This part of Extremadura is incredibly rich in Historical Sites, Spectacular Walking Routes and Nature and Wildlife. The area has the most well conserved collection of Dolmens in Western Europe. One time part of the Roman Province of Lusitania, Extremadura has fine Roman Architecture including the Teatro in Merida, and the bridge at Alcantara. The local town of Valencia de Alcantara is 10km from Casa Blanca. Dating back to pre-Roman times the town has a 13th century castle, elegant 15th and 16th century churches, the Jewish Gothic quarter and the Roman aqueduct and bridge (commissioned by Marcus Agrippa 25BC. ) There are also plenty of bars and restaurants. Just across the border into Portugal Marvao received it’s first charter in 1226 and its ancient Castle provides an unparalleled view of the surrounding countryside below. The countryside is part of a designated area for the conservation and protection of birds (Z.E.P.A). Several species of birds are only found in Extremadura
