Venezuelan currency is the Bolivar and the official rate is 2100 bolivares to the dollar. Street Bolivar rates are circa 3100 bs per dollar, but vary. Margarita is extremely good value at the official rates in any case. It is not advisable to engage in changing currency on the street with unknown parties.
Margarita is a safe island, certainly much more so than mainland Venezuela urban centres. However it is advisable to take sensible precautions such as not flaunting unnecessarily signs of wealth - jewellery, expensive watches, gold. But this is so in all Caribbean destinations. Carry a photocopy of your passport in your wallet, not the original and or your driving license.
Good medical facilities exist on the island in case of necessity- for example a fall, or a cut etc. The village of Paraguachi has an ambulatories which provides 24 hour emergency treatment for such things
Golf:
The island's population is made up from mainly Spanish, Italian, Portuguese origin. They know about food, so there are plenty of good restaurants in the island. Fish is a good bet. Loads of tropical fruits and very good vegetables also, which grow well on the island.
Very good Shopping at good economic prices. 20,000 bolivares ( $6 ) will buy a very good bottle of Chile wine, although you can get much cheaper. Main centres recommended are Sambil centre, Unicasa, Sigo centre, Makro, Rattan Plaza all in Porlamar to stock up but also Rattan in the village of Paraguachi itself - open till 9 pm each day.
