CHARMING APARTMENT WITH ROOF TERRACE, PLACE CARNOT, CARCASSONNE

Carcassonne City Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Overlooking the market square, beautifully furnished, perfect for long weekends

This romantic apartment is in the heart of Carcassonne's La Bastide, the old town. Only 10 minutes by bus from the airport and 5 minutes walk from the railway station you could not ask for a more perfect and convenient location in Carcassonne. Not only is the apartment in a quiet, privately owned town house dating from 1713 but it is on the top floor with a wonderful view across the Market Square of Place Carnot, Carcassonne's most famous market and the location for the weekend market and winter fairs. It also has use of a large roof terrace which in the summer gives unrivalled views of La Cite, the medieval castle and for the magnificent and world famous fireworks of 14th July. It is perfect for an alfresco breakfast or sunning yourself during the day or simply relaxing in the evening with a glass of chilled Champagne as the sun sets over the mountains in the distance. The flat has been completely restored in 2008 and now is a delightfully relaxing and romantic place to stay.

Carcassonne Cite: Carcassonne is has one of the most beautiful fairy tale castles to be found anywhere in the world. It is the cultural and historical capital of the Aude region sitting upon the Aude river and crossed by the breathtakingly beautiful Canal du Midi.

During the summer it is host to innumerable festivals, and has the largest and most spectacular firework display in France on the 14th of July. Even in low season and winter there is plenty to do with the winter markets, truffle and duck fairs and antique fairs. The Carcassonne Festival takes place throughout July with many of the events taking place in Place Carnot.

Cathar Country: The region around Carcassonne is world famous for the Cathar history, and for the many castles that were built from the 12th to the 14th century. Many of these have survived and worth visiting especially for anyone interested in the legend and myths of the Holy Grail. Within an hour you can be walking or skiing in the mountains of the Arriege, and within two hours in the Pyrenees. The number of places to visit in one week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone for a week.

Eating and Drinking: Carcassonne sits on the edge of the Langedoc wine region and is literally surrounded by vineyards and wineries. We can organise wine tasting tours for our guests and advise you on local restaurants and local specialities. The apartment has a library of guide books.

Pipa and Alex have lived in France for 10 years. With backgrounds in hospitality and wines it was only natural that we wanted to share our love of France and the Aude with our guests. We have recently opened a wine shop and tasting room in Carcassonne a few doors from the apartment which serves as a unique meeting place for guests, locals and visitors to Carcassonne.

Alex and Pipa Francis purchased this apartment in 2009

We chose this property as it was as central to Carcassonne as possible. In the winter it overlooks the ice-rink and Christmas fair and the summer it is buzzing with the sounds and character of a truly French provincial town. The design of the flat means the bedroom is away from the square and very quiet, while the roof terrace gives unrivalled views across to the medieval castle.

The sense of stepping back a few centuries into a delightful town house with the right balance of modern and ancient. It is romantic and comfortable with large well proportioned rooms.

We had a wonderful time at this apartment and in Carcassone itself. This was our first time in France but hopefully not the last! Superb, clean apartment with amazing views from the rooftop terrace of all around Carcassonne. Alex & Pipa were extremely friendly and helpful and were just a phone call away if needed. The apartment had everything we needed and was an ideal size for a small family and within easy walking distance of all attractions and amenities. Obviously La Cite is well worth a visit as is the boat trip on the Canal du Midi. The area where the train station and Canal du Midi are is quite pretty and there are nice walks along either side of the Canal with beautiful views of La Cite. Restaurants can be slightly expensive but this is France! Although there are meals to suit every budget and wine is fairly cheap. There are excellent bakeries close by which we visited.
Lac de la Cavayere is well worth a visit and the stunning walk takes you all around both lakes (not many people seem to know about the 2nd lake behind) which is just as pretty, and had stunning views.
Thank you Alex and Pipa

A lovely apartment and a great location. The apartment itself was well presented, spotlessly clean and well maintained. The 3 flights of stairs keep you fit and the roof terrace gives wonderful views of The Cite and rooftops of Carcassonne although the terrace looked decidedly unloved whilst we were there. Kitchen equipment and crockery were limited. Although the apartment was listed as having wifi it did not which was a problem as I needed it for my work. The owners did give us their wifi address for their local shop but obviously this was not an ideal arrangement.
Overall we would recommend this apartment for people who are fit, don't require internet access and are not looking to cook up a storm.
The Cite is amazing and we had a wonderful lunch at Michelin 2 starred restaurant Le Parc for only 35euros including wine! We can also recommend Le Moulin at nearby Trebes - we had an excellent cassoulet whilst watching the barges on the Canal du Midi rise and fall in the locks directly in front of the restaurant.

We had a very comfortable three nights in this well appointed apartment located above the wine shop in the Bastde quarter of Carcasonne.
The location couldn't have been better - a one-minute walk to the main square for cafes, bars and market and an easy ten-minute stroll to the medieval Cité (and a twenty-minute walk to Franck Putelat's two Michelin starred restaurant Le Parc - a definite must for lunch!).
Alex and Pipa's apartments came highly recommended to us by friends who've stayed there and we shall definitely be highly recommending them too!

Ideal for our needs

We chose this apartment because of its central location in the town and because it offered us the chance to fully unwind, yet see the sights all within walking distance of the apartment, choosing not to hire a car for the two week holiday. The description of the property was spot on- we loved it- all nicely furnished, decorated and clean. Very very comfy bed (new and good Ikea mattress).

The negative points- subject to your own standards (we were ok with these points)- would be the pigeons roosting on the next door building and one nesting in window box (all a bit noisy first thing); the very occasional Ryan Air jet coming in to land directly overhead (caught us by surprise at first, but we found it amusing after that, certainly from the roof terrace!); Festival concert stage in the immediate square at this time of year- noisy but fun. Thankfully, a lightning storm cut the Friday concert short so we could hear the Olympic opening ceremony on TV. Refurbishment work on the downstairs flat and adjoining building was going on, but this is town centre and old buildings- there's going to be noise now and again. It's character. The access stairs are steep and fairly unrelenting- we are athletic and found the stairs to be a training opportunity- less able bodied people might stop for a breather.

The roof terrace is a definite plus point, allowing meals and drinks on the roof, secluded sun bathing, and breath-taking 360 degree views. The roof terrace is bigger than the photo suggests on this website.

Being right in the centre of town, it is no distance to the shops and markets, train station, canal, river or the Cite itself. Public transport is accessible and for local bus journeys currently 1euro- a trip out to Cavayere lake is easy- good for lake swimming, forest walks, sun bathing, Go Ape style tree top adventure thing.

All in all, we loved the apartment, the town and the area. Totally chilled holiday, not wishing to come home, and big satisfied smiles all round. We can't recommend this apartment enough, although we'd suggest definitely not for children (1 bedroom anyway) or the less able bodied. The owners were lovely, helpful and accommodating- thanks Alex and Pipa.

Lovely flat in Caracssonne

Arrived at flat to find a very well decorated and furnished place. Bright and airy, nice furniture and decently equiped kitchen. Plenty big enough for 2 people, we knew there were 3 flights of stairs to be prepared! Flat is close to all amenities, only 20 minutes walk to medieval city, 5 minutes to rail station, supermarket, boulangerie, cafe, restaurants 1 minute!

My only gripe would be lack of internet, feel nowadays it should be standard for the quality holiday rental, Macdonalds is not a nice place to spend surfing the net!!

We hired a car for the week and parked it along the canal as car parks full or expensive. Would definitely recommend this flat.
Owner's Response: Dear Susanna, thank you for your review. There is actually a lot of free wifi in Carcassonne especially around Place Carnot which is the reason we don't have it in this apartment but we note the comment. The three secure underground car parks offer a weekly rate which is €25.00 per week with 24 hour access and there is always space in Gambetta or Andre Chenier. Parking in the public car parks above ground can be expensive and they have a time restriction which is why we recommend the underground ones.

The property is located just off Place Carnot, the traditional market square of Carcassonne in the medieval heart of the fortified old town, the Bastide. For visitors to the town a car is not required but is recommended for anyone wanting to visit the region in full. For drivers there is long term secure parking close by. Here you can find a paradise of street cafes, excellent value restaurants and Michelin starred restaurants as well as markets and shops galore. For history lovers and readers of Labarynth there are Castles, and Cathars, for gastranomes local wines and food and for nature lovers some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in the South of France.

Notes:
The flat is located on the third floor of an elegant and classic 18th century period building in the centre of Carcassonne Bastide, just by Place Carnot, the main town square. It is a quiet location in a private building. The sitting room / dinning room and kitchen face South East and are very sunny, while the large bedroom is at the back of the apartment and is quiet and cool in the summer and snug and warm in the winter. As the apartment is on the third floor and has access to a roof terrace it is not suited for the elderly or infirm nor those with very small chidren. The sitting room has a large sofa which is also a sofa bed, two arm chairs and a dinning room table with four chairs. The floor is traditional terracota tiles with carpets. There is flat screen TV and DVD player and a small library of DVDs and English books. The large roof terrace is accessable by an outside staircase. It has commanding views over Carcassonne and the Castle and towards the mountains.
