With parking, buses and taxis just outside the gates of St John's Cave - a four minute walk through beautiful countryside - Perdicary is like a farm in the middle of Chelsea! but with views of all of London! For a documentary on release this September, the BBC chose Perdicary for the best views on the island and the most characterful house. - and that means a lot amongst the most beautiful and expensive houses in Greece, not to mention one of the top watering holes in the Mediterranean for the rich and famous! ! Simplicity is the keynote - with neither medals nor badges:worn! You are who you really are!

Patmos is in the middle of the Dodecanese islands that float not far off-shore from Turkey - with Patmos almost directly across from Athens. An hour to an hour and a half away by hydrofoil are the largish islands of Kos and Samos both well supplied with inexpensive charter flights. A happy and restful route - our own favourite - is to fly to Athens and sleep over on a night ferry. Bring books, a CD a player and a smile: Patmos is a place to make new friends on an unspoiled yet sophisticated island of breathtaking beauty.

  • The master bedroom and master bathroom lead out to a pergola and - just below - a large garden terrace. The room has a DVD, CD and TV with dozens of stations world-wide, many in English. Ample cupboard space. The bedroom with two single beds is in what we call the Small House with its own dressing and shower room. Three windows and double doors all look out on the Valley of Revelations and the sea. The Small House is only metres from the main house but is still a quiet haven of its own. Ample cupboard space. The sea-facing apartment is only one terrace down yet noise is so baffled there could be party on one terrace that wouldn't be heard on another. The apartment has an extra-large room with two single beds and, above, a double bed on the mezzanine. There is a built in desk and shelving plus ample cupboard space. Just beyond this large room is a glassed-in terrace with a kitchenette and dining area. A large shower room is to one side.

Notes: The farm is four minutes from the Cave of St John with parking, buses and taxis just outside the gate. The walk itself is heavenly through the open fields of the Valley of Revelations and then a short stretch of woods. Four minutes up from the Cave is the ancient village of Chora going back a thousand years, its winding streets and houses perfectly preserved and arguably the most beautiful in Greece. Cresting this mountain-top village is the great fortress monastery of St John with its renowned treasure trove of Byzantine art. Four minutes down from the Cave is the port of Skala with its lively square and everything from a super-market, gym and French-trained patissier within a 100 metres. Restaurants and great beaches are everywhere. Note: the thick stone walls mean that the house is naturally cool . Just remember to pull the shutters half way during the heat of the day.
