Great House on the North Shore
Our family took our first trip to Hawaii over the New Years. We wanted to spend a few night on the North Shore and a few nights in Honolulu. Jeff and Sheri's home on the North Shore was the perfect house for our family. We have three kids (twin 6 year old girls and a 2 year old). Obviously a 3 bedroom place would have been great, but also well out of our price range. This one bedroom house had a large enough great room where we could fit comfortably during the day and have the kids sleep on the provided futons during at night. At first we had wished the house had a "pack and play" or crib for the two year old, but she actually liked "camp" on the futons with her older sisters. Overall the house is very clean and you can tell it has been well maintained on the inside. Some other reviews mentioned the sound of cars on H-1. We did notice it but it didn't affect our sleep because the ocean waves drowned it out.
The house is right on the water. As we saw first hand, most of the water on the North Shore (especially in Dec/Jan) was rough, which is why the surfers love it so much. Well, this house is situated in just the right place because the waves break relatively far from the house so we could sit on the beach right in front of the house and the kids were able to play all day (We spent many hours there). There isn't direct access to the beach from the back patio, but it looks like the owners are getting ready to build stairs down to the beach. Without stairs, we could walk around the house directly to the North which would take us down to the beach, or I could jump down off the patio and carry the kids down...not a big deal either way, but stair would be nice.
Probably one of our favorite aspects to the house was the location. It is in the heart of a little surfing town on NE Oahu. Great local people, shops and restaurants. We ate in every breakfast (having bought food at the local grocery store) lunch was usually at home also, but we ate out every evening. We used Yelp to help guide us, but we really couldn't find a bad restaurant. We also went on a family friendly hike at the park just south (2-3 miles) that took us up a hill that overlooked a bay.
I could keep writing forever, but this should sum it up. We spent 5 nights in this house, My family and I loved it and we all agree if/when we go back to Hawaii we will try and stay in this house again. Good price, good location, good house, good owners. I can't think of a better way to recommend the house.
