AREA ACCOLADES: Everyone loves Whidbey!

Ranked 3rd Best Island in US by USA Today readers 2014.

Sunset called it of the '20 best Island Escapes 2014.

Travel & Leisure’s Most Romantic Summer Destinations July 2010 issue featured Whidbey Island as one of their 16 picks world wide: “Though it’s only a 20-minute ferry ride from the Seattle suburb of Mukilteo, this island oasis feels like the Pacific Northwest’s last frontier—a lost-in-time place of towering Cedars and sparkling coves overlooking Puget Sound.”

The area is know as 'The Sunny side of Whidbey' thanks to a third less rainfull than most of the Pacific NW coast. A twelve month 'sunshine study' was done in Sequim in 2010 & 2012 demonstating the dramatic effect of the rainshadow on the days of sun and rain. Here are some highlights from the sunshine studies:

•Winter (Nov-Jan) saw 5X as many mostly sunny days in the shadow vs. Seattle.

•Winter saw only 1/4 as many dreary days in the shadow vs. Seattle.

•Spring (Feb-May) saw the highest number of 'rain shadow' days per month, at nearly 8!

•Summer (Jul-Sep) saw rain shadow areas and Seattle with nearly equal mostly sunny days.

• Coupeville received 20' of rain compared Seattle's 36'

http://www.olympicrainshadow.com/

After reading about the 'shadow' it is obvious that you chances of enjoying some sunshine here November through March are about 75% better than along the I-5 corridor! Due to its drier climate and position over stunning coastal areas, it is often an ideal location for many activities, such as beach walks/ hiking, golf, bicycling, wave watching, or simply exploring. What great reasons to consider booking a few days at Ranvik Beach House during the winter months!

It is also called 'The closest place to far away' & for many residents of the Washington I-5 corridor you can get away on a single fill of the gas tank!.

Seattle King 5 TV viewers nominated Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve as 'Best Hiking Trail; Best Place to Watch a Sunset; Best Picnic Spot; Best Bird Watching'.

Sunset Magazine has named the Keystone to Port Townsend as one of the 5 best ferry rides in the Northwest.

Ebey’s Landiing is billed in local guidebooks as one of the best hikes in Washington. 'This 5.6-mile trail, just five minutes from Coupeville, with mostly dry trails year round, far exceed the expectations of many visitors.'

For a complete guide to visiting Coupeville, including restaurants, lodging and shops contact the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce visitors center at 905 NW Alexander St.

DISCLAIMER: 95% of the time this is a very quiet area. However ~5% of the time, almost always during weekdays, people in the Keystone area may experience jet noise when the jets from Whidbey Naval Station are practicing carrier landings on the outlying field 3 miles north of the house. Flyovers typically last 1/2 to 2 hours. Occasionally they last up to 6 hours and continue for an hour or two after darkness. These flyovers are sporadic and we have no way of knowing when they will occur. Be aware that ALL homes along the Keystone Spit / Admiralty Bay are subject to this.

Many think it is really interesting to get a close up view of these fantastic flying machines. Others find it is real annoying, especially after 10 pm (very rare).

If this happens while you are staying at Ranvik Beach House we suggest one of two options:

1. Stay inside and wait it out. It isn't too bad in the media room with the volume cranked up. We have ear plugs and two sets of noise cancellng headphones in our home for guest use; these mute but don't eliminate the sound.

2. Hop in your car & go somewhere else for a couple of hours.

Chance are that you will not experience this. However, if this would ruin your vacation, you may want to consider renting in some area other than Admiralty Bay / Keystone Spit. Please understand that we have no control over this and we do not offer any sort of refund or compensation to guests who experience these flyovers.

About Lisa

We are a semi-retired professional couple who love the natural beauty of God's creation & enjoy quiet relaxation, fishing, hiking, and travel. We remodeled our first home on Whidbey Island in 1975 and have been building and remodeling homes for a hobby in the Bellingham area and now again on Whidbey. This well built home was a joy to restore and we decided to add a touch of Cape Cod to it giving it a more cozy feel. The name Ranvik is Lisa's family name in Norway which means Bay of The Ravens.

We appreciate art and architecture & this house offers some of both. The Ranvik Beach House was built by a Seattle architect in 1964 as a family vacaction get-a-way at the height of the Mid-Century Modern era. He developed Admiral's Cove which includes a mile of beach. He had his choice of any building site on which to build his signature beach home. This site was selected for its outstanding orientation to all the breathtaking natural beauty and has the largest beach frontage of all the surrounding homes providing an extra measure of privacy.

The house reflects the state of the construction art at the time with a wonderfully timeless, very functional beach vacation home design. The interior is very unique with shiplap interior & exterior siding and many interesting, angular corners and spaces.

Our total interior remodel in 2012 maintained the home's original, unique character while incorporating the convenience & comforts of a modern home. The tasteful update is in a cozy, bright, contemporary Scandinavian style.

Since completing the remodel in early 2012 we have found this to be a magical place for relaxation and enjoyment. It is our hope that you will have the same experience while staying here.

Lisa purchased this house in 2011

Why Lisa chose Coupeville

We lived on Whidbey Island years ago & have been coming back several times a year ever since. So we knew what a wonderful place it is .

For several years we had been looking for a beach home to use as a get-away retreat for family and friends. After considering many areas we concluded that the Coupeville / Keystone area offered unsurpassed natural beauty along with a wide variety of recreational opportunites. Coupling that with the fact that it has some of the best weather west of the Cascades and is easily accessible by car clinched it for us.

Now that we have had this beach house for over a year; we have no doubt that we made a great choice! This is truly a wonderful place where one can just totally relax. At the same time, if in the mood, there is a wide variety of fun, interesting activites only minutes out the door.

We are confident you will enjoy it as much as our family does!

1-10-13 update: Please read our reviews you will see that we're not the only ones who think this is a Magic Place. Over 50 Five Star reviews in less than 2 years with nary a complaint! All our guests have been thrilled and so are we! We're confident you will be also.

What makes this house unique

There simply is not a nicer beach house in the Coupeville area!

Another unique benefits is the fact that Ranvik Beach House is located in the Olympic rainshadow. The result is third less rain and 30% more sunshine than most of western Washington, Oregon and lower British Columbia. It is appropriately refered to as the 'Sunny Side of Whidbey'.

Like to dine out? You are in luck as Whidbey Island has been designated a state tourist 'Culinary Destination'! The close and very quaint towns of Coupeville and Freeland offer many excellent dining options from basic fare to gourmet dining. There is great shopping and spas for extra relaxation. Several wineries are close to the beach house with a wineries tour map available at the house. The owners of Ranvik Beach House are very familiar with Whidbey Island and can assist you in gathering current information about tourist sites, outdoor activities, restaurants and special events on Whidbey Island.

If your idea of vacation & relaxation involves physical activities such as walking on the beach, fishing, biking (road or mountain style), day hiking, golf, kite flying, diving, kayaking, boating, or swimming you will find a place to do any of these within 10 minutes of the beach house. There is seasonal salmon and steelhead fishing from shore August - March. Ebey Historical Preserve, Fort Casey and other sites feature a wide variety of interesting places to explore. A near by public pool, basketball court, volleyball lawn an freshwater lake are within steps of the house and are available to guests.

Area Accolades:

Travel & Leisure’s Most Romantic Summer Destinations July 2010 issue featured Whidbey Island as one of their 16 picks world wide: “Though it’s only a 20-minute ferry ride from the Seattle suburb of Mukilteo, this island oasis feels like the Pacific Northwest's last frontier...

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dan,

We arrived home shortly ago after an absolutely perfect weekend at your amazingly beautiful home! Thank you so much for the stay, which was just the perfect family/friend getaway. My friends arrived first and their text said "The pictures don't do it justice" which was the absolute truth!. It's obvious you care greatly for your home and put in much time and effort to keep it so amazing. We appreciated the small touches as well like the soaps and the jam you left for us.

How wonderful it was to be disconnected with our regular lives and plugged into island life instead. Very appreciative of the opportunity. We're already thinking of when we can rent it next and my 6 yr old told me he wants his birthday there next year! :)

So appreciative,

~SM and family...

Oh my a little piece of heaven........

Oh my a little piece of heaven........ The views, the house, the decorations, the attention to detail. It was so homey!
The pictures online are great, but the actual view in person is GORGEOUS!
Our family of 5 (ages 58-30) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ranvik house. We had never visited the Washington area, will definitely go back. The island is gorgeous, many good places to eat, quaint little towns for shopping.
The guys enjoyed 4 rounds of golf, 3 at Holmes Harbor and 1 at Gallery by the Navy base. The grounds were beautiful and in good condition.
We took advantage of Whale Watching excursion, (Islands of Adventure), saw many whales!
We all wished we could pack the view and take it home with us!

Thank you Lisa & Dan for allowing others to enjoy your beautifully decorated home, well equipped with everything you could possible need or want.

Our family will definitely be back in the future!

VRBO Stay of a Lifetime

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from the Ranvik Beach House where we had the stay of a lifetime. The views of the water, mountains, sunsets, moon sets were all spectacular. Whidbey Island has several very interesting state parks where hiking is pretty easy. My husband took several challenging bike rides and I got some less challenging rides in. The ambience of the beach house makes any occasion relaxing and easy. The kitchen is a dream kitchen with all the necessities easily found. We had a great time and so did the guests we invited. Lisa and Dan were the best and we followed their suggestions and didn't go wrong. Can't wait to go back.

Excellent stay at RBH

We had an excellent stay during our time at RBH. There are thoughtful touches of comfort and ease in this beautiful home. Dan and Lisa are very easy to work with and we appreciated their hospitality. There is no question we would stay again in this property. Front to back and throughout this home, attention to detail is evident.

80th Birthday Celebration at Ranvik Beach House

  • 5 of 5
Our family recently rented the Ranvik Beach house for our mother's 80th surprise birthday celebration. We were all extrememly impressed with the beauty of the home and the specatacular views. The layout of the home works really well for a group, allowing plenty of space and privacy if needed. Having a separate media room works really well and to be honest was very raily used because any down time you want to spend either outside on the deck or just relax in the main room looking out at the wonderful water and mountain views.

Each room is decorated beautifully and comfortably, and the owners have really thought of everything that their guest may need during their stay. We spent as much time as possible out on the deck and on the patio by the large fire pit. Views of eagles perched on flagpoles and flying along the shore edge was quite frequest during out stay and we were even able to spot on of the large nexts tucked in the high trees.

The Ranvik beach house was a true pleasure to stay at and would love to come back for another visit. We found the town of Coupeville quant, shopowners friendly. Twice we ate at the Front Street Cafe where the Penn Cove mussels were excellent!

The owners, Lisa and Dan are great to work with and they really want their guests to enjoy their stay in their lovely home and we would highly recommend this location for a stay at Whidby Island.

Fantastic in Every Way

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at this outstanding home with our two daughters and their husbands and had a truly wonderful time. I just cannot say enough for the magnificent home, so beautifully laid out with absolutely everything you could possibly need. And of course the house is right on the beach so the views from all the windows are stunning. We spent most of our time outside enjoying the water and magnificent views of the Olympics in the distance. An added bonus was watching a pair of bald eagles fly back and forth over our head to their nest in the trees. We had planned to go out to dinner the first night in Coupeville but once we arrived we decided it was too nice to leave. So we made a trip to the local food market where we got everything we needed and were very happy to eat with the sound of the waves lapping up beside us. Thank you Lisa and Dan for making your home so comfortable and welcoming, we will be back for sure.

Owner's Response: Lynn & Jas, were glad your family had such a good time. Hopefully the most difficult decision you had to make during your stay was whether to dine in Coupeville or on the deck at our house! It is hard to leave the place, especially given the wonderful weather you were blessed with! Thank you for such nice compliments. We look forward to hosting you again.

A perfect beach house

  • 4 of 5
We rented this beautiful home for a 60th birthday celebration for my father. Six adults slept comfortably in the three bedrooms. The house was very clean and had everything we needed to cook great meals and just relax! The deck facing the beach is the best part of the house--we spent hours out there in the May sunshine. We also had a great time with the fire pit and enjoyed morning and afternoon walks on the beach. The only reservation about the place is that the living room area is not very easy to lounge in and it's not that comfortable for more than about 2 adults. Luckily the sun was out for us so we didn't need to spend much time in the living room. It's a place I would return to again!

We're sorry the living room furniture didn't meet your needs, that is the 1st time we have heard such a comment. That is something We will take this into consideration for the future.
