Relax in the comfort of a full-size 2 bedroom, 2 bath luxury 2nd floor apartment with separate entrance for your convenience and privacy. Enjoy the quiet country life with panoramic views of Big Creek Valley from the bay window in your living room, or sip a favorite beverage on the spacious balcony adjoining the King room. Feel free to enjoy our large lawn, take a walk through our woods or enjoy an evening fire in the fire pit. (Large deck attached to main house is available to guests on request.)
Our home is situated on the side of a small hill overlooking an active dairy farming area with farmers fields and pastures giving way to rolling wooded hills in the distance. Enjoy a bicycle or motorcycle ride or quiet drive along (paved) country roads, or relax in the yard or on your balcony with a good book and a glass of wine.
Wintertime sports activities are nearby with cross country and downhill skiing, tubing and snowboarding at Fort McCoy, cross country at the golf course in Sparta, and downhill at Mount La Crosse. Snowmobile trails abound! You and the kids can enjoy sledding on the mild slope of the hill right behind your apartment, build snowmen in the yard, etc. Try your hand at ice-fishing on Perch Lake or Lake Neshonoc or skating at the Sparta Hockey Rink or one of the outdoor rinks at Memorial Park in Sparta... or just snuggle in and stay warm by the electric fireplace in the apartment.
The apartment is attached to our home but has a separate entrance for your convenience. Sound buffers between our living spaces mean we can't hear you and you can't hear us.
A few years ago a storm blew over an enormous elm tree I climbed as a kid. It landed on the corner of an early 1900's granary. The owner chose not to repair it and allowed us to take it down for the salvaged lumber. You'll find that reclaimed lumber throughout the apartment. Wooden floors were reworked from the granary flooring. Wainscot, trim and wood ceilings were made from the siding. Shelves and benches that adorn the apartment were made from refashioned roofing boards. Table, work station and vanity tops were made from wall studs and beams. Nail holes, knots and blemishes remain visible in the wood giving the finished pieces a unique and beautiful character.
Keywords: Luxury Suite, large yard, woods, reclaimed wood floors, close to Elroy-Sparta and La Crosse River bike trails. Day trips to Bluffs, Amish Country.
Lu and I know that where we stay when we travel can dramatically affect how much we enjoy our entire vacation. We've learned that having a comfortable, relaxing (and sometimes romantic) place to call our 'home on the road' is as important as choosing what we'll do with our time. We've designed this space with YOUR comfort and relaxation in mind.
Lu and I enjoy 'getting back to basics'. Lu plants a garden and does home canning and freezing. We make our own maple syrup, occasionally raise a few farm animals, etc. We're 'growing green' in other ways too, with geothermal to provide heat and air conditioning and some of our hot water as a by-product. We've made our home and your apartment as energy efficient as we can, and Larry LOVES working with reclaimed wood for a variety of projects.
More recently, we've started a business called 'Used Anew'. We deconstruct unwanted buildings in the area (barns, houses, garages, etc.) and make the reclaimed lumber and other materials available for repurposing.
Larry Hutson purchased this apartment in 2007
We love the country! It's so peaceful and quiet here in the Big Creek Valley. The views of active farms and majestic wooded hills are spectacular any time of year. We've come home to Wisconsin after more than a decade away. Here on the hillside, overlooking the farm where I grew up, it feels a little like we're on vacation every day! We decided to share this experience with you, and so we've made this luxurious full-size apartment for you to use, for a night, for a week, or longer if you wish.
When was the last time you had absolutely nothing you were obligated to do? Sometimes the best vacation consists of finding a comfortable, inspiring place to stay and throwing out the schedule of activities. If you feel like going out, there's plenty to do - but if 'doing' is less important than re-energizing, staying in just might be the best option! Either way, we've created a space for you that can function as 'home-base' for a busy schedule, or comfortable and relaxing enough you may not want to leave.
During the growing and harvesting seasons we enjoy watching the farming activities all around us as our neighbors work the fields and harvest their crops. We frequently spot American Bald Eagles and other wildlife from our perch on the hill.
On cloudless nights, you'll enjoy the lack of light pollution. The only lights you'll see for miles will be a few neighbors' yard lights and an occasional passing vehicle on the road below. You may not have realized just how many stars are visible in the night sky!
My husband and I were looking for a weekend getaway in western Wisconsin for our "babymoon" before our first child was born. We ended up staying at Larry and Lu's and we couldn't have had a more wonderful time. The apartment is absolutely gorgeous, everything was very well-stocked, and the view out the big bay window was such a treat. Larry and Lu were very generous and attentive hosts. They invited us to come back once the baby is born and we very well might take them up on that! We loved that they were fine with us bringing our doggie, too. So many places have such strict rules about allowing children or pets and it was refreshing to deal with rentals owners who were so nice about it. The location is also ideal, as Sparta is only about an hour (at the most) within any of the best destinations in western WI.
Very clean and well maintained. The owners were great hosts by helping us when we needed some directions and then just letting us enjoy the time undisturbed while we were there. We hope to be able to come back next year.
This is a great stay. I must admit we were skeptical about an apartment setting but found our stay great. It is very clean, quiet, and has everything you need. The views of the valley are some of the best. The owners are very friendly and nice to visit with.
We stayed here when we were in town for an extended weekend because of a wedding. There were 3 adults and 1 toddler and it was absolutely perfect for our needs. The location is set a little ways outside of town, but we were definitely fine with the short drive because it was peaceful and beautiful! The kitchen area was well stocked and we enjoyed being able to "rent" a movie one rainy night. No noise heard from individuals below at all, it was definitely like having the place to ourselves. One thing to know: to get to the apartment, you do have to climb a flight of stairs. For us this was no problem at all, but for some this may be an issue so I thought I would mention it. Owners were wonderful, available when needed! Had a great time and would definitely stay again!
This is our 3rd year in a row staying in this property, and we always have a great time. The apartment is immaculately clean and well stocked (and when we needed an extra large pot for cooking that wasn't in the apartment, the owners were right there to help us out!). This is a peaceful setting and works perfectly for us, 2 adults and 4 children (most of the kids bunked on the floor).
Wonderful views, very nice property.
