BEACH/LAKEFRONT

- Sunset Beach is a natural Great Lakes shoreline. It changes with the weather and is ungroomed. We do not have sand replenishment at Sunset Beach. We have many beach stones, driftwood, and sand. Sorry, we do not have palm trees or coconuts or inches of sand, but it is a great place to swim, walk the beach, enjoy a camp fire, and treasure hunt.

- Freeport Beach, the public beach next to us, does get sand replenishment and grooming. Little ones will enjoy the playground at Freeport Beach. Older kids and adults can enjoy the sand volleyball courts there. In the summer season, Freeport Beach offers a lifeguard.

- Guests with limited mobility can enjoy the lake views from the home and decks. But the beach requires good mobility for access - the surface is uneven with scattered driftwood, beach stones, etc. Access to the adjacent Freeport Beach requires crossing 16 Mile Creek which is normally ankle to calf deep at the mouth of the creek, but can be deeper with rain. Driving distance to Freeport Beach for those who want to bypass the creek is one mile because you have to access Route 5. Walking distance to Freeport Beach is much much closer. Please see the photo. One photo in particular is taken from Freeport Beach looking back at the homes on Sunset Beach.

ATTRACTIONS

- Lake Erie Wine Trail: We are located on the Lake Erie Wine Trail. 26 wineries make up the complete wine trail. Wineries are open YEAR ROUND and close only on major holidays. Along the wine trail we have many artisans, galleries, antique shops and restaurants. Winery Tours make for a great ladies getaway, classy bachelorette trip, or couples getaway.

Visit during a wine related event or festival, or choose a slower time such as winter or spring to get more personal attention and learning from the winemakers themselves. If you visit during a slower time, call ahead to book a special small group session with a winemaker for a look behind the scenes. A private winery tour would be a nice way to celebrate a special occasion. A special dinner or gathering at a winery is a nice idea for a rehearsal dinner, shower, engagement party.

- Our ladies groups also enjoy Bella Day Spa, Double DAB Horseriding Trails, and even the Presque Isle Casino.

- World Class Fishing: Lake Erie area is known for world class fishing including walleye, perch, bass, lake trout, and steelhead. We can recommend Charters or discuss parking for your boat. 16 Mile Creek is about 40 feet from this house. 20 Mile is about 3-4 miles from this house. Steelhead season typically runs from October through March, but creeks can and do freeze over for the latter part of the season.

- Sunsets: Watching the sun set each night into the lake is a beautiful thing and a local tradition.

- Nearby: We have a nice variety of restaurants nearby, including the Freeport Restaurant & Tavern. The Cork 1794 Restaurant is a new, nicer restaurant just 3 miles away. A local favorite place for coffee/lunch/hanging out is The Boston Bean Café – a cool space with WiFi. Presque Isle Winery has a fun food menu to go along with wine tasting. South Shore Wine Co has a cafe open mid-June to mid-October. For 18-holes of golf, we recommend Green Meadows Golf Course (5 miles).

- Daytrips? We are a short drive to Chautauqua Lake, Bemus Point, Findley Lake, Peek-n-Peak Golf & Ski Resort - and new Mountaineering and Zipline Courses, Erie, Presque Isle State Park as well as Presque Isle Downs & Casino, Splash Lagoon Water Park, Waldameer Amusement Park, Malls (Millcreek, Galleria, Grove City). For unique family adventures, we recommend the new mountaineering course and zip lines at Peek 'n Peak Resort in Clymer NY, the Horse Riding Trails at Double DAB in Ripley NY, and the Scallywags Pirate Ship in Erie.

WATER SPORTS

- Our location is excellent for water sports. If you are looking for a place to kayak, canoe or windsurf, bring your small craft and launch from the beach.

- Larger boats and jet skis can be launched from the North East Marina just 2 miles away and anchored during the day in front of the home.

- For beach sports, try sand volleyball at the adjacent Freeport Beach sand courts - just a short walk.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Whether relaxing with sunset viewing, sunbathing, winery tours, shoreline walks, or lake swimming, and sea glass finding, everyone in your group will be entertained at this lakefront location.

About Cathy Wonderling

Hello, I am Megan, a lifelong resident of North East, PA. I have grown up along the shores of Lake Erie and continue to reside in this area. My family has owned property on Sunset Beach for several generations over many decades. Thank you for taking the time to view my bio and my Sunset Beach House.

Words alone cannot accurately describe the hidden beauty of this unique property. My family and I have many fond memories at this home. My goal is to provide a quality coastal home for other families or friends to enjoy. I am a local owner/operator with a committed focus on customer service and satisfaction. I am just a phone call away should you need anything during the course of your stay.

A little bit about myself and my interests include: family, traveling, horses, hunting, fishing, swimming, kayaking, biking, gardening, growing pumpkins and Indian corn.

Why Cathy Wonderling chose Erie

This beach has special meaning, even though I have traveled a great deal to many tropical beaches. Lake Erie is a constant source of natural beauty as it ebbs and flows with the seasons, weather, fish and wildlife. The sunsets are a sight to behold as they bring a slice of heavenly serenity across the horizon line of the lake. I have many, many great family memories here and I trust you and your family will also have fond memories upon staying here also. This is a wonderful private neighborhood with easy beach access.

I purchased this property because of the location on the beach and the incredible views. The panoramic views are a result from being located on beach point at lake level. When I am here, I feel the peaceful tranquility of lake... through the beautiful sights of nature, sunsets, calming sounds of the waves, and cooling breezes. This is a wonderful spot for swimming, kayaking, beach combing, fishing and birdwatching. We have eagles and many other bird species to watch, along with deer that come to the lake to drink.

If you love true lake living you will indeed love this property. This property is like fine wine, it gets better with age. I have recently done extensive remodeling to both the interior and exterior to enhance all of the appointments of this luxury beach house. Location plus luxury make this a win-win beach house rental in all seasons.

What makes this house unique

Sunset viewing from our home is a daily activity.

The sunsets are world class and panoramic. We eat all summer meals outside at our picnic table on the beach, weather permitting. We enjoy our locally grown produce because they taste better when you buy them freshly picked at the farm stand less than a mile away! We have many fresh farm markets to choose from. We like to sleep outdoors on the deck or beach. Life at this beach includes beach treasure hunting (there's more to find when the beach is private), swimming, sunbathing, and not having to pack a bag to go to the beach.

Girls get away

7 women from Erie Co. PA gathered to celebrate our 30 year anniversary of monthly get togethers. We had an awesome time and the property could not have been better. We plan on making this a yearly outing rather than waiting another 30 years and plan to gather in the same place. Best staycation destination ever!

Steelhead Fishing at it's finest.

  • 5 of 5

Just spend the week with some Trout Unlimited friends fishing for Steelhead on the local streams. The stay at the Beach House was great and a nice place to spend our evening and nights after a long day stream lashing. We would spend the day fishing 20 mile creek mostly and return in the afternoon to fish 16 mile right out our back door. We had two guys catch a Coho Salmon this week. One that was 30 inches long and caught right out our backdoor on 16 mile creek. There were lots of Brown Trout at the mouth of 16 mile as well. 20 mile had some Browns but mostly Steelhead. The other Coho was caught on 20 mile. The weather took a turn for the worse in the last half of the week but you know what they say “It ain't Steelhead fishing till the weather is miserable”. The house was warm and comfy with great scenery and fishing right out the back door. The house made the best Fishing Camp ever. Can’t wait to get back up next year and do it all over again.

Owner's Response: Congrats to your fish camp crew for catching some of the finest fish in the area. Fred Boyer was the winner of the first annual "Sunset Beach House 2014 Biggest Catch & Best Fish Award" with his 30 inch Coho salmon and Brown trout. Fred demonstrated some true grit by reeling in his winning fish as the snow was falling. It was wonderful to see your VA Trout Unlimited chapter in action and producing quality catches at the strategic location of this beach house. We really appreciate how clean and tidy you left the house on your departure. We look forward to your next fishing expedition and adventures at Sunset Beach House!

We had a wonderful relaxing time staying here. Convenient location to the things we wanted to do. House could use some TLC and a good cleaning inside and out and spraying for spiders but that didn't really bother our enjoyment of being there. Enjoyed skipping and painting rocks and sitting by an evening fire. Watching the geese come in the evening and leave in the morning was an enjoyable event also.

Owner's Response: So glad to hear you enjoyed your stay Debi. I'm glad I was able to talk to you and hear your specific concerns about light bulbs being out and the spider webs. It is important to us to keep the house well-maintained for guests. We now have a new housekeeper who will be responsible for changing lightbulbs. With respect to the spider webs, this has been one of those rare years when a second treatment for spiders is necessary. Thanks for letting us know. Hope to hear from you again.

Erie Lakeside

  • 4 of 5

This is a lovely setting and a pretty and comfortable home to stay in. Found it very relaxing and close to North East an historic small town. The area is surrounded by vineyards and winerys too. While we loved being so close to the shore, the grounds are a little rugged. There was a lot of driftwood washed up and the rocks there are hard to walk on especially for small children. There is a public beach accessible by car. A stream flows in front of the house and is separated from Lake Erie beach by a small strip of sand. Fly fishermen were catching fish in the stream and also saw fishermen in the surf. Beach combing produced interesting rocks and some sea glass even. We loved sitting on the deck and listening to the surf, and a great place to watch the sunsets. Also, there is a very good restaurant just up the road which was good for dinner out.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed our lake house and beach. Many of our guests enjoy walking over to the public beach, volleyball courts and playgound for a beach adventure walk and collect treasures along the way. Our shoreline is ever changing with the weather so there are always new things to find along the lakeshore. The natural drift wood is handy for builidng bonfires and dwindles down as the season progresses. The fishing is a real sweet spot and bonus at this location! Enjoy your summer.

Cozy Retreat

  • 4 of 5

The Sunset Beach House was a great location for a relaxing girls' weekend.

The house was well maintained, clean, and appointed with the essentials. We had no issues, but felt comfortable that we could easily get in contact with someone if need be.

The location is convenient to both North East, PA and Westfield, NY for shops, restaurants, and wineries.

While the early-May weather did not allow for swimming and sunbathing, we were able to enjoy walks along the water and see amazing sunsets right from the patio. The lake access is fantastic and would be great for anyone looking to lounge by the water in the warmer weather.

Overall, the Sunset Beach House met and exceeded all expectations!

CUP Girlfriends weekend

Wow! What a find! Just right for six sassy sixty year olds! We loved the cottage, beach area (wish it would have been warmer!), and doing our "tasting tour" of the wineries! This was our 10th girlfriends weekend and we rank this as the #1 for fun, relaxation, dining and visiting with each other!

Megan - THANKS! We will return!

Owner's Response: Dear Clarion Alumni Ladies, What a pleasure it was to have you enjoy our beach house on the shores of Lake Erie! Thank you for taking the time to stay with us to experience and explore the many wonderful attributes of North East, the wineries and the beach. We certainly look forward to your next C.U.P. Lady alumni or family visit and are curious who will win the prize for the most inexpensive gift tradition that you ladies do annually! Many fond regards, Megan Cunningham

Best of both worlds... this home is located on Sunset Beach and just a short walk to the public Freeport Beach & Halli Reid Park which has playground, lifeguard and snack shack available seasonally. Come and see why this beach is called Sunset Beach. You will love our sunset views from both inside and outside the home. This home is uniquely situated at lake level. Lake level means cooling lake breezes.
