Thru the narrow streets you can find several monuments, & enjoy the moorish & Roman architecture, visit numerous churches & discover the castle.
In the market you can buy fresh fish, meat & vegetables. If you choose to eat out you will find several wonderful restaurants were you can taste local delights.
The night life is very diversified, especially on the summer months were there is a activities calendar with several choices to choose from.
The residents of the western Algarve are very hospitable, friendly & proud of the local beauty & purity of its environment.
Beaches & Countryside::
The near beaches like Tavira island, Terra Estreita, Barril & Cabanas, are located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park. They are formed by several miles of white sandy beaches with warm crystal clear waters, mostly calm.
On the beaches you can do a lot of sports, activities or have massages.
Tourism boats take you thru the numerous canals were you can find naturist beaches.
All the beaches have bars &/or restaurants.
To these beaches you can take the regular boat or aqua taxis. Aqua taxis work all year long & also during the night & will take you were you desire.
To Barril beach you can go by train all year long.
If you prefer to see the inner Algarve, you will find several wonderful places, like the fantastic natural waterfall Moinhos da Rocha & Pego do Inferno where you can swim on its clear fresh waters.
Going up thru the mountains you will find Cachopo. In this way of no were you can see beautiful views of the sea & fell wrapped up with the smell & silence of the hills.
Arround:
Near Tavira you must visit 2 very typical fisher villages, Cabanas & Santa Luzia.
A little further you can visit Cacela Velha & Spain, other country only 24 Km far away from Tavira. An opportunity to meet more than one different culture, people & language.
For the sport lovers there are golf courser, tennis courts, hiking & bicycle trails, big game fishing & sport infrastructures.
You can play tennis on the Quinta das Oliveiras in Pedras da Rainha, Cabanas & Pedras del Rei in Santa Luzia
Golf:
Golf players have a variety of choices, on the Tavira region there are 3 courses, the nearest is Benamor (18 holes). Then there are the Quinta da Ria & Quinta de Cima (2x18 holes). This fields are particularly beautiful, they have numerous lakes, & ancient Olive trees, from every hole the sea view is splendorous. Playing on these fields will refurnish your soul. Not far from Tavira you can also play on the Castro Marim course (18 holes), there are also courses near Vilamoura & Albufeira which can easily be reach going to the freeway Via do Infante.
The clubhouse has all the necessary comforts of restaurant, bar & shower facilities. This course is open to non-members & they don't seem to ask for handicap cards! Clubs & karts are available for hire. There is also a driving range. If you are alone player amongst your party & fancy a game call in to reception & the manager may be able to fix you up with a two or three ball either same day or next day.
