Photos and Description of the Wasilla vacation cabin rental
Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

This original homestead cabin overlooks Cornelius Lake, is along side a salmon creek, and sports views of Pioneer Peak and the surrounding Chugach Mountains. From this cabin, Alaska's beauty is abundant. The cabin is close to highways for easy access to the large variety of activities and sights available here in the Mat-Su Valley. Yet, it is also the perfect place to relax. You will want to enjoy a BBQ dinner eaten at the picnic table right outside the cabin front door. While you are relaxing you will want to watch the pair of loons and a pair of white swans enjoying their summer visit to the lake. Birds abound between these two lakes, so you can watch eagles hunting and riding the air currents as you enjoy a morning cup of coffee. The cabin is also creekside, so you can watch both red and silver salmon (runs take place in August and September) as they make their way to their spawning grounds.

Use this cabin as a home base. Fishing spots, hiking areas, glaciers, animal farms, bike trails, shops, spas, gyms, and historic townsites are all located here in the Mat-Su Valley.

This log cabin has two cozy bedrooms upstairs. The larger one features a custom built pine queen size bed while the smaller one has 2 single beds. The new bathroom is located on the main floor and features a large tiled shower. The beautiful kitchen area has granite counter tops, an electric stove, microwave oven, coffee maker, refrigerator, and a washer and dryer. Linens and kitchen utensils, pots, and pans are provided. The living room has a comfortable leather couch, custom blinds for privacy, and large windows for gazing at the spectacular views of ' nature at its best'.

The cabin is not suited to folks with a physical disability or those who are traveling with very young children. The stairs are steep.

Keywords: historic log cabin, lakefront and creek access, mountain views, centrally located, easy access to highways, 1 hour drive from Anchorage

About Kathryn

Bob and I have lived in Alaska for more than 30 years. We love living here in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and we love our lives. Bob is a General Contractor who builds custom homes locally. I am a teacher who loves working with elementary students at a local public school. Our two sons are hockey players. One son is currently out of state attending college. The other son lives is Anchorage and is currently working as a civil engineer there.

We are a very busy and active family. For more than 10 years, Bob and our younger son have both run the Mt. Marathon race in Seward on the fourth of July. We kayak and camp in Katchemak Bay every summer with friends. We like to ride bikes, hike, fish, and play golf. We have an older yellow Lab that is a 'frizbee nut' and goes everywhere with us.

Kathryn purchased this cabin in 2005
Why Kathryn chose Wasilla

The Mat-Su Valley really has the best of what Alaska has to offer, and we have lived here for twenty three years. We bought this amazing piece of property eight years ago. Bob built this great home on the bluff overlooking one lake at the back of the property. On the front of the property was an original homestead cabin. It took us 3 years to remodel the inside of the cabin and save most of the original logs. It is beautiful and we now would like to share it with others in the summer months.

What makes this cabin unique

If you enjoy watching birds like we do, you will especially enjoy your visit to this homestead cabin on Cornelius Lake . In addition to local water fowl and eagles, we get to enjoy viewing the many migratory birds who visit Alaska in the summer. Last summer Neklason was the temporary summer to home to a pair of white swans who raised six signets here. The parents lead the flotilla in parade style around the shore of the lake everyday when the signets were strong and big enough. The parents modeled for their youngsters 'touch-and-go' landings on water, traveling between our two lakes. We watched all 6 of the signets grow to young adults and then one day we watched all 8 of them fly south together in late September. It was soooo exciting!!

Wasilla Log Cabin

We reserved 10 days at this very clean, cozy log cabin north of Wasilla. The location suited us to do activities off the Parks and Glen Highways. The owners provided all necessary amenities. The mountain vistas off the deck were majestic. The only thing we, personally, did not care for was the traffic on paved road deck-side. Traffic and noise from it did not make for pleasant outdoor seating/eating for us. Also the stairs to upstairs bedroom were narrow and steep, which may be a concern to some travelers.

Fabulous Trip

We had an excellent time staying in Lakefront and Creekside cabin. The owner's hospitality was superb and the cabin was more than we had expected. It was small but recently remodeled and a new front deck made the cabin very comfortable for the four of us. The location of the cabin is private, easily accessible and Wasilla is central for various destinations. We were able to get out to Denali, Alyeska, Anchorage and the Matanuska Glacier for day trips. The kids did not want to leave and neither did we. If we have the opportunity to be back in Alaska we will definitely check the availability of the cabin for a return trip. Thank you.

The Best Cabin

5 of 5
Submitted: July 6, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
The Wasilla Cabin is one of the best places we have stayed in the area. Since the pictures and description were entered into VRBO, the owners have added a deck to the fron of the cabin. There is a brand new gas barbecue and potted flowers around the deck. Everything was clean and well-maintained. The owner had left us notes ahead of time plus we called from Anchorage about arriving earlier than the 4:00 p.m. for that day. In regards to WiFi , she was very helpful in giving us the information to sign in for online services. The cabin has a washer and dryer which was amazing and provided us an opportunity to do laundry in between outings. There are several attractions and activities within the area of Palmer, Wasilla, and Eagle River. Restaurants we would recommend include The Grape Tap, Garcias (Eagle River), Haute (Eagle River). We spent most of our time on this trip hiking and visiting family. Our grandson loves the Alaska Transportation Museum. But in recent trips we included Matanuska Glacier, The Reindeer Farm, The Musk Ox Farm, and Hatcher Pass. We thoroughly enjoyed the location of the cabin. We had access to the owner's kayaks, but we were so busy doing other activities; we didn't have time to use them. Hopefully, next time!!!

**Just a note: A person with a physical disability may have challenges with the stairs that go up to the bedrooms. Safety with young children may be an issue in regards to the stairs also.
