AREA ACCOLADES: Everyone loves Whidbey!

Ranked 3rd Best Island in US by USA Today readers 2014.

Sunset called it of the "20 best Island Escapes" 2014.

Travel & Leisure’s Most Romantic Summer Destinations July 2010 issue featured Whidbey Island as one of their 16 picks world wide: “Though it’s only a 20-minute ferry ride from the Seattle suburb of Mukilteo, this island oasis feels like the Pacific Northwest’s last frontier—a lost-in-time place of towering Cedars and sparkling coves overlooking Puget Sound.”

The area is know as 'The Sunny side of Whidbey' thanks to a third less rainfull than most of the Pacific NW coast. A twelve month 'sunshine study' was done in Sequim in 2010 & 2012 demonstating the dramatic effect of the rainshadow on the days of sun and rain. Here are some highlights from the sunshine studies:

•Winter (Nov-Jan) saw 5X as many mostly sunny days in the shadow vs. Seattle.

•Winter saw only 1/4 as many dreary days in the shadow vs. Seattle.

•Spring (Feb-May) saw the highest number of 'rain shadow' days per month, at nearly 8! During the summer most days are sunny days.

• Coupeville received 20' of rain compared Seattle's 36'

http://www.olympicrainshadow.com/

After reading about the 'shadow' it is obvious that you chances of enjoying some sunshine here November through March are about 75% better than along the I-5 corridor! Due to its drier climate and position over stunning coastal areas, it is often an ideal location for many activities, such as beach walks/ hiking, golf, bicycling, wave watching, or simply exploring. What great reasons to consider booking a few days at Ranvik Beach House during the winter months!

It is also called 'The closest place to far away' & for many residents of the Washington I-5 corridor you can get away on a single tank of gas!

Seattle King 5 TV viewers nominated Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve as 'Best Hiking Trail; Best Place to Watch a Sunset; Best Picnic Spot; Best Bird Watching'.

Sunset Magazine has named the Keystone to Port Townsend as "one of the 5 best ferry rides in the Northwest."

Ebey’s Landiing is billed in local guidebooks as one of the best hikes in Washington. 'This 5.6-mile trail, just five minutes from Coupeville, with mostly dry trails year round, far exceed the expectations of many visitors.'

For a complete guide to visiting Coupeville, including restaurants, lodging and shops contact the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce visitors center at 905 NW Alexander St.

DISCLAIMER: 95% of the time this is a very quiet area. However ~5% of the time, always during weekdays, people in the Keystone area may experience jet noise when the jets from Whidbey Naval Station are practicing carrier landings on the outlying field 3 miles north of the house. Flyovers typically last 1 to 2 hours. Occasionally they last up to 6 hours and continue for an hour or two after darkness. These flyovers are sporadic and we have no way of knowing when they will occur. Be aware that ALL homes along the Keystone Spit / Admiralty Bay are subject to this.

Many think it is really interesting to get a close up view of these fantastic flying machines. Others find it is real loud and annoying, especially after 10 pm (very rare).

If this happens while you are staying at Ranvik Beach House we suggest one of two options:

1. Stay inside and wait it out. It isn't too bad in the media room with the volume cranked up. We have ear plugs and two sets of noise cancellng headphones in our home for guest use; these mute but don't eliminate the sound.

2. Hop in your car & go somewhere else for a couple of hours.

Chance are that you will not experience this. However, if this would ruin your vacation, you may want to consider renting in some area other than Admiralty Bay / Keystone Spit. Please understand that we have no control over this and we do not offer any sort of refund or compensation to guests who experience these flyovers.

About Lisa

We are a semi-retired professional couple who love the natural beauty of God's creation & enjoy quiet relaxation, fishing, hiking, and travel. We remodeled our first home on Whidbey Island in 1975 and have been building and remodeling homes for a hobby in the Bellingham area and now again on Whidbey. This well built home was a joy to restore and we decided to add a touch of Cape Cod to it giving it a more cozy feel. The name Ranvik is Lisa's family name in Norway which means Bay of The Ravens.

We appreciate art and architecture & this house offers some of both. The Ranvik Beach House was built by a Seattle architect in 1964 as a family vacaction get-a-way at the height of the Mid-Century Modern era. He developed Admiral's Cove which includes a mile of beach. He had his choice of any building site on which to build his signature beach home. This site was selected for its outstanding orientation to all the breathtaking natural beauty and has the largest beach frontage of all the surrounding homes providing an extra measure of privacy.

The house reflects the state of the construction art at the time with a wonderfully timeless, very functional beach vacation home design. The interior is very unique with shiplap interior & exterior siding and many interesting, angular corners and spaces.

Our total interior remodel in 2012 maintained the home's original, unique character while incorporating the convenience & comforts of a modern home. The tasteful update is in a cozy, bright, contemporary Scandinavian style.

Since completing the remodel in early 2012 we have found this to be a magical place for relaxation and enjoyment. It is our hope that you will have the same experience while staying here.

Lisa purchased this house in 2011

Why Lisa chose Coupeville

We lived on Whidbey Island years ago & have been coming back several times a year ever since. So we knew what a wonderful place it is .

For several years we had been looking for a beach home to use as a get-away retreat for family and friends. After considering many areas we concluded that the Coupeville / Keystone area offered unsurpassed natural beauty along with a wide variety of recreational opportunites. Coupling that with the fact that it has some of the best weather west of the Cascades and is easily accessible by car clinched it for us.

Now that we have had this beach house for over a year; we have no doubt that we made a great choice! This is truly a wonderful place where one can just totally relax. At the same time, if in the mood, there is a wide variety of fun, interesting activites only minutes out the door.

We are confident you will enjoy it as much as our family does!

1-10-13 update: Please read our reviews you will see that we're not the only ones who think this is a Magic Place. Over 50 Five Star reviews in less than 2 years with nary a complaint! All our guests have been thrilled and so are we! We're confident you will be also.

What makes this house unique

There simply is not a nicer beach house in the Coupeville area!

Another unique benefits is the fact that Ranvik Beach House is located in the Olympic rainshadow. The result is third less rain and 30% more sunshine than most of western Washington, Oregon and lower British Columbia. It is appropriately refered to as the 'Sunny Side of Whidbey'.

Like to dine out? You are in luck as Whidbey Island has been designated a state tourist 'Culinary Destination'! The close and very quaint towns of Coupeville and Freeland offer many excellent dining options from basic fare to gourmet dining. There is great shopping and spas for extra relaxation. Several wineries are close to the beach house with a wineries tour map available at the house. The owners of Ranvik Beach House are very familiar with Whidbey Island and can assist you in gathering current information about tourist sites, outdoor activities, restaurants and special events on Whidbey Island.

If your idea of vacation & relaxation involves physical activities such as walking on the beach, fishing, biking (road or mountain style), day hiking, golf, kite flying, diving, kayaking, boating, or swimming you will find a place to do any of these within 10 minutes of the beach house. There is seasonal salmon and steelhead fishing from shore August - March. Ebey Historical Preserve, Fort Casey and other sites feature a wide variety of interesting places to explore. A near by public pool, basketball court, volleyball lawn an freshwater lake are within steps of the house and are available to guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Good Morning Dan…

Everything was SO perfect at the house! If I could give 10 stars (double the expected) I certainly would! We’ll be sure to share an amazing review as everything was perfect! We have stayed in many vacation homes and this was hands down our favorite and unequivocally the best appointed! You have thought out every detail and convenience so well! Loved the crisp clean white of everything…the linens, the towels….everything felt like a 5 star hotel experience! I am a Marriott girl as I travel a lot for business so I would put this right up against the JW Marriott experience!

Even the December weather was perfect! Loved the stormy seas in the early part of our stay and then these picture perfect days in the last! Our friends say it rains a lot in WA…we don’t believe them as every time we come it is lovely! :)

You asked if we had any suggestions to improve your home for guests. We were really at a loss to recommend anything further because it seems you had already thought of everything! Appliances, amenities, etc in the kitchen were perfect! I cooked prime rib for our Christmas dinner and had everything I needed–dishes, pots, pans, spice wise that we needed! That was awesome! Loved the coffee bar and left you some on my favorite Kurig Chai Lattes! If I was REALLY stretching for something I would say maybe add Bananagrams to the game closet (we love Bananagrams as a family)

Thank you so much; we hope to return again soon!

Ranvik: Reflective. Rejuvenating.

  • 5 of 5

Ranvik is a special place for us. This year we brought friends to participate in a reflective and contemplative retreat. It could not have been more perfect. Besides being in the midst of stunning nature -- including a rainbow over the Olympic Mountains! -- the home provides the perfect blend of meeting space, quiet sleeping quarters, media/presentation room, and efficient kitchen. Of course, the hosts are gracious and generous. I highly recommend this beachfront home for a getaway, family adventure, or small retreat.

Again and again!

  • 5 of 5

For the last three years we have stayed in the beautiful Ranvik House for a total of six visits at different times of the year. We are always delighted with what each season has to offer - rain, shine, storm and calm and always experience a special time at this well stocked, very clean and cozy and always comfortable home. We are especially grateful to the gracious hosts who are easy to work with and quick to reply to our inquiries. Thank you for always making our visits like "coming home".

WOW

  • 5 of 5

A-MAZ-ING! What a gorgeous well-kept home with a spectacular view! Anything you could ever hope for and more! All amenities you could need are there, and Dan was so helpful with ideas on what to do while visiting. Such a wonderful (and much needed) experience for our family. 2 teenage girls were kept very busy and were very sad to leave! I have no comlaints, only that I wish we could've stayed longer! Thank you for making our first trip to the island such a memorable one!!!

Expectations Exceeded

  • 5 of 5

3 couples spent 2 nights at this beautiful beach home. It was everything we could have wanted and more. The view was amazing, watching the ferries, the color over the mountains as the sun rose and set and just the tidal changes. We enjoyed roasting marshmallows in the fire pit, playing games by the fire, and just sitting looking out at the view. Had a wonderful dinner at Gordon's on Blueberry Hill one night. We have rented many homes over the years, and have never found one that had so many personal touches, things we would never have thought of but very much appreciated. Much has been said already by other reviewers, so I'll close with you can't go wrong renting this home from Dan and Lisa. We felt welcomed and hosted in their home as their guests. Will definitely be coming back.

Beautiful home - everything as advertised!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 (including 2 college-aged kids) spent 3 nights at this lovely beach house. Very spacious, well laid out and stocked with all the essentials for a comfortable, luxurious and relaxing vacation. We spent a lot of time in the great room by the fire enjoying the gorgeous view! There was also a nicely designed media room for those that wanted "screen time" - but we loved that there was not a tv in the great room. Caught the ferry to Port Townsend one day and spent a couple other days exploring Deception Pass, Coupeville and Langley. The owners were very organized and informative - everything was as promised. Would definitely recommend this vacation house!

The Perfect Beach House!

  • 5 of 5

We can not say enough about the wonderful Ravnik Beach House ! The design and furnishings are wonderful, comfortable and the house lacked nothing! Pictures do not do this house justice....The beach is awesome with perfect views from virtually everywhere! The Deck.the fire pit. The Outdoor furniture all add to your enjoyment! Inside the Bedrooms are all private and so comfortable...the kitchen had everything you can possibly need.....and the never ending views....from sunrise to sunset and the twinkling lights at night so calming. Lisa and Dan aren't renting a house they are sharing their wonderful beach home. Whidbey Island, especially Coupeville and Deception Pass were also wonderful to explore! We can't wait to return, again and again!
