MEDIEVAL WATCH-TOWER QUIETLY OVERLOOKING THE SPOLETO VALLEY

Campello sul Clitunno Tower Rental Photos and Description

Tower, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

The Watch-Tower, I Cerri (Italian for 'The Turkey Oaks') proudly stands as one of Italy's more secret listed historic properties. Nestling in the Appennines overlooking the Spoleto Valley towards Montefalco and, just a bit further beyond, Tuscany, you will appreciate the absolute privacy and quiet while sipping on an aperitif on the ample terrace, where you will be doing most of your outdoor entertaining, or, in the cooler months, cooking your hearty meals in true Umbrian style in the kitchen fireplace.

Though perfect for just the two of you, if you are travelling with another couple or your family, you will nevertheless have all the privacy and comfort modern living can muster. The two fully-furnished bedrooms, one with an en-suite bathroom, the other with its bathroom two steps away in the corridor, are completely autonomous with breath-taking views and oodles of character. The bedroom with the en-suite bathroom also boasts a French boat-bed with inlaid wood ca.1804, in which Napoleon himself with said to have slept with his ravishing Josephine. Various other antiques, rugs and paintings add further charm to the medieval structure.

In the living room just off the large kitchen-dining area, you can admire the rock face, which is the mountain itself, onto which the tower was originally built all those centuries ago. It provides for a naturally cool environment, even on the hottest August days, and, thanks to the floor heating working perfectly right throughout the entire structure, a cosy area in which to snuggle up in the cooler months.

The tower itself is positioned, in true medieval style, to catch the warmth of the sun from mid morning to sunset. If you happen to be here at the summer solstice in June, for example, you will notice that I Cerri looks exactly in the direction of that very special sunset that embues everything with a reddish-pinkish hue.

Up and behind the house on the hill side, there are some delightful terraced areas in amongst the olive trees and the many colourful flowers, where you can either sit and read, snooze the afternoon away or have yet another aperitif before lunch or dinner. A large BBQ area is perfect for providing those outdoor meals characterising summer living.

I am a philologist with a particular interest in the medieval and Renaissance periods. I deal with texts and their transmission and have lectured at the Universities of Edinburgh, Oxford, Milan, Perugia and Rome 'La Sapienza'. I carry out most of my research at the Vatican Library in Rome, but do prefer to come back to I Cerri for the peace and quiet. It is here that I can really concentrate on my work and get my writing done.

As you can imagine, I LOVE what I do and sharing it with those others drawn to this area, especially over the odd ice-cold prosecco or two. And I Cerri is truly the perfect place in which to do it!

Rodney Lokaj purchased this tower in 1992

I Cerri and I have a love affair that literally started at first sight. We instantly realised that I belonged to her and she belonged to me, even though I did not even know at the time whether she was for sale, who the owner was, anything! As it turned out, the Cistercians who were going to get it and turn it into their Umbrian hermitage opted for a much larger complex in the Marches and I got it instead! I really feel it was meant to be!

The best facet about a stay here at I Cerri is that you can spend the day in a bustling city such as Rome, Florence or Perugia, or in perhaps one of the smaller tourist towns such as Assisi, Spello and Spoleto itself, and come back here in the evening to a relaxing atmosphere in cosy elegance and fresh, sweet-smelling air. At I Cerri you are literally in the heart of Italy with it all surrounding you, yet quietly detached in full privacy and harmony with nature.

Absolute Perfection: wish we were still there!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at I Cerri for a week and there is nothing that could possibly have been better about our experience there. The owner of the property had wonderful suggestions about things to see and do, some of the well-known sights and towns. Yes, we went to Assisi, some of the nearby Tuscan hill towns, and had a wonderful time in Spoleto. The real gems that he shared, though, were things somewhat off the main tourist track: the 1500 year old olive tree down the road, the spring which is the reputed site of an oracle that Caesar consulted, a fantastic and way out of the way family-owned pizzeria, another restaurant nearby whose basement we toured which shows not only the building's ancient Roman empire origins but also its Etruscan past, a path through the oak forest just up the drive that we followed for a couple of hours one afternoon, where we could purchase some truffles from a local gatherer, and so many other very nearby treasures we never could have hoped to stumble across without the owner's suggestions.
The house was everything one could hope for. It was so full of 'atmosphere.' It's history was palpable. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen fully-stocked with all the necessary items to create our own meals for the times we cooked, the garden was stunning as was the grove of olive trees into which the gardens lead. And what a view! We had coffee in the morning and cocktails at sunset on the terrace overlooking the valley below.
One of the things we really enjoyed was the feeling of isolation there at I Cerri yet we were so close to all of the area attractions. There were no traffic noises whatsoever, not from the roads in the valley nor the meandering laness on the hills surrounding us. We had the songs of the native birds and not much else.
We can hardly wait to visit again and to settle into the wonderful setting and lifestyle that this wonderful property so beautifully offers. Next time, we'll hope to be able to stay longer and experience the other seasons, too.

The Watch-tower is situated on the Via Francigena di San Francesco, the famous medieval pilgrims' route once connecting Rome to southern France and from there to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Today it is still travelled on by the more spiritually inclined among us and hiking enthusiasts. By simply following the signs dotted along the way, you could go north and end up in Assisi, or south towards the township of Spoleto and Norcia. Here you can visit places of historic interest, such as St Benedict's home and the beginnings of Western monasticism, the 'sacred wood' at Monteluco, monasteries, abandoned medieval churches, and secluded places of Franciscan worship. If you wanted to, it could even guide you right down to Rome and the Basilica of St Peter!
