Beautiful quiet home with spacious rooms

This house is a real jewel. It is located at the edge of the mission trail. A great walking loop is down the trail to the Mission, then Santa Lucia to Scenic Rd into town. The house was clean, modern and spacious. Parking is about 100 yes away on the street unless you park on a steep slope in front of the garage- but it was no problem. The patios are big and private, looking over the woods. The house was better than described, making my first rental through VRBO a success. i highly recommend it to anyone.

I was was a bit apprehensive at first since my husband just had leg surgery. The owner was extremely nice telling us all the potential challenges my husband may confront. The home was perfect with multiple entry points allowing my husband to stay on one floor of this gorgeous home. The house sits away from from the street and neighbors so it completely hidden and secluded as noted in the VRBO description. We had a taxi drop us off at the home so we had no choice but to walk everywhere. We spent one entire after noon walking down the Mission Creek trail to the Mission then over to Scenic Road drive then walked up the beach to Carmel's main beach then strolled up Ocean to town for an earlier dinner. We slept like babies for three nights. The house is very convenient for visit to anyone of the town's theaters. We could even hear the pleasant operatic sounds of the Forest Theater. My 78 year husband is not a good traveler and now he wants to retire in Carmel. I would say that this house had a lot to do with his great experience. We'll be coming back next year to look for homes. We give this home 2 extended thumbs up!

We stayed for 5 nights-the house was comfortable and it was very nice to have a separate bathroom for each couple that stayed at the house. We met the caretaker, and he was very nice and helped us with our luggage. Two bedrooms are upstairs and 1 downstairs- kitchen, dining table, lovely patio, and comfortable living room. Only 1 car can park in front of the garage, additional cars park on the side street and walk down to the house-it worked out on the fine. Grocery store about 2 miles away- and only a couple of blocks from downtown area of Carmel By the Sea.

We stayed for three nights. Space was as described and house was fairly clean...cobwebs in ceiling areas. Our main complaint was surrounding the kitchen. The coffee pot didn't work and there was limited serving dishes. No washcloths provided...we expected bath towels and washcloths especially when we ordered linen service. I was disappointed since our group loves to cook meals when we travel and we had a difficult time preparing our dinners. Parking was extremely difficult, even parking on Forest was a problem with neighbors complaining.
Owner's Response: Firstly, I would like to thank Kay for her review but its brevity does not provide a factually complete tale and may mislead others. Her review starts out on a high "flat" note recognizing the house is as described (wonderful place). But, then it's all downhill from there.
A few cobwebs in Ceiling area. No excuse here, the house is fairly big and has 12, 14, and 20' ceilings and is nestled in the middle of the forest. If cleaners do not finish an hour before arrival a single thread or two may be present 12 to 16' up. My caretaker who oversees prominent Inns in the area performs a walk through same day as arrival to ensure all is well.
Now, for the main complaint, the kitchen. The coffee pot does not work. Sorry, but it works just fine. It does have a few buttons and requires filters which I advertise on the website. But our kitchen offers 4-ways to make coffee & Tea [Coffee Maker, French Press, kettle, and speedy electric water heater] plus we provide a phone number to call the caretaker if there's a problem. As a result of this comment, I installed a filterless automatic coffee maker.
Limited Serving Dishes: I think she was expecting a kitchen for catering. We do not advertise our kitchen as a Chef's kitchen but is has all the utensils I can imagine, and plenty of dishes, platters, and cookware: 17 Oversized dinner plates (nice too), over 20 small dishes, 20 various sized bowls, 4 platters, 17 medium dishes, 20 glasses, 20 mugs, 15 wine glasses. Toaster, Toaster Oven, 4 gas burners, blender, chefs knife set and pots and pans and more! It's a very quaint kitchen!
No bath towels: I tried to interpret this one but I think Kay intended to say, not enough. We offer linens for 6 people and a washer & dryer. Per bathroom (3) 2 bath towels with 4 in the master, 2 hand towels, 2 wash cloths. Per bedroom (3), full set of sheets on bed plus 1-2 spare sets in drawers. In kitchen, we have 2 kitchen towels on counter and 12 more in top kitchen drawer. We do not provide beach towels.
Parking 3 cars is an issue no matter where you are in Carmel. The house is right near downtown. There is one very roomy parking spot in front of the garage and it is on a hill but we conservatively advertise parking is 200' down the St. and provide detailed directions. The great thing about our location is you don't need a car.
Kay was party to one of 3 couples and it's always a challenge to meet all my guests expectations but we'll continue to strive to.

Call me a cynic

First of all, I need to couch my words, I am very verbose and cynical.
The house was in a great location, relatively quiet, except for the opera singer practicing for the Bach Festival.
Don't try to park in the spot assigned unless you are an experienced Greyhound bus driver adept at parking on a steep slope.
We arrived much later than the 4 pm check in time expecting a clean bed, the bedding was, I can't put in writing!! Next day it was washed and great.
My granddaughter, 12 years old, not a clean freak swept up a dust pan full of sand from her room. So, if you stay here, let them know you expect clean.
I think we will stay at Bernardus again next time.
Owner's Response: Firstly, we appreciate Rachel's effort for taking the time to comment but it is far short of the effort we made to make her experience a good one. As Rachel indicated, she arrived very late to a place that is relatively hard to find in the daylight (the charm of the Carmel maze). Soon after her arrival, we received e-mails (9:45 PM) via VRBO, not calls to the numbers we had provided in 4 different places to ring the caretaker. Luckily, we spotted her e-mails within a half hour regarding a complaint about the "dirty beds" and that they were all covered with dog hair. Certainly, I was surprised (no pets allowed!) and immediately phoned the caretaker (10:00 PM) who immediately contacted the cleaning team. The caretaker then called Rachel (10:30 PM) who was sleeping and did not want to be bothered but the caretaker was able to make arrangements for the following day to address Rachel's concerns. The next day, our caretaker and one of the cleaners paid a visit and without question washed the sheets in question. Well, as it turns out, the so called "dog hairs" were really down feathers from our nice "duvet" comforters. The 12 year old granddaughter did not want her sheets cleaned and seemed to be very embarrassed after Rachel declared the down feathers, while in the caretakers hand, to be a dog hairs and that she knows better. As for the the dust on the floor this is a new one but I can imagine the dust was actually a few forest pill bugs that can on occasion make there way in since the home is surrounded by forest. Also, I should note that the sheets are always washed and there is one or two spare sets of "clean" sheets in each room but the parking is not as flat as Texas.

At any rate, this experience adds another quill to our VRBO cap. Also, we bought 10 new duvet covers to see if we could find one that seals the feather's fate!

We know all guests are different, but we'll strive to do our best.

- The owner

PS: The outdoor Forest theatre is a stones throw away so on occasion you might hear the sounds of Shakespeare mixed in with the songs of the forest.
