Anchorage thrives beneath a canopy of oak and magnolias. Here historic homes, country estates, and smaller homes sit side by side. In spring neighbors walk, bike, or jog past flowering dogwoods, forsythias, jonquils, and tulips. Citizens, young and old, involve themselves with theatre groups, city government, and community school projects. Anchorage - a community dedicated to family, neighbors, its school, the environment, its pets, and horses - is more than a place to drop anchor. Anchorage is a safe harbor: a twenty-year stay is common; fifty years is not uncommon.
The city has long been known as home of some of the area's wealthiest citizens, though the large old estates have mostly been divided up and many new, still upscale, houses have been built in the area, especially since 1977. Part of the city is designated as the Anchorage Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
Papa John's Pizza founder John Schnatter is a resident and owns about 6% of the land in Anchorage, including much of the city center. He restored an interurban rail station, three historic buildings and built a fourth in a similar style in the city's center, with a bank, an upscale restaurant, and a hiking trail, which opened as the Anchorage Trail in June 2008. In an interview, he told the Courier-Journal that his goal was purely to 'preserve the city's character'. This estate home is a lovely spot to simply relax, sip a mint julep and watch the sun set! If you enjoy sitting by an outdoor fire with friends....this is the spot for you!

My husband and I are semi retired with five grown children. We love to travel and spend most of our time between KY, Costa Rica and Long Island NY. We own a small seasonal seafood restaurant on the east end of Long Is. in the village of Sag Harbor. We also enjoy swimming, boating, cooking and entertaining. Our white lab enjoys most of the same...however Eating and not cooking!
Jon Shastid purchased this house in 1996
My wife and I celebrated my 40th birthday at Jon's home during the Kentucky Derby. We had 5 couples join us and could not have been more pleased. The home is easily large enough to accommodate that many people giving each space for private sleeping and bathing. Jon was so helpful in pointing us in the right direction for local restaurants and tips to make our Derby experience the best. It is a trip that none of us will soon forget. Our highlights for the home were definitely the large gourmet kitchen were a few of our guests made wonderful breakfasts and had a personal chef come in one night to serve dinner to all of us. That was very special and truly an experience. The dining room table was large enough to sit us all so that was great casual way to end our day after the bourbon trail. Another highlight of the home was the outdoor fireplace. Each evening most of our friends ended up outside to enjoy that. Since the home is secluded from the others casual fireside conversations were private and surely did not disturb the neighbors.
In summary we loved the house as it made our Derby experience. Thank you Jon for all of your help and for opening up your home to us.
Our large group had a great time and really enjoy the wonderful place Jon and his family have in Achorage woods. The house is very large and we had plenty of rooms to hang out or find a quite corner if necessary. I would stay there again in a hearbeat. Next time cyclocross worlds are in Louisville, this is where we will stay.
We had the pleasure of renting this lovely home in August for a week. Jon and Andrea were a pleasure to deal with, gracious and accommodating! Jon met us as we arrived to show us around the home, provide us with area information and make sure we had all that we needed to be comfortable. He remained readily available through our stay and beyond. When we had a minor A/C issue, he immediately tended to it; when we left items behind, he arranged for their return. The neighborhood is breathtaking and the home is lavishly appointed and spacious. The master suite is palatial, the bedrooms each have character and their own (or shared) bathroom--very convenient! There are several living areas to spread out in and a covered porch that is dreamy. The property is lushly treed. So peaceful. I could go on! Our large family was spoiled by our stay and we genuinely appreciate the Shastids and their home!
