We are big outdoors people, as you might be able to tell from the photo taken on an overnight rafting trip on the Salmon River. My dad grew up in Payette and as a child spent a month every summer at the old hotel at Burgdorf Hot Springs, about 30 miles north of McCall, so I've heard stories about the area all my life. My husband saw McCall for the first time about 20 years ago - we were headed further north for some rafting and had trouble finding a hotel. I knew McCall would have something, and his eyes grew bigger and bigger as we came down the hill into town and the lake came into view. He announced 'we're coming back here' and we have, almost every year since. We now have two very small grandchildren and cannot WAIT to explore the wonders of the McCall area with them!
We've been coming to McCall for many years and can't say enough good things about the area. The outdoor life is amazing, with every water sport known to man available within about an hour. Winter sports, ditto. There's some stupendous hiking, great hot springs, and the people here are wonderful, friendly and welcoming. Lots of good restaurants too! What's not to love? And all this only 2.5 hours north of Boise with its easy airport.
Being able to walk into town is great, but just staying in and cozying up by the fire is wonderful too. We especially love the farmer's market, it's such a nice way to get to know the locals and also sample the produce, meats, and oh those tamales! Easy walking to all the great little downtown parks and beaches too - so your older kids can walk there themselves, no need for a chauffeur.
