SEASIDE: 'Enjoy the clear ocean air of one of the world's most beautiful beaches.' NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. Seaside is THE seashore destination for experiencing popular year-round attractions. And staying at our Cottage will complete your perfect vacation.
THE COTTAGE: A wooden gateway entrance, picket fence and landscaped yard welcome you to Scout's Cottage. Walk down the stone steps to begin your relaxing stay at this charming beach cottage. You can hear and smell the fresh sea air, just 1 block away. The Hot Tub, outdoor shower, patio and lawn chairs, grill, tree swing, and trellis clothesline (which lights up at night) make up part of the lovely back yard landscape.
The Sun Room: surrounded with large glass windows, shiny hardwood floor, glossy white wood walls, books, sofa, chairs, a wooden doll house, toys, games, umbrellas, and even walking sticks.
The Kitchen: Spacious; sunny and unique. Our guests say this is their dream kitchen! A large glass front cupboard is filled with a wide choice of colorful vintage dinnerware, ranging from 1950s restaurant dishes to 1960s promotional plastic ware. The kitchen's highlight is the stainless steel six burners gas Decor stove. All the expected modern appliances are here, including a microwave, coffeemaker, full size refrigerator, and dishwasher. There's specially designed shelves that hold our vintage souvenir salt & pepper shakers; on the wall are brightly colored 1950s fruit chalkware, Oregon coastal memorabilia, a reclaimed neon sign and a large country table which seats eight.
The Bathroom: Downstairs, spacious with a combination claw foot bathtub/shower combination. All the toweling is provided.
The Back Porch: Contains the washer and dryer, and washing supplies. Iron and ironing board. No coin operated machines here.
The Living Room: Large, comfy, beautifully furnished, original paintings, murals and delightful collections to enjoy looking at for hours. Many guests have said they wanted to stay and explore the interior of the cottage rather than going to the beach!
One of our sons owns a independent DVD/VIDEO store in Portland; which means we can honestly say we have a fantastic collection of movies to enjoy. We always have 400+ movies at the cottage and revise the collection throughout the year. Another son owns two popular music stores in Portland, Jackpot Records, and he makes sure we are stocked with a wide variety of CDs to offer to our guests.
There's a library of novels and non-fiction reading, especially books about the Lewis and Clark Expedition along with local authors. The walls are filled with historic photographs, original artwork and a reclaimed mural. The walls are the original dark wood panels with 9 windows making this room cozy and happy. A large red enamel gas fireplace keeps you warm through any changes in the coastal weather.
Collector's Bedroom: The bed is queen sized with cotton sheets, blankets and quilts to keep you warm. We reclaimed a large painted mural that originally hung above a long-time favorite souvenir shop in downtown Seaside. In the middle of the painted local landscape is the word 'Collectors'. This describes the room perfectly! There are dozens of historic photographs of Oregon shipwrecks, Oregon coastal maps, and local photographs taken of the town and its people over a 100 year period.
One wall is covered with dozens of 1940s vintage wooden plaques. If you've never seen these whimsical images you'll surely enjoy reading what is carved or written on them. Very popular in the early part of the 1900s up to the 1960s, these souvenir plaques were one of the first vacation souvenirs that families would pick up as they traveled in their cars from state to state.
Paradise Bedroom: The other section of the painted mural resides in this pretty room. It has the painted word 'Paradise' on it. We think this word describes this room quite nicely. Homemade quilts are on each of the beds. There is a double size bed and a twin size bed in the bedroom. On one wall is a collection of vintage souvenir state plates, on another wall are turn of the century tin-foil artwork known as reverse painting with tinsel and dates back to victorian time.
We are very proud of Scout's Cottage and are committed to making your stay with us a memorable one.

About Kay Slusarenko
We are a Portland Architect and a Portland Artist who have owned this cottage (Scout's Cottage) and a smaller cottage next door (Birdie's Cottage) since 1977. The two homes were built in the early 1920s.
Kay Slusarenko purchased this cottage in 1978
Why Kay Slusarenko chose Seaside
Seaside is perfectly located to give visitors immediate access to a tremendous variety of activities. White sandy clean beaches, whale watching sites, historic cities (Astoria), historic landmark lighthouses, and a nearby Bird Estuary are just a few of the reasons our family is passionate about this coastal paradise.
In 1970, we moved to Portland, Oregon. One of our main reasons for picking Portland was the ability to get to the coast and to the mountains in 1-2 hours.
We often traveled with our children up and down the Oregon Coast but our favorite coastal town was Seaside.
We all fell in love with the community and the variety of activities that was suited to us individually and collectively as a family.
In 1978, we purchased the cottage which had originally been a part of a popular Drive-In Motor Court. It had served as the manager's home. Unfortunately, a fire ravaged the majority of the motor court's buildings in the mid-50s. Our cottage and a smaller structure survived.
Over the years we have remodeled it and equipped it with our own style of furnishings and collections. And now we proudly share it with you.
