The Mont Blanc mountain range is a World Heritage site .... Its dramatic scenery, with Mont Blanc itself, the famous Chamonix needles and the huge glaciers descending into the Chamonix Valley, is unparalleled. The skiing is so varied that everyone can have a wonderful time. For experts it must be hard to beat the mind-blowing high altitude off-piste glacier skiing. For intermediates and beginners there is a huge choice, all with views to die for of the the Mont Blanc range. In addition to downhill skiing, you can snowboard - two dedicated snowparks - there is cross country skiing, ski touring (Chamonix is the start of the famous 6-day Haute Route to Zermatt), ski mountaineering, winter climbing, ice-climbing, paraski, telemarking, heleskiing, snow-shoeing. For après-ski there is a choice of restaurants and bars in Argentière and an even greater variety in Chamonix, ten minutes down the valley.
Non-skiers:
For non skiers there are peaceful and beautiful walks in the larch forest around Argentière. Chamonix is a lovely old town to visit with plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés, a cinema, swimming pool and skating rink, also the Alpine Museum and the Tairraz Exhibition Centre. The Montenvers cog railway takes you from Chamonix to the foot of the Vallée Blanche in the heart of the Mont Blanc massif. The Mont Blanc 'Express' with its panoramic roof takes you through the mountains from Le Fayet/St. Gervais to Martigny in Switzerland where you will find the famous Gianadda Foundation which has first-class temporary exhibitions as well as its permanent art collections. You could visit a Spa at St. Gervais, Lavey-les-Bains in Switzerland or Pré St. Didier in Italy, all within easy driving distance.
Skiing information:
The Chamonix Valley skiing is made up of several individual areas. Although It is helpful to have a car wherever you are staying in the valley, it is not essential as there is free public transport, by both bus and train. Height of Argentiere 1250m. Height of Grands Montets 3250m. Vertical drop Grands Montets to Argentiere 2000m. Length of ski season 21 weeks. Other areas in the Chamonix Valley include Le Tour, Flégère, Brévent, Aiguille du Midi and the Vallée Blanche (should be skied with a mountain guide), and Les Houches. Courmayeur (Italy) is included in the Mont Blanc Unlimited skipass. For a change of scene, Megève, Les Contamines and Flaine are within reach for a day's expedition.
