Located on a quiet country lane, the cottage of Vapore di Mare is a short walk to the town center and dock. Here you can watch the sunrise over the morning mist while you take your coffee on our deck overlooking Castine harbor.Catch a glimpse of seals or a working lobster boat. At night, the moonrise over the still water is truly magical. Or take your kayak around the corner to the phosphorescent waters in Hatch cove. Go biking, hike in nearby Witherle Woods or just walk the short half mile into town. Too much activity? Grab a book and veg out in one of our colorful Adirondack chairs. Our private, newly renovated cottage is yours to enjoy.
Cottage is 1/2 mile from town center and is located on 1.5 acre property next to the owner's home. Note to parents of young children: there is a small unfenced pond on the property. This has not been a problem with the many young families that have stayed here. Note that the bedrooms are upstairs in the cottage. Minimum stay one week.

We found this property after searching the coast for the right place. When we found it, it had been on the market for several years but no one was interested because of the 1950s vinyl sided double wide house. But the view was unbelievable and to this day workmen never fail to comment on it. So we bought the property and Sam redesigned the house and cottage. At first it was our summer place. Then 9 years ago we moved here fulltime.
What we love about the place: It's quiet on a private dirt road yet only 1/2 mile from town. You look out the windows to an always changing scene as the tide ebbs and flows. Birds, ducks, seals and the resident bald eagles complement the views.
Bob&Sam, thanks so much for a delightful week. ....know that four or five pages of rough draft were written in your cottage. It's a good place in which to scribble.
Castine is a national historic site having been occupied by the British in the American Revolution and war of 1812. Many homes and forts date from that time. The Castine Historic Society and Wilson Museum are 2 venues worth seeing. Every other Friday evening there is a Castine Town Band concert on the common. Kayaking and hiking are prominent activities in town. The 9 hole golf course is a gem dating from late 19th century. It is open to the public at reasonable prices and you don't need a tee time.Tennis courts are also available. For those interested in Acadia National Park, it is a 1.5 hr drive from Castine.
