São Marcos da Atabueira is located 13km away from the village of Castro Verde which offers restaurants, a Roman lamps museum, beautiful churches, a windmill that can also be visited, public swimming pool, disco, tennis courts, supermarkets, traditional products. São Marcos da Atabueira is in the heart of the Special Protection Area of Castro Verde where endangered species such as the great bustard, little bustard, lesser kestrel Montagu's harrier or black-bellied sandgrouse can be seen, the nature conservation NGO LPN organises birdwatching and nature photography programmes. 28km away is the historical village of Mértola, by the river Guadiana, and also heart of Guadiana Valley Natural Park. Landscape varies immensely during the year, from the flower fields in spring to the golden plains of summer that remind of Africa.
