While you are here, we hope you will feel that Aina Lani is your Hawaiian home ...
We are a retired couple who love to share the happiness and fun of Hawaii with others. If you like, we will be happy to help you create a trip tailored to your interests ... ocean and beaches ... volcano and geological ... stars .... shopping! ... archeological, historic and cultural ... island artists ... flowers and culinary ... farmer's markets ... social .... scientific.
The Big Island is like a small continent--there is an enormous amount to experience here.
We have been here a combined 26 years, exploring the island, and enjoying its wonders, and so we have a lot to share. We are avid hikers, and hike in Volcano Park a lot, so we can offer insights on hiking in the park--you could spend a week hiking there, and never repeat a trail! We love deep nature, wild places, and the ocean. Anne is currently completing a book about Hawaii, with many fascinating stories about this remarkable island.
Anne purchased this cottage in 2000
Wood Valley is Sanctuary.
Wood Valley has a magical quality that eludes words. As you enter the valley, you travel under an archway of tall trees, passing the gemlike little Buddhist Temple in gold and red, and you feel a subtle thrill ... you know you are in a special place.
Wood Valley is hidden and away, like a secret gem. When the sun shines, it shimmers gold across all the green ... when the trade winds blow, it feels free and clear, invigorating ... when the afternoon mists wisp down from the rim, it feels mystical, like a Shangri La.
At dusk and dawn, the pure peace is something you can feel in your heart, sustaining. As the sun sets, a deep stillness takes hold, and the air becomes velvety, richly fragrant with night jasmine, ginger and angel trumpet ... a grace so freely given by nature.
The peace at night under the stars is the deepest we have known. It is mesmerizing to sit under a starry canopy in the stillness, watching the stars travel in their slow arcs, the fragrant night air and peace surrounding you. All is right with the world.
What price, this beauty and peace, this grace and joy? It is so easy to get city experiences in our culture, so very difficult to find places of true purity.
Wood Valley is a place of true purity and sustaining peace.
Please read the descriptions above in the profile and amenities sections.
In addition, there are many enjoyable hikes around here--the valley itself, and some leading into wild forests. We can show you a few.
We have a new coffee mill just a few miles away, where you can see Ka'u coffee being processed. (Ka'u coffee is world class--it recently swept the international competition in world coffees.)
Visit a wonderful studio of miniature, fine-quality Hawaiian dolls, Menehune Studio. These are darling little menehunes... dolls with soul that carry the spirit of Hawaii. Each one is lavished with love and the artful touches of Sabine Hendreshke. These are exceptionally special, crafted with heartful caring, and yet reasonably priced--well worth a delightful visit!
It is very, very healthy here--purest water, glorious sun, perfumed air, rich soil, nurturant rains... nights of brilliant stars, deep renewing silence and dark.
Eating from the organic garden is well-being itself-- very strengthening and life-giving. Our good earth is very sustaining, and the flowers are a joy!
Unedited email ... this family escaped for a much-needed mini vacation:
"My boys really enjoyed picking fresh fruit and veggies!
Thanks so much! It was wonderful to turn out the lights and have the moon be the brightest light at night! We had a wonderful little vacation.”
My wife and I stayed here for our second honeymoon. It could not have been more perfect. Private, beautiful, quiet, wonderful grounds, waterfalls and birds, perfectly appointed with lovely attention to detail by Anne and David. The colors of the cottage are so sensual. Cannot recommend highly enough. And the bed featured in the photo above, the best night's sleep we've had in ages.
The cottage was so much more that we expected. We loved every minute of our visit. What an amazing feeling to wake up every morning in this cozy cottage, surrounded by the beauty of nature. So many gorgeous flowers and fruit trees! The cottage itself is so private, yet close enough to so many great spots on the Big Island - perfect "day trips" nearby. Anne and David were great hosts, providing us a fresh fruit basket upon arrival, being available when needed, yet giving us total privacy around the cottage.
We hope to return to the Big Island someday, and would definitely consider staying at this cottage again!
We arrived late in the evening and Anne and David were waiting for us. The cottage was very well equipped, especially the kitchen, loved the local wood used in the cottage. They thought of everything we could possibly want. The bed is as comfortable as others have said. Best night sleep ever. The cottage is located closer to Hilo than Kona.
Thanks to Anne and David for creating this lovely piece of paradise for us to enjoy! From the inviting entrance of the property and land to the welcoming basket of local picked fruits and amazingly appointed cottage, we felt cradled in paradise! If you're considering a REAL getaway from the hustle and bustle of the world, in the warmth and comfort of Aina Lani you should go! We had our honeymoon here and the serenity of the mystical and magical Wood Valley and this wonderful lush haven nurtured our souls and inspired our true senses. You will love the mango countertops in the kitchen, the beautiful windows facing the gardens all around, the romance of the space and the opening of the senses. Wow! My husband and I will definitely be back one day! Also, true black sand beach 20 mins away, volcano natl park 30 mins, green sand beach 45 mins away. You won't run out of things to do if you can tear yourself away from this magnificent cottage... Mahalo Nui loa! John and Annette
This was by far the nicest rental we stayed at during our honeymoon (in all of the 3 islands we visited)! The cottage itself was one of the highlights of the trip! We only wish we had budgeted more time on the Big Island to include some time for relaxation at the cottage.
Anne and David were amazing hosts, offering a full tour of the grounds (unbelievably beautiful) and fresh fruits from their garden. After our initial meet and greet, they disappeared and left us with complete privacy for the duration of our stay.
The pictures do not do this place justice. Not only was it beautifully decorated and well stocked, but it's also impeccably clean. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway for a honeymoon, we could not recommend this enough.
Rarely will you find a place as lovely, unique and memorable as this. The cottage is immaculate, designed and built with loving care (including the use of local woods in the kitchen), and decorated with a comforting serenity. Given the cool evenings, the soaking/spa tub was a welcome delight after a night of volcano viewing. Anne and David have thought of every detail...including the bubble bath! Dinner on the terrace was a delight...and the stars,,,oh my! The gardens are beyond spectacular! Do have Anne give you a tour. Such a place of peace, calm and comfort...with the black sand beaches and volcanoes just a short drive away. Amazing!
