Situated at the heart of one of the most famous wine growing areas of France, between Cognac and Bordeaux, the area exemplifies the good things in life; a leisurely pace of life; a climate second only the South of France: fine wines, and gourmet dining. The lovely coastal town of Royan is nearby as is La Rochelle, with its historic harbour, bustling habourside restaurants and fabulous shops. Cognac with its old distilleries is only half an hour away.
The ‘Route Vert’ runs along the side of the Gironde estuary and the rolling countryside with its wonderful views over the estuary will take you through timeless villages and harbours. Beaches nearby range from small, sandy coves at Meschers to stretches of fine sandy beaches at St George de Didonne and Royan and up to the lovely sand dunes and pine forests of the Cote Sauvage. The islands of Re, Oleron, and Aix are surrounded by miles of pine forest backed beaches with picturesque villages and harbours dotting the coastlines.
