Seaside Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Sofa sleeper, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5-6)

Our calendar is up to date!!

Immaculate one-of-a-kind vacation cottage. It's charming, special and comfortable. You will be in complete vacation mode from the minute you park the car!

Scout's Cottage is located next to little Historic Birdie's Cottage (VRBO #410151). You can rent both cottages which accommodate up to 10 guests.

SEASIDE: 'Enjoy the clear ocean air of one of the world's most beautiful beaches.' NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC. Seaside is THE seashore destination for experiencing popular year-round attractions. And staying at our Cottage will complete your perfect vacation.

THE COTTAGE: A wooden gateway entrance, picket fence and landscaped yard welcome you to Scout's Cottage. Walk down the stone steps to begin your relaxing stay at this charming beach cottage. You can hear and smell the fresh sea air, just 1 block away. The Hot Tub, outdoor shower, patio and lawn chairs, grill, tree swing, and trellis clothesline (which lights up at night) make up part of the lovely back yard landscape.

The Sun Room: surrounded with large glass windows, shiny hardwood floor, glossy white wood walls, books, sofa, chairs, a wooden doll house, toys, games, umbrellas, and even walking sticks.

The Kitchen: Spacious; sunny and unique. Our guests say this is their dream kitchen! A large glass front cupboard is filled with a wide choice of colorful vintage dinnerware, ranging from 1950s restaurant dishes to 1960s promotional plastic ware. The kitchen's highlight is the stainless steel six burners gas Decor stove. All the expected modern appliances are here, including a microwave, coffeemaker, full size refrigerator, and dishwasher. There's specially designed shelves that hold our vintage souvenir salt & pepper shakers; on the wall are brightly colored 1950s fruit chalkware, Oregon coastal memorabilia, a reclaimed neon sign and a large country table which seats eight.

The Bathroom: Downstairs, spacious with a combination claw foot bathtub/shower combination. All the toweling is provided.

The Back Porch: Contains the washer and dryer, and washing supplies. Iron and ironing board. No coin operated machines here.

The Living Room: Large, comfy, beautifully furnished, original paintings, murals and delightful collections to enjoy looking at for hours. Many guests have said they wanted to stay and explore the interior of the cottage rather than going to the beach!

One of our sons owns a independent DVD/VIDEO store in Portland; which means we can honestly say we have a fantastic collection of movies to enjoy. We always have 400+ movies at the cottage and revise the collection throughout the year. Another son owns two popular music stores in Portland, Jackpot Records, and he makes sure we are stocked with a wide variety of CDs to offer to our guests.

There's a library of novels and non-fiction reading, especially books about the Lewis and Clark Expedition along with local authors. The walls are filled with historic photographs, original artwork and a reclaimed mural. The walls are the original dark wood panels with 9 windows making this room cozy and happy. A large red enamel gas fireplace keeps you warm through any changes in the coastal weather.

Upstairs:

Collector's Bedroom: The bed is queen sized with cotton sheets, blankets and quilts to keep you warm. We reclaimed a large painted mural that originally hung above a long-time favorite souvenir shop in downtown Seaside. In the middle of the painted local landscape is the word 'Collectors'. This describes the room perfectly! There are dozens of historic photographs of Oregon shipwrecks, Oregon coastal maps, and local photographs taken of the town and its people over a 100 year period.

One wall is covered with dozens of 1940s vintage wooden plaques. If you've never seen these whimsical images you'll surely enjoy reading what is carved or written on them. Very popular in the early part of the 1900s up to the 1960s, these souvenir plaques were one of the first vacation souvenirs that families would pick up as they traveled in their cars from state to state.

Paradise Bedroom: The other section of the painted mural resides in this pretty room. It has the painted word 'Paradise' on it. We think this word describes this room quite nicely. Homemade quilts are on each of the beds. There is a double size bed and a twin size bed in the bedroom. On one wall is a collection of vintage souvenir state plates, on another wall are turn of the century tin-foil artwork known as reverse painting with tinsel and dates back to victorian time.

We are very proud of Scout's Cottage and are committed to making your stay with us a memorable one.

About Kay Slusarenko

We are a Portland Architect and a Portland Artist who have owned this cottage (Scout's Cottage) and a smaller cottage next door (Birdie's Cottage) since 1977. The two homes were built in the early 1920s.

Kay Slusarenko purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Kay Slusarenko chose Seaside

Seaside is perfectly located to give visitors immediate access to a tremendous variety of activities. White sandy clean beaches, whale watching sites, historic cities (Astoria), historic landmark lighthouses, and a nearby Bird Estuary are just a few of the reasons our family is passionate about this coastal paradise.

In 1970, we moved to Portland, Oregon. One of our main reasons for picking Portland was the ability to get to the coast and to the mountains in 1-2 hours.

We often traveled with our children up and down the Oregon Coast but our favorite coastal town was Seaside.

We all fell in love with the community and the variety of activities that was suited to us individually and collectively as a family.

In 1978, we purchased the cottage which had originally been a part of a popular Drive-In Motor Court. It had served as the manager's home. Unfortunately, a fire ravaged the majority of the motor court's buildings in the mid-50s. Our cottage and a smaller structure survived.

Over the years we have remodeled it and equipped it with our own style of furnishings and collections. And now we proudly share it with you.

Perfect for our family of 4!

  • 5 of 5
The cottage was perfect! The weekend away for our family was absolutely ideal. Once we got the kids down each night, my husband and I were able to enjoy the hot tub, then spend some quality time hanging out in the cozy living room. We enjoyed using this vacation as an excuse to "unplug" and not watch tv or use our cell phones. Such a wonderful experience and the owners were so accommodating as to provide things such as a pack n play, booster and even toys. The bed was so comfortable and we loved the decor. There was something to look at the entire time!

Can't wait for our next trip to the beach!

If I could give it six stars I would!

  • 5 of 5
Scout's Cottage is fabulous. It's the first place we've rented through VRBO that has actually surpassed the photos in the ad. Everything you could want for has been provided and its close proximity to the beach made it super easy for us as a family with a young child to trek back and forth to the beach during the day. The owners are a pleasure to deal with and even provide information about what is going on in the area and some ideas of things to do. If you're planning a trip to Seaside then this is the place to stay.

Owner's Response: Dear Sarah,
Thank you for such lovely remarks! Isn't it joyful to take your child to the beach each day when you are in Seaside?! We are so lucky that Scout's Cottage's location is so close to a beautifully secluded part of the beach.
You were such a wonderful family to work with and it was a pleasure to organize this trip for you.
Thank you again for praising how clean and unique our home is. I want to thank YOU for leaving it spotless and for taking the time to write such a nice review.
Hurry back,
Kay

Delightful, cozy and clean!

  • 4 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at Scout's Cottage! Our (4 y.o.) daughter spent hours in the sun room, playing with the doll house and numerous accessories. We found oodles of videos that we would have loved to watch if our stay had been longer. The decor is fun and appealing to young and old, and the house was immaculately clean--amazing for a beach house!
We would love to come back. We'll review Scout's Cottage with a fifth star if more kitchen shelf space is provided for our food and supplies.
Thanks for a lovely stay!

Owner's Response: Hi Jennifer,
I'm so pleased to hear that your well-deserved vacation was wonderful and that your time spent at the cottage was comfortable, relaxing and fun.

I love children to experience the cottage because they are so happy to see things that are there that they can play with. The wooden dollhouse, books and toys are some examples along with the many children's DVDs. I hope your daughter discovered the tiny cupboard in the kitchen that when opened contained a child size tea set.
Thank you for staying at our cottage and we hope you will return soon.

Scouts cottage

The owner, Kay was very helpful in booking the accomodations. Scouts cottage is immaculate. We loved the kitschy decor. The beds were comfortable with lovely linens. Location is as described. We would stay again. A gas firepit in the back yard would have been perfect.

Scouts Cottage-Seaside

  • 5 of 5
My family had not stayed in the Seaside/Astoria area before. Our main purpose for the trip was to meet my brother and his family to do some fishing at "buoy 10". It was April when we started searching for a place to stay for the August fishing date. We found Scouts Cottage thru the VRBO site and decided it fit for our needs. We certainly were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the cottage. My wife spent the first couple hours admiring the decor style and how it was all neatly displayed. She too has a collection of similar items and was inspired by the arraignment. As a practical matter the place was clean, comfortable and had all the necessities to make for a carefree outing. And the beds slept well. The location was quiet and peaceful and situated just right to easily enjoy the great beach, promenade and old town shops. We would walk the beach to town and take turns choosing what place we would eat at next and then walk the beach back to the cottage for a dip in the hot tub. The whole experience was over too soon and left us wanting to come back to see and enjoy more of what the area has to offer. We would certainly choose Scouts Cottage as a home base again.

Owner's Response: Dear Gene,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of our vacation home. And what a wonderful review!! You and your wife were delightful and you left our home in perfect condition. I'm also very pleased to read that your wife liked the interior of the house. Ron is a retired architect and over the years has remodeled and improved the cottage without losing its original character. My goal was to furnish it with "souvenirs" of the 40s - 60s. And yet make it current when it came to the appliances and the beds and such. I also wanted original artwork, historical photographs and objects we had bought that were from the Seaside area to be hung in each room. It's been fun for us and each year we add more! This Fall, Ron and I will return to add to the collections, make some improvements and just keep making Scout's Cottage, as well as Birdie's Cottage, the very best vacation rentals on the Oregon Coast! Thank you again, Kay

Charming Getaway

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful time at scout's Cottage. The decor is simply wonderful and nostalgic. I enjoyed the owner's decorative choices and the amenities made cooking meals so easy. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone wanting to visit this area. A short walk to downtown Seaside with its shops, restaurants and the aquarium, and the trail to the ocean is just at the end of the road. My family had a fantastic stay!

Owner's Response: Hi Kristen,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Seaside just keeps getting better each year. I'm very proud of how fun it is for visitors to enjoy our town and yet within a matter of minutes you can be in Astoria, or at an amazing National Park or next door in Cannon Beach. Or at our cottage relaxing! You were a lovely guest and I hope you'll be able to visit us again. Thank you. Kay
