Nice, clean, 2 person unit over garage.
This is a very clean one bedroom, one bed unit. It is located about a mile from Eastsound on a hill above Judd Cove, next to the owner's house. There is a pretty steep set of stairs to get to the unit unless one walks out on the lawn and up the hill. The windows have nice views of the lawn and Judd Cove. Except for the fact that there was nothing but salt, pepper, and sugar in the cupboards to cook with, it had everything else in the way of dishes, utensils, appliances, pots and pans. However, there is a large grocery store in Eastsound that has everything one needs. There are also several restaurants, although they keep short or no hours during the off season. Call before you go. There is also a washer and dryer. The queen bed was exceptionally comfortable. The Wi Fi worked, but was very slow most of the time. The 40" TV worked well and there was a DVD player, but no DVDs. The shower was in a claw foot tub, which had no place to put your hands when standing, so it was a little hard to stay balanced when showering. There are soap, shampoo, lotion, toilet paper, kleenex, and a small hair dryer. There is a small fire stove in the living room, with logs but no kindling. However, the central heating kept the place nice and warm. There is a nice patio out back with a barbecue, table, and chairs. There are also tall trees surrounding the unit, so it is in the shade a lot. The property has a very large lawn leading down to the cove. It has a series of ponds, which various birds visit, including eagles and herons. The beach is more of a pebble and rock beach, no sand. There are a table and chairs near the beach on the lawn. The owner was very nice and accommodating, with good tips on what to see and do and where to eat. However, she is selling the place so it may not be the same owner when you go. She also has a cat that can be very friendly. It may come visiting. Overall it was very comfortable for 2 people, but would be hard for physically handicapped. We would recommend for a short stay, such as a weekend or a few days. While there, take a whale cruise, rent a kayak or take a kayak adventure, but expect rain. There are some nice hikes, such as Obstruction Pass. Also drive to the top of Moran Park for the view from the lookout. There is a $10 per day fee to use the park and hiking trails. There are also lots of places to see birds and sea life along the island's coast. Ask the owner and other locals for their favorite spots.
Owner's Response: I am the original owner and that will not change on this site.
The Guest Cottage has 900 square feet of living space, carriage house style, above a detached garage built into a hill side. Pictures have been added to the web site showing the outside of the building. It is situated behind and to the side of the main house at an angle that gives privacy.
The stairs are standard risers with the standard 13 steps. No steeper than normal stairs rising up one level.
The picture of the pasture leading to the bay is taken from the Guest Cottage bedroom window. By NW standards the house sits on a small to medium hill.
It is against the county code to stock any food that has been opened, limiting the ability to provide spices or oils.
The Wi-Fi is the fastest speed available on the island and the guest cottage has its own modem. It appears the phone company has worked to improve its service.
There is a non-skid mat for the claw foot tub and several possibilities for using it, from a rain shower head to a hand held shower to a faucet for filling the tub.
The enameled wood stove has a glass front for fire watching. Extra fire wood and kindling are available a few feet away at the stone garden shed. A picture of the shed has been added to the web site.
Part of the beauty of the San Juans is its rugged rocky coast line. One would be hard pressed to find a sandy beach and many beaches are pocket beaches. At Judd Cove, the full head of the bay is available for walking. The protected cove has historical interest as an Indian Shell Midden and also as an old lime kiln location (the original lime kiln is still standing).
The description of the Guest Cottage on the web site states it is in the trees overlooking a sunny pasture and that it is not handicapped assessable. While there is no lawn, per say, it is surrounded on three sides by expansive pastures, just beyond the trees.
One must take into consideration the cost of the accommodation when rating a property. Others have rated Judd Cove Guest House five stars, not because it is truly a five star property, but because, for the money, it is a great value. One is not likely to find five star accommodations at a three star price, but Judd Cove is a good run for the money with some five star touches.
