ROMANTIC HOLIDAY COTTAGE - FOREST OF DEAN

Yorkley Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Relaxing holiday cottage in the Forest of Dean, sleeps 4

The Old Chapel is situated a few metres from extensive woodland in the Royal Forest of Dean. It is the 3rd of 4 properties up a forest track on the edge of the village of Yorkley (approx 1,200 inhabitants). The lounge overlooks a beautiful forest setting.

The open-plan lounge/dining area measures 31' x 16' and has high pine-panelled ceilings. It has a wood burner stove (plus oil central heating), original wood flooring, extensive pine panelling, a Gothic chandelier and many homely features. There is a 42' flat-screen TV with freeview, and a DVD recorder. It is very well stocked with everything you may need on your holiday.

The bedroom on the ground floor is situated off the lounge and is mainly in sage green/pine panelling.

A pine staircase off the dining area takes you up to the second (galleried) bedroom which overlooks the lounge. The ceilings here are high with pine timber beams and lots of pine ballastrading.

The kitchen has all mod. cons

The bathroom has a walk-in shower, bath, bidet and wash-hand basin.

I am older than I feel comfortable with. I currently live near Heathrow but was brought up in the Forest and left there aged 18. For the last 40-odd years we have visited the Forest every 3 weeks visiting friends and family.

We bought the cottage because we loved its location. There are lovely woodland views from the lounge. We can also walk straight into the forest from the cottage.

We find it so relaxing here. Hope you do too!

Mrs Doreen Kingston purchased this cottage in 2008

We loved its location. We first visited it in May 2008 when the forest is at its best. The cottage is very rusty and has high ceilings which we love as the cottage feels bigger than it is. We love the character of the cottage.

We wanted to buy a cottage with a forest view and this one ticked all our boxes.

I stayed in The Old Chapel for a week in September -- and all I have to say is, if you're on my side of the Pond (or any side, really) and are wondering whether this cottage is worth a trip all by itself (never mind the wonderful Forest of Dean!), I have a one-word response: "Yes!"

The Old Chapel is beautifully restored and decorated. Every day, I discovered another delight -- the juxtaposition of wood and stone; the lighting (!!), the books, the marbled bathroom, the oh-so-comfy beds, and, my personal favorite: the draperies!

I would sound over-the-top if I could truly express how amazing the owner, Doreen, was during all of my pre-stay queries. I have rented private homes through homeaway.com for nearly two decades now, and I can honestly say that I have NEVER had a more gracious and helpful "host."

The area is terrific (go to Puzzelwood, Symonds Yat and Goodrich Castle) -- I could have spent another week just walking in the Forest right outside the [splendid] front French doors! But bottom line: if you're thinking about whether this cottage would measure up to your expectations, please be assured -- from someone who flew 8 hours just to stay there -- that your expectations will likely be surpassed.

V. well equipped cottage in excellent location

  • 5 of 5
This was a lovely, very well equipped cottage on the edge of the Forest of Dean. The cottage itself had everything you needed and had been thoughtfully planned right down to books, DVDs and games for all ages including children (great for those rainy days!). The location was fantastic. Being on the edge of the Forest meant that all Forest activities (and there are loads) were within aprox 30 mins drive - fantastic with small children.
We had great communication with the owner from the first contact, and the information pack in the cottage was extremely comprehensive - the best we have ever encountered.
All in all we had a wonderful holiday despite the rather rainy British summer!

What a Fantastic Break

  • 5 of 5
A perfect break in the forest of dean escaping the hustle and bustle of city life. Perfect setting for 2 or 4 the stone cottage is set right next door to the forest walking paths.

A quick shop at Marks and Sparks in Glous and we were set for the weekend. The fire was a blaze for most of our fantastic stay in this undisturbed tranquil setting. A new kitchen and perfect welcoming touches of chocolates, coffee and heating set us off to a great start.

Romantic marked walks across the forest a stone throw away, locals friendly and inviting. A great guide 'in house' to local food and eateries.

The only downside would be you booking the cottage when we would like to go ! - Recommended without hesitation from a true accommodation snob.

The Old Chapel

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I recently had the good fortune in staying at the Old Chapel, for a weeks break in the Forest of Dean, Prior to going, and when ever we decide to search for a holiday let to rent, we always look for a property with bags of character and in great locations, I have to say, that the Old Chapel certainly met this criteria 100%.
All communications with the owners were first class and any queries were quickly answered, and booking details precise and to the point, nothing was too much trouble for them.
The Chapel itself, is an amazing and stunning property, with all the facilites you would expect, and a lot more besides, and just yards away from the forest. The owners really have thought of everything to ensure your stay is as relaxing as possible, and in my opinion, as well as the Chapel being a character property, it also felt like a home from home, but with a wow factor.
The forest was a delight to take long walks in, and the local sceanery was stunning,
To sum up our stay at the Old Chapel in one word - perfect....
For anyone considering a visit to the Forest of Dean or surrounding counties, and looking for a fantastic place to stay, then I would highly reccomend the Old Chapel.

The Royal Forest of Dean is a beautiful and unique area of south-west England with a magical and mysterious quality to it. There are 27,000 acres of woodland and its cycle paths have recently been voted the best in Britain. The area was once a royal hunting ground for Norman kings. J K Rowling grew up in the Forest and gained much of her inspiration for the Harry Potter adventures from the Forest's enchanting and mystical atmosphere. It also inspired Tolkien.

The area is perfect for walkers, birdwatchers, horse-riders, cyclists and moutain bikers with designated areas for all. Tourist attractions include Puzzlewood, Go-Ape, Offasdyke Walk, Clearwell Caves, Shambles Victorian Village, Dick Whittington Farm Park, Taurus Crafts, Dean Heritage Centre, Symmonds Yat, Tintern Abbey, Nagshead Nature Reserve and the National Birds of Prey Centre. Golf courses include Forest Hills, St Pierre and Celtic Manor. Just 20 mins by car from the beautiful Wye Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Other Activities: Great for cyclists (including mountain biking), walking, birding etc.

Golf: There is a golf course (Forest Hills) just a 10 minute drive away. Also a 40 minute drive will take you to the St Pierre Golf Course, well renowned as a venue for the Ryder Cup.

Notes:
The property is well-suited for people who like activity holidays, walk, bird-watch, cycle and are lovers of the countryside. We have furnished the property in such a way that it feels homely, relaxing, a 'get away from it all retreat'. It is situated on the edge of a village of approx 400 people, but up a small lane, so from the lounge you can almost feel on your own. There is a 42' flat screen TV with Freeview in the lounge, with three comfortable settees. We have paid great attention to lighting to create a warm and romantic atmosphere. There is a wood burner in the lounge which has very high pine-clad ceilings. There is a small courtyard garden with 4 sun recliners and a table and 6 chairs for dining. We are into candles and these give the cottage a wonderful feel at night. We absolutely love this property, and hope that you will to! Cannot think of a nicer place to chill out and recharge batteries.
