van Huis Cottage. It's Home! Beautiful location and close to everything! So peaceful and quiet. Very clean, bright and cheery! We stayed in '12 and couldn't wait to book again for this year and counted down the days until we could get back here!

Good location, small, old bedding

  • 3 of 5
My husband and I with our 3 children(youngest 7 year old) chose this house to stay for 3 nights while we toured around the area and visiting Mackinac Island. The house is at a very convenient location, still away from all busy streets. Very close to the beach and tennis courts.
It is a little too crowded for 5 of us. The kitchen is very small but very functional with coffee and coffee make. Plenty plates and silverware to use. We encountered several spiders in the bedroom and living room. I did not call the manager right away since we had a busy schedule. My son did not really rest well because he was worried about spiders.
Inside the house feels very humid since no need to turn on the A/C. Our bedding is clean but you can feel and see that it is extremely worn and old.
The bathroom is very very small. Overall, I think the house is really not suitable for more than 4 people to sleep.

Owner's Response: Tina,
Thank you for your feedback. I was sorry to hear about the spiders! Due to the wooded location, we do get a few spiders from time to time. I only wish you would have contacted us so we could have taken care of it right away. Thank you for the heads up on the set of sheets, they have since been replaced. The cottage is small and designed to sleep 4, which is noted in both our ad and the rental agreement. We do appreciate your feedback as it helps us to continue to improve our properties.

Love and comfort oozes from the walls

  • 5 of 5
Absolutely loved this place! It was conveniently located close to "downtown" but had a kind of secluded feel to it. Although there were neighbors nearby. we felt like we were in our own little Northwoods oasis. There is a small "beach" nearby that you can walk to in about 5 minutes.

The house was extremely clean and inviting. The decorations and colors were so comforting and cheerful! It was well stocked with pretty much anything we needed, and the owners are kind enough to leave laundry detergent for the washer/dryer (such a wonderful convenience!)

My favorite "morning" ritual was sitting at the cozy table next to the huge window overlooking the pines outside, sipping my coffee and eating eggs that I prepared in the well stocked kitchen (on a side note, I noticed there was no spatula or large slotted spoons so I picked some up and left them in the kitchen, ha!).

My furry friend, a golden retriever, was also welcome here. My options were limited because I wanted to bring my four legged companion, and I am so grateful this place was available! My dog is a senior and I wanted her to enjoy some time "up north." From my understanding, each dog has to be approved, but I am sure if you treat the home with care, your dog wouldn't be a problem either!
It is evident that much love was put into rehabbing this place. I definitely plan on staying here again in the future!
