Barn, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

My home is a one-of-a-kind California beach house built by an aeronautical pioneer, Jacob Sellmer, who had an undeniable passion for flight. It is a true slice of history and you will find the old place fun, funky, warm, cozy, very private. It is situated on a dirt and sand lane one hundred yards from expansive and beautiful Stinson Beach.

Jacob Sellmer built this home and hanger with his wife in the early 1900s on the sands of Stinson Beach. He spent most of his life building airplanes that he flew off the beach with his son Walt. Jacob was also an avid cottage builder and several of the twelve or so cottages he built are still standing today. The Sellmers lived in the home until the late 1960s.

The house, hanger/barn was his workshop and to this day it still houses a screw wing he developed as a prototype in the quest to make vertical flight possible back in the late 1920s. If you Google Jacob Sellmer, you will find old science magazine articles to this fact.

Not only was the house used for manufacturing flying machines, but it was also used as a place to make music during the 1960s and 70s. The likes of Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, the Rowan Brothers, Commander Cody, and Stevie Ray Vaughn spent some time in the house or barn, doing what they did best.

I have lived here since 1991 and I'm the third owner. I have made major improvements to the barn to keep the wind and rain at bay and to make living or staying here completely comfortable. Please be nice to my lovely old house while I'm out of the country.

Stinson Beach is one of the most beautiful beach communities in California. Nowhere else in the world can you live on a dirt road with no street lights that ends on the mighty Pacific and drive to a world class city like San Francisco in forty minutes. It is unbelievable!

What makes this barn unique

If you want to spend time in an authentic historic California beach town, on a sandy private dirt road that ends at a perfect beach, surrounded by nice neighbors who love saying hello, you will find it here. The air is fresh, the wildlife abundant, and wonderful hikes and road trips await!
