|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Drenched in sunlight and fifteen minutes from the beach, Mango Cottage is a Bali inspired retreat nestled on the slope of the now dormant volcano, Hualalai. The house has a large private yard filled with tropical plants, fragrant flowers, outdoor sitting areas and private hot tub. It is situated on a quiet single lane in a peaceful old neighborhood, complete with meandering turkeys and the wild parrots that occasionally visit the adjacent mango tree.
From the door of Mango Cottage to the crystal waters of Kua Bay is a 15-minute drive and another few minutes delivers you to the renowned beaches of the Kohala Coast. It’s just a quick 10-minute drive to Kailua-Kona where you will find supermarkets, a natural foods store, restaurants and other trappings of “Town.” There is much to explore from this central location and we are happy to share our life-long local knowledge.
Mango Cottage has been restored with new flooring, many windows, an efficient kitchen, and a lanai for relaxing outdoor living. Float in the hot tub and enjoy the Hawaiian starry night. The lush gardens surround the home and the feeling of separateness between outdoors and in is minimal. Mango Cottage is gated and private, offers WiFi, a dishwasher, and two flat screen TV's. A washer and dryer are available and in-house maid service is available upon request during your stay. The bedding and queen size mattress, including the additional single day bed in the living room, are high quality for a comfortable sleep amidst the tropical breezes and sounds of the distant water feature. Views from the house include the ocean and a park like setting, perfect to witness the green flash moment.
The concept of the space is to provide a totally serene indoor/outdoor experience with all the luxury of good, comfortable design mixed with Indonesian antiques and art. It is perfect for your Hawaiian vacation and to re-charge all of your senses… enjoy!

We have lived in Kona for thirty-five years and have called Hawaii our home! Our property has been a labor of love and we are delighted to offer the cottage as a vacation rental. My husband and I are now retired and spend much of our time in the garden, creating jewelry, or traveling to California to visit our grandchildren.
Christine purchased this house in 1986
The cottage, which is privately situated on it's own 1/4 acre of tropical gardens, large lawn area, beautiful sunsets, water feature and hot tub to relax and watch the stars.
I take enormous joy in landscaping and gardening. I've planted many fragrant plants and trees along with fruit trees. The interior decorations and many of the garden statues are inspired by Indonesia. The property is very private, not your usual tourist flare!
We are 8 minutes from the Kailua-Kona airport and 10 minutes to Kona town. If you drive 15 minutes in the other direction, you are at renowned beaches of the Kohala Coast 'Kua Bay'. We are close to everything and yet feel worlds away from it all.
We enjoyed calling Mango Cottage “home” during the second half of our recent visit to the Big Island.
Past reviews don’t lie: Mango Cottage – and its owners – are a real gem. Christine was a joy to work with from the start. She warmly greeted us upon arrival. With peaceful Hawaiian music playing on the radio, plumeria blossoms throughout the house, wine chilling in the refrigerator and fresh oranges and papaya in the kitchen – we felt greatly welcomed.
Surrounded by beautiful landscaping and gate at the front of the driveway, Mango Cottage is private. We found the neighborhood quiet and the hillside location gave expansive view of the coastline below. The house was clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and we had no trouble preparing meals. We were thankful to have use of a BBQ and washer/dryer. Had we of forgotten snorkeling gear there was plenty available. The hot tub was enjoyed after days of exploration.
I appreciated Christine’s attention to detail both in and outside of the home. Outside, I smiled more than once happening upon hidden treasures tucked here and there among the landscape. Christine’s green thumb shows in all areas of the yard and floral smells waft into the home day and night.
The location of Mango Cottage was ideal for exploring many west-side island locations. Kailua-Kona is only a short drive away. We ventured north to the Pololu Valley Lookout after visiting the charming towns of Waimea and Hawi. We explored several beaches and enjoyed sunset from A Bay on more than one evening. With family also on-island, we traveled south for the Thanksgiving holiday – first to South Point (windy and beautiful) and then on to Sea Mountain where family had rented a condo. Punalu’u Beach was a good place to sink your feet into black sand while watching sea turtles rest on shore. Though there were several options for snorkeling, we enjoyed return visits to Kahalu’u and Ho’okena Beach Parks. We opted for the short – but steep – hike down to Kealakekua Bay and Captain Cook Monument where we snorkeled for hours and saw both spinner and bottlenose dolphins from afar. As all the guidebooks advise, Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park is not to be missed.
The Big Island is a special place. There is a great deal to explore and the beauty is vast and varied. Our time at Mango Cottage allowed us to settle in and make the most of our visit on the island, while giving us opportunity to create cherished memories.
The two of us greatly enjoyed the serenity of Mango Cottage. The cottage was comfortable, clean and very romantic. It is a small cottage, but with very nice at home features and decorations. Incense and candles provided. The lanai/porch overlooking the yard/garden was the real high point. Even when it rained for a few hours it was delightful to sit and enjoy the view over the plain below and the ocean (the view is carefully manicured by the trees below the porch). I personally spent most of my time there.
The garden is extremely well kept and beautiful, with a timed water feature and lights in the evening. It is carefully planted and maintained, and there are a number of places to sit and enjoy the ambience, including the hot tub front and center in the yard. There were beautiful flowering plants strategically placed around the yard. It is very tropical and carefully landscaped. The whole yard is extremely private, including the hot tub and the grill.
We even had an avocado from the yard. And the birds in the morning were fantastic. The chorus of sounds was extremely restful and interesting. We heard and saw wild turkeys and parrots.
We also made use of the equipment, beach chairs, towels etc to enjoy the local beaches. Be sure to research the area, since there is a beach between the cottage and the airport , just minutes away, where you can see green turtles.
The owners were extremely helpful and prompt (we got lost on the way in from the airport and we ran out of gas on the grill). The gas was replaced within minutes from the owners that live above the property but who do not intervene at all and left us to ourselves unless we needed help.
I would recommend figuring out what time of day you are going to arrive and determining distances to the turns provided in the directions (prior to arrival), and to local supermarkets etc to get supplies. It is pretty close to town and there is a Safeway not too far away from the cottage, if you know how to get to it.
This is a fabulous home for a couple to stay at while visiting Kona. We didn't want to leave when our time was up. Other reviewers have listed the many attributes of this wonderful place. A few I have to mention again are the wonderful covered second story deck. The views of the totally private gardens and coastline four miles away were fabulous, the sun setting in the ocean incredible.
The yard is filled with birds. We saw Nutmeg Manikins, Japanese White-eyes, Kalij Pheasants, Hawaiian Silverbills, Mynas, Spotted and Zebra Doves, Northern and Yellow-Billed Cardinals every day. Each morning noisy flocks of Red-masked Parakeets flew in to dine on the mangoes in the neighboring trees. We even spotted a Rough-legged Hawk soaring on the thermals. We had breakfast and dinner on the deck almost every morning to a symphony of birdsong and fragrance from the enormous Brugmansia and Orange trees nearby. The quiet sound of the fountain splashing was perfect. Being able to watch the stars from the hot tube every night without any chlorine in the water was great. The yard is totally private and dark at night. It is completely fenced/screened from all the neighbors and you receive a remote control for the electric gate on the driveway. The private lane to the home dead ends a few houses past Mango Cottage. The speed limit on the road is 10-15 mph at most and there is rarely more than a car or two a day that goes past. It was amazing to visit a tourist destination and find complete privacy. There are a dozen solar powered lights scattered around to provide interest and a little night light. It's so private you could stroll naked to the hot tube, were you so inclined...
We were there just as the seasonal fruit in the yard was ripening. We had freshly picked oranges, avocados and mangoes every morning for breakfast. There is a great farmer's market in town, open every day, that supplied us with bananas, longan and dragon fruit plus fabulous Maui Gold pineapples.
There is a Costco at the bottom of the hill that has the best gas prices on the Island and lots of things that the mainland Costco stores don't carry. We purchased a couple of pineapples from both Costco and a local grocery store because we believed the website that said the Farmer's market is closed on Sunday and Monday (it isn't). Those pineapples were a disappointment. Buy your fruit from the Farmer's market. It will be the best you've ever tasted.
We can't wait to return!
We had the loveliest time here. Christine was the perfect owner - helpful, yet unobtrusive - and her cottage is spectacular. Her decorating, landscaping and housekeeping standards and aesthetic are just great. From the DVDs she keeps around to the books to the welcome gifts in the refrigerator, we could not ask for anything more.
This house is a 15 minute drive from some of the greatest beaches in the world, 10 minutes from town, and 2000 light years from stress.
I wish I were there now!
Stayed here and couldn't be happier with the experience! The house and grounds are private, meticulously kept and beautiful. The owners are very nice and live adjacent to the property. They responded immediately to a glitch with the hot tub, but were otherwise unobtrusive.
The house is about 1000 feet above the airport, 3/4 miles down a one lane paved road. It is in a residential neighborhood, completely free of the tourist hubbub, but only 10 minutes or so from Kona.
Because of its location up the hill, the weather is not as hot as at the beach, so you experience the natural Hawaii'n lifestyle. Windows open 24/7 with the onshore breezes acting as your air conditioner. Fabulous!
We would definitely go back if we return to the Big Island.
What can I say other than perfection with convenience. The best weather, scenery, beds, gardens and hosts. We have enjoyed our 2 weeks here as this is truly paradise. Just bring yourself as everything is already here. The sunsets are magical and the visiting kitty friendly. You will be awoken by birds, including parrots and turkeys. Stores are close and a fully equipped kitchen will save you tons of money. Tis property will be hot and you will need to book well ahead. Bring something warm in the mornings as it gets cool. Enjoy.
