Beautiful and well kept hillside house
Submitted: October 27, 2010

The house is situated on the outskirts of a very small village, some 10 minutes walk away, but to get anywhere you would definitely need a car. Private parking space is very close to the house, but it should be noted that the access road is partly steep and not asphalted, and can be a challenge.
The house itself is big, very comfortable and well kept with a large living room with dining area and nice sofas (we were told by the lady welcoming us - not the owners - that the fireplace was not to be used, though), four big enough bedrooms and a well equipped kitchen. Two very clean and nice batchrooms. There is no TV-signal and no internet connection, but you can play DVD:s (we brought along for the kids).
The small garden and the two small terraces next to the house are very nice, but unfortunately it was too cold for al fresco dining when we stayed end of September, beginning October.
The best thing with the house is definitely the splendid valley views from the front garden and all bedrooms!
It should be noted that the location is very much off the beaten track. There is a 10-15 minutes drive to the main road in Diecimo connecting Lucca with the Garfagnana. There you also find a train station with frequent connections to Lucca (and some to Pisa). Another five minutes takes you to the supermarket in Borgo a Mozzano. We rarely spent less than 30-40 minutes on the roads to get to Lucca city center. We made Cinque Terre in 2h, Florence in 1h30 , Viareggio (beach) in 1h15 and Piza in 1 h.
The owners are very nice and quick to reply on e-mails answering all your questions. Their private house is situated right next to the property.
I would definitely recommend Casa Castagna to anyone wishing for a nice and comfortable place to stay off the beaten track and the big crowds, but with reasonable distances to major sights. We were travelling with kids (1 and 4), and although the house is great to share between two families, the location is not particularily child friendly as there will be a lot of driving to get anywhere.
And don't miss out Lucca! What a nice lite town!
