Big Pine Key House Rental Photos and Description

A Charming 2/2 on a canal with Open Water Views - Calming and Comfortable

“If you surrender completely to the moments as they pass, you live more richly those moments.” – Anne Morrow Lindbergh

A Gift from the Sea is a charming well-designed, ground level home comfortable for 4-6 guests. The décor and wall colors were selected to be soothing after a long day enjoying all there is to do on the water or playing tourist.

Your vacation home is three lots in from the open water on a crystal-clear canal that’s perfect for swimming or just watching as you sit on the back porch with a good book.

The galley style kitchen is well equipped for preparing the catch of the day or admiring on your way out the door as you enjoy a meal in one of the local’s spots within a short drive or walk.

The den and dining room encompass one large space that's perfect for watching cable on the flat panel televison or just relaxing. From the sectional sofa you can watch the ever-changing sunsets the keys are famous for.

The bedrooms and baths are discussed below.

Key West only 29 miles - Marathon 18 miles

From our guest book: On January 30, 2009 the New York Times had an interesting article abut kayaking in the Lower Florida Keys.

My wife and I booked a week vacation stay at 'A Gift From the Sea' vacation rental. We had a wonderful time. Everything you could possibly need was supplied at the rental. The only thing you'll need are groceries which you can get about a mile up the street. The owners have done a great job setting up the home to be your home away from home. Located in the lower Keys your a short drive to Key West (approximately 1/2 hour) snorkling, diving, fishing, historical museums, the aquarium, sand beaches at Bahai Honda State Park, whatever you choose. Directly across the street from the home is Capt. Bill Rabito who's been guide fishing the Keys for nearly 45 years I highly recommend booking a charter with him.

From our guest book: We wanted a laid back, relaxing time and this was the right place. We did spend a day in Key West.

We liked Square Grouper and Annettes. We went to both twice. Our special treat was going to Little Palm Island Resort - Excellent dinner! We saw several pretty sunsets while we enjoyed a 'Happy Hour' before going out to dinner. We did enjoy our time at A Gift from the Sea. The house is attractive and nicely furnished. Like the front door and new TVs. The walks and driveway are nice addititions. We are snowbirds, spending our summers on a real Island - Kelly's Island on Lake Erie (Ohio). You've done a good job. Roger and Madeline W.

Big Pine Restaurant - big selection, plenty to eat. Fanci Seafood has an excellent selection.

People were friendly and the weather awesome.

The home is very clean and location is perfect! We enjoyed our time on Big Pine Key.

A thank you to Lynne and Alan for a magnificent and eventful week. Nice job on the home – all that we needed, except more time. I’m sad to leave.

Sitting and eating at the little table on the porch was a definite favorite.

Great location, peaceful, on a clean canal.

  • 5 of 5
This is a comfortable, sensible 60's style ranch, in a peaceful residential area, on a canal. It's a minute and a half from highway 1, 10 min. from Bahia Honda State Park and 40 min. from downtown Key West. The owners are very friendly, helpful and easy to get a hold of. It is well stocked and has a washer and dryer. The canal is great for a refreshing swim and since the house sits at the mouth of the canal, the water is constantly refreshed as the waves wash in from the bay. The odd jelly fish may wander in (though we saw only four in a week's time), so scan the water before jumping in. Snorkeling in the canal revealed a few fish species among which were parrot fish. The back yard is a bit spartan, but offers a very useful dock to put in paddle boards (rented from paddleboardthekeys for the week--would recommend) or rented kayaks, and head for a paddle on the bay--where we spotted some rays and a hammerhead shark nursery in the mangrove! Don't worry, moms soon abandon their pups after birth and return to the deep ocean :). It was nice for the kids to have something to do at the house in between outings. You will see lovely sunsets from the front of the house. Big Pine Key is a reserve for the miniature Key deer, which are everywhere, and consequently the undeveloped area also attracts a variety of birds. Bahia Honda has the best beaches around for swimming, walking or just lounging. The Winn-Dixie supermarket is five minutes away, very handy. In close proximity, The Square Grouper restaurant offered the most interesting menu, we thought, but it'll run you about $30 per full size person. To buy fresh seafood to cook at home, Fanci Seafood on Cudjoe Key served us well. The Wharf restaurant on Summerland has a seafood counter inside as well. We rented jetskis out of Summerland Key from Florida Jet Ski Rentals (Nicky and Tony), great people, very friendly and professional. But the cherry on top was that, while we were out with the jetskis, they spotted a manatee at the dock (3rd sighting in as many years!) and they kept it around for us to see upon our return by giving it freshwater from the hose! :) Awesome vacation.

Wonderful, relaxing rental house in great location

  • 5 of 5
My husband, our 12 and 14 yr old kids, and I spent Spring Break at a Gift From the Sea and enjoyed it thoroughly. The house is simple, but tasteful, very clean, relaxing, and well-appointed. It's on a canal quite close to the ocean so the water is crystal clear. We swam in the canal several times. The house is not on stilts like the others in the area, so it's easy to bring in suitcases and groceries. It would be ideal for anyone who has trouble with stairs. There is a lovely screened in porch that we enjoyed relaxing in with a good book and cup of coffee. The living and dining rooms are open and spacious, with comfortable furniture. The kitchen has quality cookware, utensils and appliances. The bedrooms were sizable, with large walk-in closets, comfortable beds, ceiling fans, and nice bathrooms. There is AC, which allows for more restful sleep. The neighborhood is peaceful, safe and picturesque, with key deer roaming around at dusk, a wide variety of tropical water birds, and an occasional bright green iguana scampering across a lawn. There are lots of trails around for running and long walks. Big Pine is the perfect place for nature lovers and those who enjoy the more laid-back aspects of the keys. The star-gazing is awesome on Big Pine. While it is not overly developed there are large grocery and drug stores nearby, and it's about a half hour drive to Key West if you're looking for more excitement. It's very close to Bahia Honda State Park, which has some of the Keys' best beaches. We have rented many vacation homes in several countries over the years. This one was one of the best, especially considering its reasonable price. The owners are very amiable, responsive and easy to work with. We hope to rent it again in the future.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the wonderful review of A Gift from the Sea – Big Pine Key. It’s not a rare gift to love Big Pine Key and the Florida Keys. And we have had wonderful guests over the years who love and appreciate A Gift from the Sea’s simplicity. We lived in the Keys 25+ years and we even used a paint color on the interior that sooths the eyes after a long day on the pristine waters of the Florida Keys.

What is rare, and special, is to be able to capture these emotions and understandings with words.

We are grateful your family came to A Gift from the Sea. We will long remember your kind words.

Thank you.

This is our third visit, and we plan to return as many times as possible. The location is perfect for us. Beautiful views from from the breakfast table and the kitchen, gorgeous sunsets, bright bougainvillea in front of well maintained homes on Independence Ave. WiFi is receivable in the entire house, and flat screen TV with multiple channels in living room and bedroom.

The residence provides all the essentials for a homelike place to return to after a day of enjoyment in the lower keys.

Absolutely loved everything about it! The house was very comfortable, clean and well maintained. The overall location was perfect for everything we wanted to do. Fishing, lobstering and boating. The location was close and convenient for shopping, dining , lots of dive shops, grocery stores and anything else you might need. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone who wants a nice and relaxing vacation. All the conveniences of home. And the owners was always so helpful and nice. Thanks! Alan and Lynne! You will definitely be hearing from us again!

Clean, Comfortable - Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5
The 'Gift from the Sea' home is so clean, and we had everything we needed to enjoy ourselves. I felt like we were staying with friends, but my husband felt like he was at home. You can't ask for more than that! It was quiet and peaceful, and so convenient to snorkeling and shops and we loved having a swim right in the back canal. We would recommend this house to our friends, and of course to ourselves for our next stay in the Keys. The only down side to mention is that there is very little shade in the yard, but that didn't stop us from hanging out under the palm tree and reading a book, and taking a nap.

Notes:
A Gift from the Sea is a non-smoking home. Most of the homes in the Keys are two story with living area upstairs. Ours is a ground level home with a carport. If you have vacationed in the Keys you know how many stairs there are when carrying in the groceries. The house is tiled throughout and has a paved walkway down to the swim ladder. There are three televisions, two with DVD's. A small library for rainy days and lots of comfortable places to sit and lots of games. Free long distance phone service for the main land U.S. and Canada We have a portacrib available. The kitchen is fully stocked with major and minor appliances and all the utensils you need, from cookie sheets to a lobster pot. Located near the end of the street, close to open water, the house is quiet. The seawall is 75 feet long and quite a protected place to dock a boat and there is easy deep water access.
