This self-catering holiday rental home is a romantic pied a terre, set in the warm and timeless historic centre of Modica in south eastern Sicily.
The enchanting baroque town of Modica is a UNESCO site and has a lot to offer. It has a lively local atmosphere, boutiques, cafes, bars and restaurants and the true feel of laid-back Mediterranean life.
La Casetta is a renovated 300-year old cottage located on a medieval road in the historic centre of Modica Bassa. It has a full kitchen, dining area, sofa bed for extra guest and bathroom with shower. Access to the upper floor (loft) is by a spiral staircase, where you have a comfortable king-size bed.
The property has reverse cycle air conditioning/heating so is great for stays at any time of year.
While there is no outside terrace, our great value-for-money price will allow you to spend time at any of Modica's pavement cafes and indulge in as much gelati and and aperativi as you like.
Nearby you have supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, boutiques and lots of historic sites to see. Modica is famous for its chocolate; every year the town hosts the Eurochocolate expo, and thousands of chocolate lovers come to enjoy its delicate flavours.
In 2003 UNESCO added the city of Modica and the surrounding area to the World Heritage List for its baroque buildings and architectural design unique to this part of Sicily.
If you do not wish to drive there is plenty to see in Modica and its environs, using public transport. Beaches are 25 minutes away.
If you have a car, Modica is within easy driving distance of Ragusa, Scicli and Noto, three other noted Baroque towns, as well as beaches at Marina di Modica, Donnalucata and Sampieri. Many of these places have been used in the filming of the Montalbano TV series.
Longer day trips can be made to the Greek ruins of Agrigento, the Roman mosaics at Piazza Armerina, and Caltagirone, famous for its painted ceramics.
My boyfriend and I rented this apartment for our summer break and it was perfect. Situated close to the town of Modica, where you are spoilt by the wonderful architecture, cafes and bars, the apartment was very comfortable and thoughtfully kitted out with everything you could need by the owner and offered at a very reasonable price. The hospitality and helpfulness of the owner and the local people was second to none. We would thoroughly recommend this apartment and we hope to come back to Modica - a town which stole our hearts!
We spent 2 wonderful weeks in Modica, enjoying the special Easter festivities, including Vasa Vasa and, a week later, the St. Giorgio festivities, including spectacular fireworks! From Modica we took day trips to Noto, Siracusa, Caltagirone, Ragusa, the castle of Donnafugata, and the beaches from Marina di Ragusa to Punta Secca, including the beach home of "Commissario Montalbano." We enjoyed the local shopping for fresh meats, cheeses & produce, but also enjoyed dining out at a lovely restaurant (ask Katharine), called something like "A Puntia Ro Vinu," for Sicilian specialties at very reasonable prices. The house is small, but very efficient & comfortable. Neighbors were friendly. We hope to return for another visit soon!
We have just spent an idyllic two weeks in beautiful Modica staying at La Casetta. Perfectly situated, just under a casual ten minute walk from the town centre, La Casetta is ideal for a couple and is very clean, compact and practical. Giorgio, the owner, is extremely helpful and took great pride in looking after us and introducing us to the best local restaurants, sights and experiences including a visit to a local farm where we samples freshly made ricotta. Modica itself is a myriad of beautiful baroque style buildings, it was a pleasure to wander through the streets which are build up on either side of the main thouroughfare of the town. Eating and drinking in all the local restaurants proved to be very inexpensive. Public Transport was fine, buses kept to timetable although were few and far between - especially on a Sunday. If you want to explore the whole area fully, car hire would have to be recommended. Sampieri and Marina di Modica are two beaches about half an hour away by bus. We visited Siracuse for the day which was a beautiful and historical treat (much more "touristy" though, and therefore slightly more pricey to eat out.) Would 100% recommend a stay at La Casetta, Giorgio and his wife Antonella are efintiely superb hosts and make Modica a perfect location for a relaxing and blissful holiday.
Choosing La Casetta to discover both the beautiful Baroque City of Modica and the South of Sicily was really an excellent decision. This holiday home is ideal for any couple or a family with one or two children to discover the real tastes, views and Sicilian life. Very very close to the centre of the town. Giorgio and his family are always available and really helpful. Excellent restaurants, pizzerias and of course Sicilian sweets, especially the fat-free chocolate of Modica. I do highly recommend it and will return.
a very pleasant stay in modica thanks to a outgoing, friendly and helpful Giorgio, the appartment was very convenient and perfect for the proximity to modica's highlights would recommend it to other fellow travellers.thank you
I rented 'la casetta' last summer to use as a base to explore the southeastern part of Sicily and ended up falling in love with Modica - in the end, my partner and I decided to buy a vacation property in the historic centre, not far from Giorgio's charming house! Modica is a gem of a town, appealing to foodies and architectural buffs alike (check out Saveur magazine's March edition with a very interesting article on Ragusa and surrounding area). La casetta is very well-situated, close to grocery stores, a fabulous butcher store and a 5-10 minute walk to the Saturday organic food market in the town's main piazza. Getting around without a car was never a problem - trains and buses have frequent service to the many nearby towns and beautiful beaches of Sampieri and Marina di Modica. At the end of every day, we were happy to return to la casetta to make dinner or relax before going out to the many excellent wine bars and restaurants/pizzerias. One of our favourite places to eat was at La Contea pizzeria's outdoor tables on charming Via Grimaldi, followed by Sunday night jazz just down the street at Hemingway's. Modica is a very lively town and, in my opinion, an excellent base for exploring everything the southeast has to offer. Giorgio was an excellent and attentive host and his house is very clean, well-equiped and well-maintained. The price is excellent and I enjoyed my experience so much that I'm returning to la casetta this spring....(while the renovation work on our own house is taking place!)
