Wonderful Break at Holwell Cottages

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Chinkwell Tor for 3 nights during April 2010. We had a wonderful break and could not fault anything about the experience. Holwell is in a great location with such a sense of peace but with so much in striking distance. The cottage is excellently equipped and a real home from home. From the minute we arrived we felt totally relaxed. It has a really cosy but luxurious feel and there is so much to see and do. We went to Cornwall on the Saturday, explored the Devon coastline near Dawlish on Sunday and explored the Moors on Monday. Evenings were spent cooking and relaxing at the cottage. The views are lovely and there is lots of wildlife on the farm - we loved seeing the donkeys roam free and the baby pigs. We went as 2 couples with our dad and our Staffie Duke. Everyone loved every minute and would recommend this break to anyone wanting to get some fresh air and get away from it all. The cottage was immaculate and exceeded all our expectations. We ordered groceries in advance which were delivered on our arrival along with a delicious cake from a neighbouring farm. We had the perfect weekend!!

Holwell Farm

  • 5 of 5
We have recently returned home from a really enjoyable week at Holwell. The party comprised of 2 adults, a baby (15 months) and 2 dogs and the property perfectly dealt with all our needs. Everything was as stated on the website we were also provided with a high chair, unfortunately another party had use of the travel cot.

Even though the owners were away the week we went we were very well looked after by Peter who works on the farm and was sitting in for the owners. Not only did he answer all our queries on walks around the farm with the dogs but provided tours of the farm & especially the pig pens with all the piglets.

We would certainly recommend this friends as a good place to explore Dartmoor and the surrounding area.

Such a Treat for man and dog!

  • 5 of 5
The cottage was truly 5 star luxury and had all mod cons in a wonderful setting. As confirmed hotel stayers for the last few years after some very disappointing stays in self catering this was a blissful escape in a clean well maintained property well deserving of its 5 stars.
Our dog had a great time and so did we...far away from the stress and strains of everyday life yet with all the amenities you could wish for close by in Widecombe and Ashburton. we will certainly be back and have already been telling all our friends and colleagues to visit as soon as they can.

Hay Tor

We have visited Holwell twice in the last 12 months and will certainly be returning later this year.
The cottages are very well appointed offering high levels of comfort and a home from home environment with outstanding customer service.
The walk to Widecombe on the moor is a gentle 30 minute downhill, I would suggest a hearty lunch in one of the lovely village pubs to raise energy levels for the slightly more arduous journey home.
The on-site butchery is a added bonus, offering high quality meats from local sources the majority of which are raised on Holwell.

In a world of its own.

We first visited Holwell in November 2008, and have since been back twice and currently planning another week, so that must say it all. The place is a real getaway and the perfect holiday for humans and their four legged friends. A 40 minute walk has you in the lovely village of Widecombe with its two pubs and cafe so there is no need to cook every day and every excuse to have that extra pudding to fuel the walk home up Bone Hill.

Holwell Farm is located in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park; one of England's last true wildernesses. Surrounded by towering granite 'tors' and pre-historic boundary walls, the farm is literally littered with signs of ancient life; stone circles, medieval settlements and ancient green lanes that even pre-date the cart ! Explore the wonderful scenery on foot or on horseback.

The nearest village is the famous Widecombe in the Moor where the well-known Fair is held every September; immortalized by Uncle Tom Cobbley and his old grey mare.

Dartmoor offers a superbly diverse landscape from the torrenting River Dart which carves its way from the high moor to Dartmouth, lush wooded valleys and open moorland where all the livestock; ponies, cattle and sheep roam free.

The sandy beaches of South Devon are within half an hour's drive and nearby attractions include The Steam Railway & Otter Farm, Pennywell Farm, Miniature Pony Centre, Plymouth Aquarium and Living Coasts, Torquay.

Other Activities: Hawking & Falconry, climbing, paragliding, wild pony handling.

Golf: There are over 30 Golf Courses within a 25 mile radius of Holwell Farm including;

Stover,

Hele Park,

Woodbury Park,

Daignton Park,

Dartmouth Golf & Country Club,

Exeter Golf & Country Club,

Bovey Castle.
