The McKinley Retreat offers unique eco-friendly Adirondack vacation rentals nestled directly into the Adirondack forest approximately 30 minutes from the village of Lake Placid. Our rentals are designed to provide the privacy and tranquility you seek in one-of-a-kind 'camping-alternative' experience. You can also choose from several available backcountry ‘luxury’ options to temporarily transform a piece of our forest into your personal back-to-nature hideaway - only without many of the normal hassles associated with getting back-to-nature!
You have three rental options to choose from: 1) The rustic Hilltop Log Cabin site with a beautiful mountain view, has electricity and some appliances. Also, outdoor fireplace, hot outdoor shower and portable toilet 2) the Forest Cabin site snuggled under the tall pines has a covered outdoor kitchen area, screened-in seating area, and fire place. No electricity but drinking and wash water are provided. Has nearby portable toilet 3) the back-to-nature forest sites where you bring your own sleeping accommodations or we can set up a traditional ‘tent’ for you to experience.
We have recently added an office building located at the base of the mountain, near the parking area, with modern showers and flush toilets available for your use 24/7. The office part of the building is open daily for coffee, information, and a charging station for your electronics.
We welcome last minute availability inquiries – although the options will be limited. We also love pets at the McKinley Retreat so be sure to ask about the options to bring your pet. We do require a small refundable pet fee.
Please note this is a 'rustic' back-to-nature adventure and is only ideal if you are truly searching for a unique Adirondack vacation in the heart of the woods.
The Hilltop Log Cabin is an excellent choice for larger groups who share the same back-to-nature vision. The cabin itself can sleep at least 8 (more if you are really good friends!). And there is room to place a few small tents nearby on the Hilltop site for those in your group who prefer a little more privacy.
The McKinley Retreat is not for everyone and therein is part of the secret to its beauty. Visit our website for details or contact us (firstname.lastname@example.org ) and we will let you know exactly what to expect.

We have returned each year since our first visit in 2011, with our latest in Oct 2013 to enjoy the Adirondack fall colors. We stayed in the small eco-friendly forest cabin for this trip and while very different than the hilltop cabin (i.e., being situated directly in the forest under the tall pines as opposed to perched on a hilltop), it was equally rejuvenating and a very cozy setting!
We were a little concerned before we arrived that this forest cabin site had no electricity, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. That is, with the staff replenishing the large cooler with ice packs daily and the abundant battery powered lights - the common electricity related conveniences were covered. But with all the candles that were provided and the glowing campfire -- the evening lighting ambiance was perfect and all so peaceful!
Thanks again to the staff for their responsiveness as they answered all questions before we arrived so we knew what to expect for our stay in the forest cabin.
We're looking forward to our 2014 trip as the staff mentioned they were installing a new building near the base parking and check-in area. This apparently is going to be a common meeting point for guests where we can grab a cup of coffee -- or access hot indoor showers, rest rooms and recharging outlets. That is, it seems now, we will be able to hike into the forest to get away from civilization at our own private site (albeit with some pretty nice rustic options already) -- but then be able to take a short hike out to partake of those modern conveniences if we really need them!
We stayed at the McKinley Retreat in Sep 2011 for a total of 18 days. We chose the main hilltop cabin rental option with the full amenity package -- which essentially means we rented the entire 250+ acre forest estate for our private use! And while very rustic by urban standards, this was nicely 'luxurious' by back-country forest standards -- plus having all the estate's hiking/biking/walking trails reserved solely for our private use was a spectacular way to leave the world behind and get back-to-nature...and to ourselves.
The hilltop cabin we rented (surrounded by its picnicking/sunbathing granite ledges and the views that range from Whiteface Mt in the west all the way over to the Green Mountains of Vermont in the east) is periodically open to you when you rent one of the other sites available on the estate (which if you want to be embedded directly in the forest is the option to choose!). But having rented the cabin itself and the entire estate, meant all our picnics, reading and sunworshiping on the ledges around the cabin were totally uninterrupted!
For the few times we wanted other human interactions, it meant only a short 25 min drive to Lake Placid (a village that speaks for itself!) or even a very manageable 1.5-2 hr drive to Montreal Canada which proved to be a very charming and uniquely bilingual (French/English) North American city. Plus, golf and fishing outings (the nearby AuSable River is a recognizable name to trout fisherman!) were also very easy and the manager was very helpful in giving us tips, information, maps and even making reservations -- and generally pointing us in the right direction (whether for unique estate trail highlights or for Adirondack/regional highlights).
Speaking of the staff, they were very attentive to fulflling all the unique amenities of the 'luxury' options we chose. We basically saw them when they said/needed -- and then didn't see them again (perfect seclusion and privacy!)
All-in-all, this was exactly what we needed -- a peaceful, refreshing retreat into the rustic back-country Adirondack Mountain forest. We didn't quite know what to expect when we arrived, but left fully rejuvenated and already planning our 2012 return! But if you're expecting 5 star spa treatments, then don't go. This is back-country, rustic, adventurous....and all so peaceful........and for us, the price of renting the entire 250 estate and cabin was cheaper than renting a single house elsewhere in the Lake Placid region!
