Overview

Bernal Heights House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Ideal for long-term vacations or business travel, the cottage is a peaceful oasis with easy access to all that San Francisco offers. This 1-bedroom, long-term rental is not an apartment, flat, or in-law unit, but a fully detached, uniquely San Francisco home on its own lot. It features soft and hardwood floors, abundant natural light, and a well-equipped kitchen. Private front and rear decks provide a great place to relax and unwind. The bathroom features a washer/dryer, stained glass windows, and a clawfoot tub. The house is furnished, including queen-sized bed that comfortably sleeps two. There is no dedicated parking, but street parking is readily available.

The house is located in Bernal Heights, a friendly and sunny neighborhood that has its own vibrant community. You'll be a block and a half north of Cortland Avenue – the heart of Bernal Heights – putting you in easy walking distance of great restaurants, bakeries, shops and the grocery store. Also a pleasant walk to the weekend Alemany Farmer's Market and Flea Market. Hike to the top of Bernal Hill to see panoramic views of the City. Stroll into the vibrant Mission district for tasty burritos, along artsy Valencia Street or over to Noe Valley for the 24th Street shops.

Public transportation is within blocks to take you downtown, the theater district, the Castro - even to Berkeley and Oakland in the East Bay or south to the peninsula and San Jose. By car, you can quickly get around the Bay Area with freeways 101 and 280 in close proximity. We're a quick zip to SFO airport.

About Ryan and Michelle Schmidt

We're a family of four, including a charming little girl and an active little boy. Michelle is an SF native, and Ryan has been excited to call SF his home since 2006. Given our backgrounds in design and environmental science, you'll see our passions infused in the house in many of the details from the amenities to the solar thermal heating system. This cottage was our home for 4 years, and we absolutely loved it. We hope that it will be a great home away from home for you, too!

Ryan and Michelle Schmidt purchased this house in 2007

Why Ryan and Michelle Schmidt chose Bernal Heights

We love Bernal Heights. It has a great neighborhood feel while still being close to many busier areas of the city. We still live in the neighborhood and commute to work via public transportation. On weekends, we love being able to walk/take the bus almost anywhere. We also love how sunny Bernal is and the many great spots on Cortland Avenue. So easy to grab a great meal or find a last minute gift in the variety of shops. Plus, people are very friendly!

What makes this house unique

The cottage is very quiet and gets great natural light with windows and skylights throughout. It's an excellent home base for exploring the city and provides a welcome respite from all the hustle and bustle when you're ready to relax. The two decks provide a perfect spot to hang out on sunny days. With a full kitchen and a washer and dryer, you have everything you need in the house and within easy walking distance - shops, restaurants, the library and the grocery store. Great for extended stays.

Perfect location & relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I had a wonderful time staying here for a week. It was like a home away from home. The cottage was the perfect size and there was so much natural light coming in thru the skylights that made the house feel so cheery & cozy. It was very nicely decorated, clean and the bed was very comfortable. The added bonus was having the outside space and a washer & dryer. There is a deck in the front & in the back. We had coffee every morning out on the front deck. It was a great way to start your morning before heading down the street to Moonlight café for breakfast or some days we just cooked at the cottage. The cottage had everything you needed. The neighborhood was quiet and had a lot of great restaurants all in walking distance. Everyone was very friendly. Would definitely stay there again and Ryan & Michelle were wonderful.

Cute Little Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We were in San Francisco visiting family and stayed at the cottage for 8 days/7nights. It is a cute place. Had everything we needed. Initially the tv wasn't working, it was no big issue since we had ipads to entertain the kids - the owners were very responsive and fixed the tv. Any questions I had about the city or cottage they responded asap. It is a nice place to stay very close to downtown attractions. Within walking distance there are food shops, library and a playground behind the library. We had meals on the front porch/deck which was very enjoyable. I would recommend this place to anyone that wants to be close to the city but still want that "community" feel.

Delightful cottage in a lovely, friendly 'hood

  • 5 of 5

Our fifth SF rental in as many years, we enjoyed our thirteen night stay here more than any other. After two years in nearby Noe Valley, we chose to stay in Bernal Heights following a short visit last year. We could not have made a better decision.

Beautiful (the 360 degree views from the hill are arguably the best in the City), friendly and diverse, we were instantly made to feel at home. There are several excellent coffee houses, notably Martha’s, Progressive Grounds and Moonlight Café, and we had fine meals at Piqueo’s (Peruvian), Vega (Italian) and the Liberty Café (American).

The neighbourhood may look some distance from downtown on a map, but it is very accessible. In addition to the 24 bus which runs along Cortland Avenue, it is only a short walk to the nearest J Church Muni Metro stop, and several other bus lines run along the adjacent Mission Street. The 101 and 280 freeways are only a couple of minutes drive away.

The property itself is delightful. Firstly, we welcomed the rare opportunity in the City of having on-street parking virtually outside at all times.

We met the owners, Ryan and Michelle, and their lovely children, shortly after our arrival, when they explained the workings of the household appliances. We were also greeted with a bottle of wine, chocolates and fruit.

We inherited many household essentials, for example washing materials, toilet and kitchen rolls, that would have lasted us a year! Cooking facilities were good, and after a week’s skiing in Tahoe, the availability of a washer and drier was a godsend. No excuse for taking home two suitcases full of dirty washing! The bedroom was quiet and cosy and there was plenty of storage space.

The lounge area with large cable TV was a very comfortable space to wind down in and rest those weary feet from negotiating the streets of San Francisco. There was an ample supply of maps and leaflets on the Bay Area.

We would thoroughly recommend both the area and the cottage. Indeed, we have already provisionally booked to return next year.

And we can pay it no higher compliment than to state that it is exactly the size and type of property that we would gladly live in permanently, if ever we were granted the good fortune to do so.

Best in Bernal Heights!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and daughter and I stayed here in early Oct. This is such a cute place, completely renovated and filled with sunlight. We have relatives who live in Bernal Heights and this is the fourth rental we've stayed at in as many years. This is by far the best! The big advantage is you are not above or below someone or in an apt. attached to a garage; this is a stand alone small home and that makes it unique and private.

Lovely

  • 5 of 5

What a great place to stay. My wife, son and I enjoyed the cottage so much. The location is excellent and the house is on a quiet, dead-end street with ample street parking. The back deck is fantastic for enjoying a cup of coffee, reading, or just staring up at the enormous pine tree....Down the hill on Cortland street is great shopping for food, cafes and bookstores.

A lovely touch for an experienced VRBO-ers such as us was the kitchen being stocked with coffee, tea and fresh fruit. Not a small thing for weary travelers arriving at their destination!
