Your Hosts @ ASCOT GARDENS - Barry and Lesley Edkins,
8 Eksteen Avenue, Bergvliet
Born in the Baby Boomer decade (post 2nd World War) both hosts are originally from Johannesburg where they completed their schooling.
A shipboard romance on the Cape Town Castle when sailing from Cape Town to England in 1967 led to the couple marrying in 1969 and settling down first in Durban until 1972 and from where they then spent 5 years in Zimbabwe, living in both Bulawayo and Harare.
Since the closure of Barrys clothing factory in October 2005, Barry has been marketing and managing ASCOT GARDENS.
At ASCOT GARDENS, Barry is responsible for marketing, reservations, payments and maintenance;and for ensuring that the money trees continually bear fruit which then enables Lesley to present our guests with immaculate and stunning gardens throughout the year, and accommodation considered the best value for money self catering accommodation in the Constantia Valley
We live on the property in our own private corner house and from there manage the 1 acre property consisting of the ASCOT GARDENS SELF CATERING garden suites .
Ascot Gardens often has open days to show off our lovely gardens , and the money raised is donated to worthy charity.
BARRY EDKINS purchased this cottage in 1996
Barry’s work in the Clothing Industry led to a move from Zimbabwe to Cape Town in 1977 and the purchase of the original ASCOT HOUSE, 6 EKSTEEN AVENUE, BERGVLIET in 1979.
In 1996, when their 3 children Grant, Scott and Angie finally left home, Ascot House was subdivided into 3 separate private self catering suites and the ASCOT GARDENS self catering venture was born.
In 2001, a property at the back of Ascot House was purchased and rebuilt and opened for guests in December 2001 as ASCOT LODGE, 17 JEFFCOAT AVENUE, also offering 3 private self catering suites.
NOVEMBER 2004 marked the opening of another adjoining property ASCOT VILLA, 30 HIDDINGH ROAD, a luxury house/villa that sleeps 11 or can be utilized as 3 separate private self catering suites.
ASCOT MEWS, 28 HIDDINGH ROAD, was opened to guests in July 2005. Conversion of single house to 3 private self catering suites was completed and offers guests s/c accommodation for up to 10 guests.
In July 2013 units were refurnished and new fully equipped kitchens provided for JACK, QUEEN AND POOLSIDE SUITES
Barry is a keen golfer, and also a partner with son Scott, in Ascot Tours specializing in Golf Tours, hotel accommodation, safaris, car hire and travel throughout Southern Africa.
Barry enjoys drinking good red wine, and his occasional over indulgence has often spoilt a good Thai or fish barbeque meal that he has prepared for his invited friends or ASCOT GARDENS guests.
Lesley is a workaholic and when she is not working personally in the garden, oversees Michael, the gardener, Mary the maid, Albert the maintenance man, she does some house keeping.
Barry can advise and pass on local information of where to shop and visit attractions. He can recommend good value local restaurants, and provide daily weather predictions
Lesley is always willing to assist fellow gardeners with advice.
as well as being able to name every one of her gardens hundreds of plants, shrubs and flowers to her Ascot Gardens guests and visitors.
Now a grandmother for the sixth time, one wonders how Lesley manages to cope, but she does, especially when she kicks Barry's butt out of bed in the morning and gets him to help her with her many responsibilities!
We were looking for a place south of Cape Town for our base for touring around the Peninsula for a beginning of our African experience and we picked the Ascot Gardens. We stayed 2 nights and we loved it. It's 2 min from shopping centre, 20 minutes driving for city centre (30 min rush hours), Muizenberg Beach, Constantia and have a good road connection towards other spots like Chapman's Peak Drive, Simon's Town, Cape Point.
The place itself save, quite and you can park the car behind the gate. There few restaurants nearby too. Apartments are clean and well equipped; nice bathroom, full kitchen (so you can save few quid by buying a roasted chicken or ready made meals in a shop), overall great value for money.
In the previous reviews I came across some negative comments regardless additional payment required for central heating -for us despite it was early spring with max temp in late teens and chilly morning and nights but we were not cold without central heating. We used hot water bottles to warm up bed before go to sleep and we were fine till morning.
Barry is very helpful.
We should come a day or 2 earlier and stay longer there longer.
I am in love with the Constantia Valley and wanted to really experience the quaintness of this really majestic location. Ascot Gardens made it that much more special. If you like the homely, quaint farm feel in the heart of the beautiful Southern Suburbs then you will love this place. And dont forget the mountains…
We were due to arrive at 18:30 but ended up being late due to car rental issues and was still greeted with warmth and friendliness.
I love exploring and this was the perfect location with quick access to pretty much anywhere in Cape Town. We managed to zip here there and everywhere in 3 days and see a lot of different things.
Thank you to Ascot Gardens for making it such a stress-free, hospitable visit – even though it was short we were still treated like patrons who came to spend 2 weeks.
Keep up the good work!
Our stay at Ascot Gardens was wonderful. The accommodation were beyound our expecatations, We had the Royal suite. A remarkable place in itself. The accommodation is located a short walk to a mall containing two super markets and bistros. We also ate across the square ,excellent food and service. We realy loved our stay, the aroma of the gardens when you open the windows was breathtaking. The location of the gardens allowed for visiting THE CAPE, wineries, tabletop mountain, and of course CAPE TOWN. All sites were close and accessible. My son in law is a golf pro here in the states and he wanted me to take a look and my report is outstanding golf is available. In my opinion this place is 5 star. Sincerely Robert and Roxanne Schuchman
We are family party of 13 and stayed in the Cottage, King, Fountain and Poolside apartments in January 2012. We were well received by Barry, who was very accommodating and helpful on arrival. The whole complex was, and felt, very secure and the general area was quite safe to walk around. The apartments were all very clean and well appointed with large airy rooms and the gardens and other areas were extremely well stocked and well looked after. The Pool was central to all our apartments and easily accessible and we all loved it especially the grandchildren who were at times a little too noisy for some. (Sorry) On the last day we were afforded some extra time for departure, which was very useful with 4 grandchildren but perhaps the planned departure time (for our party at least) was a little early at 10.00 am.
There were quite a few good restaurants in the local area and we were given discount tickets for a number of these, courtesy of Barry. There is so much to do in Cape Town that I don't have time to list it all and most attractions are within easy reach with a shortish drive. There is a mass of tourist information on site at Ascot Gardens and the wireless broadband is an added bonus. All in all it was a fantastic holiday and we would be very happy to return at some stage in the future.
Over the latter part of 2011 my wife and I have used Ascot Gardens as a Cape Town base on a number of occasions for stays of 4 nights at a time. We have occupied a number of the units and they are always well prepared and spotlessly clean on our arrival. We find them well equipped for self catering and the beds comfortable. The gardens are lush and very well cared for. The secure off-street parking is on the site and convenient. Bookings are efficiently arranged by Barry and he has gone out of his way to accommodate us. Restaurants and convenience shopping are close by. We are pleased to have all of this at a very reasonable price.
We spent 9 nights in Ascot Gardens and we had a great time overthere. We slept in the Queen, a very nice self catering house with a fully equipped kitchen, separated bathroom and bedroom. A nice terrace with braai. I almost forget the free WIFI and the room with all the information about the surroundings, all free. All the houses are situated in Lesley's beautiful garden with plenty of flower and a pool. And you can park safely at the premisess. Ascot Gardens is situated close to many highlights (<30 min by car) like downtown Cape Town, airport, Constantatia Wineyard, TableMountain, Cape of Good Hope, Houtbay, Tokai Forest (hiking!) and so on. It takes just a 5 minutes walk to the shopping center with 2 groceries (Checkers and Woolworth) and many other shops and 2 nice restaurants like a Thai. Also very close you can find a nice steakhouse. We can really recommend this quiet and beautiful place.
