2 Persons suite on a 70 hectare wine growing farm

In the hart of the busiest Italy this estate is a sort of enclosure. Private grounds all around, The 'Barchessa' has its own garden, outdoor tables and chairs, umbrella, garden shower and shares the house's small swimming pool.

Stefano & Margherita have two dogs (Mysty the Labrador and Nénè the Manchester terrier) and four cats (Cipolla, Celestino, Siviglia and Palletta di Pelo) living with them.

An idyllic setting in the Emilia Romagna countryside

  • 5 of 5
We found La Barchessa to be a wonderful place to get away and relax in the Emilia Romagna countryside. Our hosts, Margherita and Stefano, could not have been more accommodating. We have used VRBO for years, and we can honestly say that La Barchessa is right at the top our list of properties that not only met our expectations, but exceeded them. We have never seen such well prepared information sent to us in advance of our trip. Not only did it help us to prepare for the trip, but we constantly referred to the wealth of information it contained during our visit.

Margarita and Stefano were always gracious in answering our numerous questions and guiding us to wonderful places to dine and sights to see. Our cooking with Franca was a real highlight of our visit. Not just very informative, but a fun morning.

The property is beautiful, and a great location for exploring the Emilia Romagna. La Barchessa is well appointed, has a wonderfully warm feeling and is fully equipped to make it your home away from home. We highly recommend La Barchessa and know you won't find two more gracious hosts.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest,
thank you for your very kind apreciation of our modest tentative of offering our visitors a glimpse of the traditional Italian hospitality.
It is often forgotten, specially by us Italians, than the furthermost important tradition of ours, more than the excellent food and wine, magnificent historical
sites, paintings, sculptures and architectures, fashion or sport cars, that build up our Italian life-style , lies in our hospitality and welcoming.
Thank you for having apreciating them , it is the minimum we could do for you guests, and we will always go on trying to ameliorate it.
Your most kind and warm comment is the uttermost prize and reward for us both.
Hope we can serve you again in the future.

An Exquisite Find for Experiencing Emilio-Romagna

  • 5 of 5
We have spent a perfect week in La Barchessa, relaxing, eating, biking, touring, and enjoying every minute of the experience that Stefano and Margherita have constructed. The very pastoral accommodations were wonderful--perfectly quiet, a comfortable queen bed, spacious bathroom, shower with hot water, laundry facilities, lovely and very well furnished kitchen, beautiful patio and covered deck upstairs, and an additional patio behind. Too cold in April 2014 for the pool to be open, but that would add another amenity that we would have loved. Stefano has written out truly extensive information on local shops, restaurants, specialty food stores of which there are many in this Italian bread basket region, as well as directions and maps to each.

We toured Parma, local communities, Salsomaggiore Terme, toured a certified Parmasiano-Reggiono cheese-making factory, a prosciutto making factory, and balsamico aceto crafting which was amazing to learn. We had arranged to have a cooking experience at La Barchessa with Franca, a local woman and friend of Stefano and Margherita who does much of the cooking for major church events, so truly a skilled and respected local chef, who guided us through pasta-making, ragu, tortelli crafting, and classic asagna preparation which was both fun and tremendously useful, and which we will use forever, once we have improved our tortelli skills.
I cannot think of a way that this could have been improved. Oh, perhaps we could have wished for a warmer April, but not even Stefano and Margherita could have controlled that. Such a wonderful place and such nice people.

An Oasis

  • 5 of 5
What a lovely "home away" Stefano and Margherita have created on their farm. We stayed for a week during our visit to France and Italy. It was a perfect interlude from our immersion in the magnificent sites within these two countries. It offered a place to kick back, relax, still visit wonderful venues but at a much different pace. The guide provided was extremely informative. The "barn" is warm, well equipped and beautifully furnished. Our hosts were helpful and lovely. We hope to return if we are lucky enough to visit Italy again.

Delightful location

  • 5 of 5
The property and location delivered everything described in the property details, with the added benefit of our charming hosts Margherita and Stefano and of course their two lovely dogs! La Barchessa provided us with all the comforts of home, with excellent cooking facilities, delightful antique furniture and a really comfy bed (a must for a relaxing holiday!).

During our stay the weather was unseasonably hot, however we enjoyed the shade of the gazebo in the garden and had a daily "cool down" in the wonderful pool.

We enjoyed touring the historic region visiting many castles and towns. It was a joy to discover a new part of Italy and La Barchessa provided us with the perfect base to explore from. We also made time for some retail therapy and visited the outlet village at Fidenze, a 45 min drive up the A1.

We really enjoyed La Madaleina, a lovely restaurant in Quatro Castella - superb freshly cooked local food. However Stefano's barbecued lamb was difficult to beat!

The quality of the accommodation and this "undiscovered" part of Italy was a delight to experience - maybe we should have kept this to ourselves so that we can return!!

Our sincere thanks to Margherita and Stefano.

Owner's Response: Dear Graham and Eileen,
Thank you. We are delighted to know you really apreciated your holiday and holiday house in Emilia Romagna, such an interesting historical corner of Italy with so many art treasures yet to be discovered by the most demanding visitor.
We are ravished to know that our efforts in putting our little house with all it's comforts at disposal of this "elite" of visitors has sorted such gentle apreciations and success.
Our literary evening conversations will remain in our best memories and Stevenson's "Kidnapped" a tangible memory of them and of future common birthdays.
I am still wondering why G.L. In "italy Unpacked part I on BBC2" did not stop here and ask me the receipe. He passed by so close....
Hope to see you back soon. Stefano & Margherita

Excellent Accomodations & Hosts

Excellent Accomodations & Hosts
  • 5 of 5
My husband and I rented La Barchessa for a week and loved our time there. We purposely choose an area off the tourist track and this location was perfect. The apartment is furnished with family antiques and is clearly well cared for. Very clean, fully supplied with all you could possibly need and so, so cozy! It was the perfect space for us, especially having a patio out front which we enjoyed every afternoon for tea. Our hosts, Stefano and Margherita, were wonderful and we looked forward to our morning coffee with them both. The guide Stefano provides for you is amazing and fully details the surrounding area. Had we not had that guide, there were many interesting stops we would have missed. Once we booked the apartment, Stefano emailed us the guide and we knew we hit upon a gem and a wonderful area. La Barchessa is located on the family vineyard so your surroundings are beautiful and very peaceful. Anytime we had a question about a destination, Stefano was happy to assist us. Do not miss dinner at La Maddalena and be sure to ask for Mateo as your waiter. You'll have an excellent meal. We loved having Misty and Nannette (very sweet family dogs) visit us each morning along with with an assortment of cats. It all made us feel quite at home. All I can say is BOOK IT! Don't miss your chance to stay here. Thank you Stefano and Margherita for a wonderful week full of many happy memories. We definitely will be back. Ciao.

La Barchessa

  • 5 of 5
We absolutely loved our stay at La Barchessa! The renovated barn is beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Everything was impeccably clean and fresh. The kitchen was extremely well appointed and we enjoyed cooking meals from the fabulous local produce and products. It was wonderful to come "home" after a day of touring around to such a tranquil and relaxing place. Best of all are the owners, Stefano and Margherita--they were both so welcoming and friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the area and its rich history. The guide that Stefano has created is incredibly comprehensive and led us to explore many wonderful places we would otherwise never have known about. We are already homesick for La Barchessa, and we will definitely go back!

30 minutes from Parma, Fontanellato, Colorno. 20 minutes from Reggio Emilia, Correggio. 40 minutes to Modena and Sabbioneta. 60 minutes to Mantua and Bologna. Many things to sight-see in the padan plain. A forgotten by tourists Italy. Where mythology wants Apollo's son crashing into the Eridano river (now Pò) and the sisters turned into poplar trees. Here Dante and Petrarca came to meditate on the stone of Bismantova. Here renaissance moved its first steps at the courts of the Gonzaga and of the Este. Here are landscapes painted by Correggio, Mantegna, Parmigianino. From here great painting collections mooved to Hampton Court with Charles Ist, or to Dresda with Albert the strong leaving empy the palaces of Mantua and Modena. Here where the first Mediaeval known artist (Antelami) brought up his cathedrals in Parma, Modena and Fidenza. Here where you can have a real taste of Parmisan, culatello or prosciutto di Parma, drink fizzy Lambrusco and eat real tortellini. You should be here.
